Right, Just bought one on the bay for £547 incl P&P.
Its version B and comes with Version 4 maps pre-installed.
A few questions:
1. Back in the day i retro fitted my existing MFD2. Is it just a case of a straight swap or do i need to do anything else?
2. How is music handled? Can i create play lists or id it a case of browsing within a folder structure?
3. Shall i remove the VW ipod connection totally and let the unit handle everything now?
4. Worth getting a SD card reader to update music frequently?
5. Does it have Post Code search?
6. Hints / Tips?
-
1. you technically need to get the converter leads for the FM / AM aerials, as I did, but someone on here said they did it without, it was a recent post, should be easy to find.
2. no playlists, just folders of music.
3. I left my ipod connection alone, but never use it.
4. I use the SD card quite a bit, its very handy, readers/cards are obviously very cheap these days.
5. it does do Post Code search, but only the first few digits, i.e. SW1 9__, doesn't do last 2 digits.
6. hints.....make sure you chance the ground wire, if you want use the ipod connection again, the ground wire needs to be pulled out of the plastic chocolate box terminal and relocated. its all detailed on vwnavi.com
:nerd:
-
1. you technically need to get the converter leads for the FM / AM aerials, as I did,
AHHHH!!!!
How much did you pay for the converters?
Damn, i was hoping it was a straight swap
-
1. I also did it without buying the converters - basically, it involves hacking off one of the plastic connectors and keeper the wire/plug inside - which then fits straight into the back of the unit. Not as secure as a proper converter/plug, I'm sure, and it did feel kinda wrong doing it, but it works perfectly well, and has done so for months.
2. No playlists available, but I have organised my folders into artist, then album. I also have a 'launch' track in the root. I use the launch track to randomly play tracks from anywhere in my collection - the trick being is that it will only see tracks in sub-folders from the track you start playing, so the one in the root does the whole HD. If you want to randomize within an artist, just go to that folder and play a track from there.
3. There's instructions on changing one of the connector pins for the ipod attachment so that it works with the RNS - I don't use mine either, but I did the change while the dashboard was in apart just so things are 'right', and I suppose the fact it works will help re-sale one day...
4. I used 4Gb SD cards to transfer my music - be aware that it takes quite a while! It's also good to transport new MP3's that you have - as well as copying them to the HD, I play from the SD (same principle with randomizing!) so I can easily listen to my new music when I get it.
5. The Sat Nav (particularly with V4) is fab, and very easy to use with touchscreen - I know it does some degree of postcode searching, but I've never felt inclined to use it.
Make sure both aerial cables are connected properly - I bodged mine a bit first time (before I took the adapter apart), and thought that the radio signal was just a bit weak. It was only that I noticed that I wasn't getting TMS that I realised one of the cables wasn't properly plugged, and that I was missing out on some great functionality.
Great price, btw - I paid £900 for mine some time ago, but even now consider that good value for money.
-
I think I paid £25 from VW for the converter leads.

Do you know what part number it is at all?
-
Part numbers:
4E0 035 608 K
(this is a little twin plastic connector)
000 098 707 <-- 2 of these
(these are wires)

Thanks 2007GTI

Looking at one of these myself and only have the standard rcd300 is it? so is it just a case of swap one for the other, change connectors and fit a GPS ariel? Wheres the best place to install the ariel? rear screen at the top?
What was the ebay sellers ID? Has he anymore?

Yes he has 1 more left. ID is dimon8.
Hes posted mine today so should get it tomorrow.
It should be a straight swap apart from installing the connectors and gps aerial. My aerial is installed near my tax disc at the front. Its hiddne from the outside as the tax disc is covering it. On the inside all you see is the block. The wire is hidden away.
-
Think im gona get one pretty soon then, anyone else placed the ariel in a different place? I take it a good idea to place it against one of the rear / front screens.
-
mine is stuck inside the big centre air vent, i.e. below the mesh grille on the top of the dash.
this picture is looking down, with the mesh removed.

Thats a much better idea, cheers for the pic. Take it GPS works fine hiding away in there?
-
no probs in nearly 2 years.
-
I had problems with my gps antenna when I installed it underneath the vent, would only pick up 2 satellites so only managed a 2d fix.
Decided to run the cable down underneath the glove box and up the passenger A-pillar, up the side between the windscreen and the lining, across the top of the windscreen pushing it into the gap and sitting behind the mirror. Can't be seen from the outside and normally get 7 or 8 satellites. It's stuck there with velcro and has never moved.
-
how times and places did you try and pick up the satellites, as its often just down to the time of day as to how many satellites you can pick up, as I regularly get 7 or 8.

I have just fitted the RNS510 to my 2007 GTI.
I broke the plastic covers off the 2 aerial leads (on the car side) and they fit into the new unit perfectly.
If you really want to buy the right lead, it will be around £25 from VW. The way I did it, it cost nothing and will still work perfectly fine when I put the old RCD300 back in come trade in time.
With regards to the gps aerial - I bought one of ebay for around £12 delivered. It is magnetic, so I put it next to the big centre vent which is removed during installation. It works perfectly.
If you take your time, the whole install can be done in less than 45mins.
Its a fantastic bit of kit. I was quite canny - I bid on lots of them, but managed to get a 6mth old B version with instructions book and genuine VW maps DVD for £440 delivered. It took a while, but if you wait long enough you will find a bargain!

It regularly only got 2 or 3 satellites. Once I was driving on the M42 and the system couldn't get a lock on me and thought I was driving along the fields around Bristol. After changing the location, no problems.
-
Well I ordered the connectors for the MFD3. I get a discount as i am a "valued customer".............probably because i test drove the MK6 GTI and havent got back to them since
They are going to install it for me for £25 which includes a full valet, inside and out, so i cant complain
-
are they fitting the stereo for £25?? not bad is that lookers vw in boro?? im after one of these ill av a pop over there if they will fit it for that!

What the best way of gettin music on the HDD then? Via SD card or is there a USB slot?

What the best way of gettin music on the HDD then? Via SD card or is there a USB slot?
SD card or via DVD disc's
I've ordered an Sandisk 8GB ULTRA SD card from Amazon for £13 which will store my "fav" music that i will be listening to most often aswell as updated tracks (so i dont have to burn dvd's everytime).
The rest i will burn to dvd and copy over to HDD.

The maximum capacity for the SD card is 2GB. I remember trying a 8GB and it didn't recognise it. Can't remember whether it was an ordinary SD or it was an SDHC one though as SDHC can't be read :undecided:
-
I remember reading about this in the RNS510 manual. I think its that the SDHC arent compatible with the unit.
-
I think its that the SDHC arent compatible with the unit.
Ahhhh thats the one i've ordered
Im struggling to find a ordinaery SD card retailer. All seem to be SDHC
-
Is that so?
I'll sell you 2 1Gb SD cards for £500 each :)
-
I bought a 2gb car from tesco the other day for £4.97, if you can wait I'm sure i paid £2 for a sandisk ultra 2 off ebay a few months back
-
dont waste your money on san disk ultra 2, as it wont make any difference reading music on the RNS 510.
I just got an own branded tesco one which was very cheap, but from the above post seems like they are even cheaper now!
-
UPDATE:
Arrived this morning well packaged! Not a mark on it!!
Cant wait to get it installed tomorrow.
PS. The guy has 1 more left if anyone is interested.
-
Fitted and installed. Works great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Car interior looks way better!!!!!!!!!!!!

Install was easy. Didn't need to do any choping of cables or ends. Just unscrewed the square connectors on the cables and they went in fine. Added some tape to make them secure in case they did decide to move. Took 20minutes.
Transferring music is taking forever!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've noticed it takes longer to copy from DVD so im sticking with the SD card to transfer music to HDD. But even that is slow!
One thing i've noticed is that the fan on the back of the unit seems to stay on all the time. Is this normal?
-
I read somewhere that the fan stays on for about 20 mins after the unit is switched off.

That must be it then. Must be to cool HDD down then (i think).
Cheers

Something thats bugging me is this!
I've created a folder called "Trance" on the HDD. I put in the SD card loaded with trance tunes. I navigate to the SD slot and click options then "copy". It then asks me for a location. I select the "trance" folder on the HDD. It copies the tracks over BUT it doesnt just put the tracks in that folder. It creates a sub-folder in the "trance" folder and puts the tracks in there. Then i have to indivilally copy each track to the "trance" folder which is a pain!!!!
I dont want it to create sub-folders within the folders i want it to copy the music to!
Isnt there anyway for it to just copy the stuff over from the SD card to the folder of choice without it auto creating a sub-folder called "SD copied..." ?
EDIT: How do i check on the system what version of the map its got installed?
-

Create a folder called Trance on the SD card, put the tunes in that, select that folder name on the screen, then select copy, then insert here and it will copy the folder Trance and its contents into the root of the hdd. If you want to add more to that folder than will fit on the SD card, keep the same folder name, and fill it with more tracks and it will add to the one already on the HDD
-
EDIT: How do i check on the system what version of the map its got installed?
If its running the older firmware
Use the hidden test menu, to access you need to enter the car, put key in ignition till nav screen starts coming on Manufacturer logo, then press and hold setup button for 20 - 30 seconds, or until the full Hidden set up menu screen comes up
If that doesn't work then you will need to enable the hidden menu using VAGCOM

yes, select replace and it will add the new music to the folder. It won't actually replace anything unless the filename is the same.

Thanks. Will try that later.
Holding Setup down for 20/30sec does not do anything for me.....
On a side note. I have managed to get hold of the v4 maps. I burnt them using the UDF system (DVD-Rom) because that was what nero said as it refused to burn them as a normal ISO. But they dont work in the system.
How have you guys burnt them?

Is there anyway with this unit to playback DVD's while the car is moving? Ive heard you can disconnect the wire that senses the movement, but that screws up the satnav feature. Any firmware available to sort this, as my passengers would like to view dvd's if I get this unit.

Because of the canbus control you will need to get a TV free module to enable DVD on the move. There isn't a modified version of the firmware available

To burn a DVD try a DVD +RW disc
I used Nero with the following settings:
ISO
No multisession
File system: ISO 9660 only
Filename length: Max. of 31 chars (level 2)
Allow path depth of more than 8 characters
Allow more than 255 characters in path
Do not add ISO ";1" file version extension
Date: Use the date and time from original file
Burn: Write, finalise disc, burn speed = 2x.

I used Poweriso to burn my maps onto a DVD. I just opened up the iso file in it and let the program do the rest. Just read that V5 is available. Wonder what changes are in that version? :undecided:
Poweriso also lets you modify the map files so you can put the cameras locations on.
-
Mine didn't come as an ISO.
It was just a rar file from which I extracted two files:
CD_6672.mdf (3.35gb)
CD_6672.mds (4.22kb)
EDIT: Converted .mdf file to .iso file using UltraISO. Going to burn it and see if it works.
-
Works! Or atleast I think it does.
I insert the DVD and it throws up no errors. But it does nothing and i dont know how to select it.
When I eject it, it says "Ejecting Navigation Disc..." so it recognises for what it is.
Whats the crack then?
Is it not doing anything because its the same version of maps that is on the HDD (v4)?
-
That sounds about right, it will only burst into life when you put the disc in if it's a newer version than the one on the HD.
-
Just read that V5 is available.
I'll start looking for that then
-

And where would one find the camera locations files/info to add it to the v4.0 maps?

Sorry to take this off topic - but I notice you have a 'liquid' air freshener there Maxamus?
Did you read the tales of woe posted on other Forums about the damage caused to the dash trim and radio after a 'leakage/spillage' ?

Potential mega cost to put right
HTH
-
To add extra POIs you need to download POI Inspector 3.5
If you add speed cameras as POIs you only get a visual indication, no audio warnings
I use it to add the likes of red light cameras, McDonalds :embarassed: and Shell petrol stations to give me visual indications on the map

I had one of those liquid air freshener things from halfrauds.
Had it for a week and the thing leaked over my dash, ruining my clock and making a stain on the plastic trim round my HU. Unfortunately I couldn't find the friggin receipt.

to burn .mdf files you will need MagicISO. These a proprietary images files specific to that programme from what I can gather from the internet.

I've been using the RNS510 for a few days now.
I think its the best investment on the car ive made all year!
- I love the 3D navi map! Makes navigation so much easier.
- Love the nice simplistic displays.
- Like the fact that my music is easily accessible via the HDD.
- Touch screen makes it just a pleasure to use and keeps it button free.
- Makes the interior look more cleanier and simplified
- Sound quality, especially the bass, is alot better.
What i hate is the stupid voice of the women on the navi. Shame it cant be changed!!
-
I like it too, however I have a dedicated micro fiber cloth from all the finger prints left on the screen. Small grumble as it is a magnificent piece of kit. I also like how the zoom in and out knob is easy and quick to use. Just like the climate controls.
On the A3 Audi it's a silly switch which you click for each 0.5 degree change.

i went into a stealer today in Swindon and they said to buy the unit would cost near 2 Grand, they wouldn't say how much fitting would be.... they said however i would need to change my aerial on my car.
Is there anyway i can find out if my car is compatible with the unit before i order one, and does anyone know anywhere near Swindon where i can get it fitted.... i think the stealer would just rip me off!
Oh one last thing , i currently have the vw ipod connector connected to the back of my current stereo , could i still use this on this unit. Will the names then come up proper?
-

VW make a huge markup on the unit.
You can get imports from Europe for less than half the price (£500-900 depending on seller, condition, exchange rate).
It should fit all MK5 golfs, regardless of whether they're GTI or not.
Can't help you about the ipod thing...yet (I'm expecting and fitting the unit this weekend, so will let you know as I have the ipod cable). The name thing I think is more down to the unit and the cable, I don't think either is capable of sending track names unless you have highline fitted.

I dont have highline and what is mfsw?
I do get a tomtom style view (which is 3D) but you can also choose 2D should you wish. In the pic its showing "200yds" scale but it goes right down to 25yds which is more like tomtom.
I took my ipod connector out as i didn't see any point in keeping it as all my music is now on the systems hard drive. NOt sure if the names will come up on the unit with the ipod connection.
-
mfsw = multi-function steering wheel
It has buttons on the steering wheel which controls certain functions of the RNS510 like volume and music track.
-
no the names dont come up with ipod, but then you dont need it, as you copy music to hard drive.
you dont need to change your Aeriel, they are lying, just stick a GPS antenna in the dash.
-
Its making me want to upgrade my MFD2 even more!
I guess it interacts with the highline display just as well as the MFD2? The connectors to do this are the same?

For full iPOd control including names on the display you need the MDI, there are two versions, one replaces the cd changer in the armrest and the other version sits in the glovebox

That will work but will need converting with POIConvertor and then splitting into the different speed warnings

I have. Took a weekend to sort it out and about 3 discs that didn't show the cameras but it's all good now. Every month I just update the camera database with the latest locations and jobs-a-guddun!!
