Title: Flushing coolant
Post by: maxp on 31 May 2009, 09:42
Planning on flushing the coolant today. Did a search but couldnt manage to find if there is a screw on the radiator that drains the coolant?

Failing that gonna have to remove the pincer clip attaching the hose to the rad.

I think it's as simple as that mate, just detach the hose from the bottom of the rad.

Drained it today, went to refil it with some g12++ (no idea what was in there before), and only put in about 3l before it was totally full. I don't think I may have got all the old coolant out. How bad is this? And for next time, should I run the car after I drained it to get the last bits out?

think you have to take the stat out to drain it completely.
always good to run a hose through it to get all the crap out the head and radiator

should be fine, keep an eye on temps in case you have air lock

Phew, was getting abit of a cold sweat about corroding the engine / rad

it only happens if you run it without coolant for a long period of time. the other advantage of coolant is it doesn't freeze at 0, needs to be much colder.

a member on here ran with straight water in the winter and it froze. not good.

Corrosion aside, is there a realistic chance of the two coolants forming a gel which would obviously be disasterous? I would of thought not, but being the internet, i have read reports of such things.

If you pulled the bottom rad hose off and let it drain dry, then you should have been able to get over 4 litres in. Be very careful to bleed the system as it sounds like you've got an air lock.
