When under car changing the CAT I noticed how bad these now were!
And indeed I have an advisorsy on the new MOT about them! Bah!
The flange or welding plates are squashed flat!
So advise please on best place to get decent new metal sills?
Are the ones at say Eurocarparts O.K.?
-
common failure on mk3's sadly. my old man made mine. i didnt know ecp sold them, would have been easier but then again me old man made the jacking points using thick steel plates so wont have any problems now.
-
You had an advisory on your mot and you didnt get anything done about them?
That is pretty irresponsible in my eyes, considering it is used on the roads. And is something as serious as the sills.
I bent one of mine slightly the other day, the jack basically may a little goove in it, as said i would probably let a garage make something up for there, as in the long run it will probably be a lot stronger than any others. As it will be of a custom metal.

Erm it was an ADVISORY therefore there is nothing wrong with leaving them without immediate action! If they needed immediate attention the car would have failed it's MOT! also Len has asked advise on where is best to get replacements and is therefore obviously going to fix the problem making your entire post rather pointless.

Not really, as i referenced to me having the same problem, and that when i enquired about it, just this monday to be exact when my cambelt was done. I found it would be easier to get it done by the garage with them making something up.

i got my sills from beaver auto panels...42 quid delivered for the pair and they were a really good fit with no trimming/problems fitting...they were pretty much like original...i would get beaver ones over ecp

An advisory is just that, any worse then it should fail.
-
Are you seriously going to replace the sills?? most people get them straightened and strenghtend with the rust cut out and plated if needed (its quite a major job getting the full sill done)
-
If an item fails an MOT then it is potentially dangerous.
So any advisories should be sorted as soon as possible.
What people don't seem to realise with MOT's is when something goes on the advisories list then its past its service life, its not actually a fail until its dangerous.
-
It might also be worth just getting them welded up and not using them, then jacking from the subframe, or the jacking points under the car.
even if you have to roll it onto wood, that is what i will do from now on.
And i never meant that just cus its an advisory it is dangerous, but it would be recommended to get it sorted like asap. I persoally would get it booked in when i pay for the mot on the way out! lol.

I alwas did the same with mine.

Ady mate if you saw them you would agree that they do need replacing! No rust at all but if I leave them there will be!
And I dont believe in doing things by halves, if a jobs worth doing then do it well is my moto.
Oh and Mikester you can keep sniping you wont beat me! Better people have tried and lost! They have gone I am still here!
Oh and shame you deleted that thread I actually had some excellent advice to give you about chavvy adaptors!
-
Chavy Adapters?
LOL. You really are old arnt you.
Whats more chavy.....your body kit.... Or using wheel adapters to fit different wheels to your car, SAFELY, that would look sick.
Jump on Edition38 and post this.
Dec.....Joe.... Kells..... Sorry guys, your all chavs :(
-
Just to prove how little brains you have here's what I was going to tell you!
These adapters will have to be approx 15 - 20mm thick. Now that means you are going to be increasing the track by 40mm in total. The extra 20mm each side will require arch work!
Not forgetting the extra strain it putting on your wheel bearings and the suspension in general.
-
Forum Gold.
FWIW on Advisories you should get them done in reasonable time but sometimes they're just stuid stuff you can ignore. My old camper had an advisory for a crack in the windscreen for something like 8 years on the trot. Get an advisory on brakes or suspension etc then yeah get it sorted. Rot is another grey area. Depends where it is as to whether to panic and get it done or leave it till you have the time cash.
Nick

No panic at all Nick. Car is sound for now. Its the jacking points that have just been crushed, the sills themselves are fine! Was just wondering if I should do them myself!
Never really liked the side skirts and they are gonna get ripped to pieces in the taking off so just thinking of what else I could do? Might look at other car sills and see if I can graft them on!
Was looking at the skirts on the 405 Mi16 and thinking Hmmm they would fit!

Never asked for advice on if i would need arch work, so stop trying to dig yourself out of a hole.
Just asked if the adapters were available in that fitment. ;)

I did/do mine leaving the sill covers on, screws out and wedge out the way.
When i bought it VW had just fleeced the previous owner for new brake pipes suspension bearings tyres etc etc to a cost of £1800!!!
and not even noticed/advised on the split crushed and rusty front jacking points.
The owner paid for all this then traded it in for a new one 8 weeks later!?!?!
Still its amazing how many garages and tyre fitters jack cars up on the sill edge makes me cringe
-
I have thick bits of cut up tractor tyre for jacking, not had a scratch
i did learn the hard way, badly bent the sill on my gf's old clio, oh well at least i haven't done it to a 'proper' car lol

Best thing you could do to a Renault is help it on the way to an MOT failure

I never jack a car on the sills, always try for a susp. mounting or subframe much safer.
-
i had this problem on my old mk3 which my brother in law now has!, think it was mostly my fault as i jacked the car, did whatever work i did then reversed while still been jacked up  yup i was thinking the same 'what a noob' haha anyway punctured a hole so needed welding up and now its stronger than ever

Wayne mate I would if I could! The jack only just goes under the sills!
-
i'm dreading the mot in nov...
really think mine is gonna fail on the sills, from what i have dared to look at and from the state of the bottom of the wing i just replaced i dont think there will be much :(
how much are ya looking at for having them done??
-
If its just the "flange" (the half inch metal to metal bit) that hangs down, that been say squashed flat, usually backwards in towards the middle of car then it should be fine.
If like mine the jacking point area is also squashed in little then you will get an advisory!
Just a note here - I had 2 MOT's done at seperate places! The first one that failed it on emissions didnt even mention the sills! Mainly because it was their lift that did most of the damage!
-
The bottom of the wing is no big deal, if you catch it, or replace the wing.
The jacking points are more sinister though... Have you looked under your side skirts? Or had a propper nose about under neath? Chances are you are fine. Mine wing let go at the bottom, so i replace it. But all of the rest of the sill, and under side skirts was fine ;)
Commen to go on the wing, as the water/dirt etc.
-
i dont wanna look, lol!
but im gonna have to face it, will look on wed -
the rear wheel arches which im rolling atm arent brill...
the n/s jacking point aint brill but it may just be me being soft!
my mechanic has never said anything and he is normally sh!t hot at giving me things to sort well in advance!!

I used to have to drive mine onto planks of wood 1st.

Wood FTW!
Where and how would you jack the rear up from? Beam?
-
Yea the beam when you can get to it!
I use my small trolley jack first then get the big 2 tonner under the beam.
-
does anyone have a picture of their strengthened jacking point please?:)
