Hey guys,
Looking for a MK3 GTI next month, possibly the 8v one. Is £800 enough to get my a tidy one?
Autotrader has a few but first ill ask here to see if £800 is a bit too cheap? Hope not tho lol.
Bear in mind that i'll probably be going for a £900+ one & haggling down to £800, hopefully.
Cheers people.

Depends whos selling it, if its a gargage now chance of geting a tidy one with low(ish) miles for that, but find a private seller and 800 would be resonable
-
I paid £320 for mine, ive spent about £150 on bits it needed but that all. So there are bargains out to be had.
-
Yeah, there are bargins to be had. As said you can get ones with small faults for like £500!
-
paid £750 for my 16v 1996 120,000 miles body is near mint and i live in the southwest where car prices are high compared to elsewhere, just take your time looking as mine has a few faults but nothing major thank fcuk

I payed £900 for my golf 8v P Reg gti 5door in black with 57,000 miles with only 2 previous owners (lady 1st) and a soldier (my mate) who never drove it as he was on duty in afghan, 6 Months Tax and Full Year MOT the day i bought it. I also knew the owner.. I've never spent a pound on it yet. had it 8months now. I thought it was a bargain, and was told it was by lots of people.
I'm sure if you look around u'll find a nice one, but dont rush into it and have a ruddy good luck at it b4 u hand over the coin :)

Brilliant guys, thanks for the help. :)

Go for a 16 valve if you can find one matey, more power and the same brake setup as the VR6

& insurance is exactly the same as the 8v from what the quotes i've been getting. Would love the 16v but not many about for my price range. I'll keep an eye open tho. Cheers.

I've just being checking out some insurance price comparisons for a 1997/8 16v against my current 1996 8v and can't believe the policies are coming up at virtually identical figures. I'm so gonna chop it in now.
More power, better brakes, more gadgets eg. Air Con for basically the same price and no considerable amount of change in economy either. Seriously what possesed me to buy an 8v in the first place?...although admittedly mine is in really good condition.

brakes are identical....and spec from 95 is virtually identical too (and so were the options list)
-
can easily get a decent one for 800 (bought mine for 800) will be selling it for around 600 though!

I thought mine was on the change over year for the 288mm brakes, I've not yet touched them but I'm sure the guy i got it from said they were the earlier ones as i mentioned i was going to be upgrading them. Obviously it's only a matter of measuring them to find out.
Mine came with a sunroof and no air-con, it's just one of those niggly little things i wish it had sometimes. It didn't come with front fogs either although i have robbed them from a donor 16v 6 months ago.
Anyway, the main thing is the engine. The 8v can be fun at times but it's hardly exhilarating is it?
