I know this is a bit of an odd question but i have jus got a ford galaxy 2.8 i have been told that it is basically the same enging as a vr6 and as im already a member of this site i thought i would ask hear first. The problem is when i got it home it looks like the wire has been taken off the temp gage and it was overheating it must of been very hot as as soon as i stopped it pushed all the water out. my questions are. i know that this must be the head gasket but are these engines prone to this. is there two heads on these engines or just one and can i get the head/heads skimmed or will they be knackered. thanks in advance  Aaron

Not sure if its the same as a vr6, but if it is theres only one head covering a very narrow V. Not prone to head gaskets that im aware of.
-
Early ones were noted for head gasket issues, could also be the rad blocked
-
It is the VR6 engine fitted in the galaxy, so only one cylinder head.
Early vr6's do suffer from head gasket problems.

Hi thanks all :grin:the head gasket is defernetly gone the car is missing like a pig as soon as you put your foot down. i went and moved it today and when i looked under the bonnet someone had unpluged the 3 block termanals the work the temp gage light ect. does anyone know if the head is likely to be cracked or are they pretty strong?

Maybe best to find a spare engine or a head.

Maybe best to find a spare engine or a head.
before doing this do a leak down test to see if the gasket is indeed the actual problem

or a sniffer test...or are they the same?? o.O lol

To do the job correctly your going to need to remove the engine, you cannot get the head off with it in the car, I would pick up a spare head, drop your engine out then whilst doing head and gasket you could also replace the timing chains.
-
Can you not get the head out with the engine in situ?
-
Ok. I did the job on my old mk3, i wouldn't say it was that simple either

On a Golf you have a bit more room, still not easy but under the bonnet on the Galaxy is a nightmare.

I remember it had 20 head bolts, three different lengths if i remember right

Got the head off today i cant see where it was leaking but there was more oil in the water than i realised so it must of been getting in some where. the problem i now have is that they dont do a haynes manaul for the 2.8 galaxy and the only golf one i can find dosn,t cover the vr6. does anyone know if they did a manauk for the vr6?
