Just bought a Mk3 gti 16v and wanna know what i can do (within budget) to make it any quicker?
Ta :)
-
ya might wanna have a search on here, will be loads of threads on this!!
ya may end up with an on slaught soon... ;)
not familiar with the 16v but i guess air filters/induction kit and a good service will do a bit of performance :)
-
stripping out the interior is the cheapest and best way mate
other things you can do at resonable price
Good service
Air filter
Exhaust and De-cat
Cams
remap

Stick a VR6 lump in

He wanted it faster... and as we all know in the real world the 16v is the faster model (and can easily outpace the vr6 with a few simple mods)
Oh and i prefer the vr6 as its a proper cruiser

Just seeing if i could stir something up, as we all know the ADY 8v is the Mk3 to have, super cool

WORD!

I agree ady is the one (much better than my passat engine!! this needs 3000rpm before it goes!)

VR6 into a mk2, is a bomb....

VR6 into a mk2, is a bomb....
literally... :lipsrsealed:
-
too much weight up front.... handling wise the 1.8t or a tuned abf would be better
-
i have friends with a 1.8t mk2, a vr6 mk2, and a abf mk2.......
And the VR6 is the best. By far! lol.
Sounds a beast, and is a beast.

Find someone with a spangly Porker and attach a nice length of rope between your front bumper and it's rear...

The 16v is easy to make go faster!
Induction kit or drilled air box and panel filter.
A good exhaust system and dont bother with decat as it dont give much more!
Then an RTech remap!

Im sure it is the best in a straight line! How bout the corners
-
Sounds sick mate, and spins them up all the way through the gears. lol. All that matters mate, lol!
To make your 16v faster i would think about a cam..
-
Lose as much weight from the car as possible.
Get the handling and brakes sorted, sorting the handling will make you faster cheaper than engine mods.
Panel filter and drilled airbox will give you a few hp.
Aftermarket cat back exhaust might free up a couple of hp and will save you weight.
De-cat pipe may give you a couple of hp but you will need a cat to pass your mot.
Decent remap to suit your mods.
Lightened and balanced flywheel.
Polished and ported throttle body will give you a couple of extra hp, too much and it could make the car jerky.
Cams will work well but best used with a ported and polished head.
Match porting your inlet and exhaust manifolds will be next.
Throttle bodies and management.
According to some info from Ess Three on here before he did some dyno comparisons and:
Airbox mod and throttle body porting were worth a few hp each.
Exhaust and decat both made no real differance.
Lightened and balanced flywheel felt like a 30hp increase.

What?
Next thing you'll tell us the 8v is faster than the 16v

The 1.8T with all its extra bits is actually only slightly heavier than a vr6....
-
Drive a 1.4 for a week, makes the 16v much faster
-
Backbox, drilled airbox panel filter will make a world of difference
-

How much does the 1.8t weigh compared to the vr6?

And the difference in delivery of power through the rev range.

Another interesting question is why do people underate the vr6 in the golf?
No-one has a bad word to say about the corrado vr6.
There is only 69cc difference between the two engines, but 16bhp difference.
That would suggest that the AAA lump in the golf is actually detuned.
My old vr6 made 190bhp on a rolling road, it had k&n filter, jetex full system and a remap.
The OBDII vr6's are supposed to make nearer to 190bhp standard, well according to the golf mag a few years back.
-
Yeah, the obd2 vr6 does make more power when allowed to breathe. And its a good engine, pulls all the way in all the gears, at all speeds, you dont get to 80 and slow down the acceleration, it just keeps pulling and wanting to put u in a ditch! lol
-
If i'd added cams to my old car, i would easily got over 200bhp.
Also i could of added a VSR, and given the car seriously more low down torque.
Who says the vr6 isn't tunable?

Then just chuck a supercharger, buy a 3 pack of boxers for when u ruin ur pants and put em in the glove box, and your away. lol
-
A supercharger is fairly big money. Granted it will give big power.
I'm just tired of reading people slag off the vr6, usually jealous 16v owners
The above i've listed aren't big money, except maybe the VSR.
-
Indeed, the VR6 is an awesome engine.
Its just finding a good obd2 to use at the moment for me, that isnt 300miles away! lol
-

Where's best to take material off the flywheel to lighten it?

Not a good idea to do it yourself my friend! A job for the pros I believe!

Another myth about the vr6 is it isn't suitable for a mk2, as its too heavy.
The corrado is a mk2 floorplan, and it copes fine with a vr6 engine. No-one ever complains about the corrado handling poorly.
The problem is the suspension, it needs uprating to cope with the vr6.
Infact the standard suspension on the mk3 isn't good enough to cope with the vr6.

one a lot of people also forget is tyer pressures
i'm running an abf with cabel change passat g60 syncro box so mine is quite nose heavy, i'm getting best performance on short track sessions / road with 35-36psi in the frounts. a few extra psi can make find you a whole shed load of extra grip

I have not read all the responses but I have a very quick tip on how to make this go quicker.
Put a MK2 shell around the engine and BINGO, your handling is sorted out too! :D

Audi/VW spares Angmering, Sussex (Worthing), i know they got one i saw it there last week.
Nearly Tempted to buy the BBS rims but thought better, might actualy make my car worth knicking
