im really sorry if its been asked before.
basicially im about to start this conversion for my g/f and her mk3 gti 8v
awaiting arrival of the main donor parts, we`ve ordered
mk3 vr6 engine and box (complete engine with started alt etc)
exaust manifolds, and front pipe
ecu, harness, clocks,
gear linkage, transponder from orig key,
transponder reciever, relay box
think thats it, is his a straight forward enough transplant or are there any common probs i should be aware of, im a mechanis and ive good auto electrical knowledge, just tryin to be fore warned of any probs i might encounter on my way
and who better to ask than the pro`s
brakes are not an issue as thankfully they were uprated a while back for larger discs etc
Many thanks in advance

think i read somewhere about the factory vr's having uprated wishbones/suspension components. may be wrong though :undecided:
-
Your going to need pedal box etc as the VR6 is hydraulic and your 8v is cable, radiator and driveshafts are also different.
My 2pence worth, it is a lot of work when VR6's are so cheap at the moment plus I would check your insurance as a converted car will be a lot more than a factory.
Good luck if you go ahead with it.

nope only the front springs are different (although the brakes changed on the vr6 from 280mm in early 94 (rather than late 95 like the gti) to 288mm)

Phew lol thanks for that, :smug:
still a little worried about the vr6 gearbox possibly being hydraulic

It is 100% hydraulic all VR6’s and 16V’s were.

Its easy enough to change to a hydraluic clutch, You dont actually need the whole peddle box, just the peddle, spring and the master cylinder, its simple enough to change.
Same with the gear linkage, simple.. bit fiddly sometimes.
-
ok thanks for the responces..
now a vr6 pedal box and piping added to the order...
thankfully the supplier had not dispatched the order yet so i managed to have the bits added to the pallet...
anything else i should know before i start, common headaches, troubles etc...
im looking forward to doing the conversion (have booked a week of work too )
i believe its harder than dropping a vr6 into a 16v.
i questioned my supplier regarding the drive shafts and he said they are the same, am i mis informed? will i need vr6 driveshafts too?
i will take progress pics of the conversion and post em on here after for anyone who might care to see em..
thanks for the help and guidance

Not sure what gave you the idea it is harder to fit it to a 16v as that shares a lot more with a Vr6 than an 8v.
Could I ask why your doing it, seems a lot of work / trouble when Vr6 prices are on the floor at the moment.
-
also the 8v exhaust is smaller than the VR6. So you need the full exhaust all the way out, otherwise it may overheat.
Also unless u change the ignition to the VR's the key wont start the VR6 ecu, so you need to get the ecu de-imobolised, or change the ignition to the Vr one from the exact ECU.
And wayne, im doing this conversion, as i cant find a nice 3 door VR6. But i can make a nice 3 door 8v, and sawp it over. Plus i already have the 288mm brakes, so its just a bolt in and out job.
Plus i have too much time on my hands. And like the fun of building it. Wont drive it! Heck, that would cost to much to fill up.
But the sound makes me wet myself...... ROOOOAR!

I know, understand and respect the reason why your doing it, but unless your really in love with you 8v seems a bit pointless and a lot of work when they are so cheap at the moment.

Yeah they are cheap! Which is good for me. Cant wait to go pick one up, and watch the owner tell me how amazing it is, for me to explain im going to scrap all of it, and just keep the engine. lol.

Are you planning on replacing the timing chain while you have it out of the car.
Your way with a donor car is the best way as it gives you all that you need to do it.

Yeah, going to do the chains for sure.
Going to rip the 8v out, and clean the bay up, replace all of the mounts etc. Then clean up the VR6 to newish state, do chains, give it a good clean out and fit it in. Going to get a 421 manifold and decat, then just use the donar cars exhaust for the rest of the way down for now.
Take all of the ecu, loom clocks, pedal box etc for myself.
Strip the car down for stuff i can sell on forums, then get it collected and scrapped. The running gear is guna go to a mate with a mk2 doing the conversion probably. lol

lol thread highjacker
sorry wayne its how i worded it, i said i believe its harder to fit vr6 into 8v than 16v
my reason for using the 8v is that my g/f`s car is MINT, she really really looks after it, i believe to find a vr6 in the same cond as her 8v would be very hard and costly too..
thanks very much for the info,
i will be using the vr6 ignition, transponder reciever and key transpond, ecu loom etc so hopefully i wont need to have the ecu de-immobilised
also she is ordering a full stainless exhaust for it so thats the exhaust size issue sorted too..

No worries, keep us updated.

no probs i will keep ya all updated and no doubt i will be on crying please help this wont work etc etc lol
as a matter of interest, i have obd software leads etc is it possible to DIY disable the ecu immobiliser, or is it a pro job?????
just incase i come to need it disabled
-
If youve got the doner vr6 chnage the ignition barrel and door locks. The ignition barrel will sort the ecu prob.
Or ... hide the vr6 key near the column.. not sure how insurance friendly this is.
Or .. If you have vag com you can interrogate the Key code from the 8v ecu and reprogram the vr6.. I think rosstech have an article on it.
-
Costs about £100 to get it de-imobilised. And i defo wouldnt try it yourself.
And horney... im not used to being so elite that i have 6 cyclinders. Naturally i type 4! lol
-
Its reallu not that hard of a conversion, the driveshafts are the same and even the loom plugs straight in. go for it mate!
-
Great the help and advice on here is greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone
the ignition issue,
can i just use the vr6 ecu loom etc, then replace the 8v transponder reciever under the dash/collum
with the vr6 one,
then
remove the chip from the vr6 key and put it into the 8v key, this way i would be using the 8v key mechanism, barrels, keys etc, but the key chip would be transmitting the vr6 info to the vr6 reviever behind the dash/collum??? ( Surely this would work ok??) :undecided:
anyone??? lol
im a mechanic and a good with electronics/electrics etc so im quite comfortable, however im a vw virgin  so learning the tech stuff...
yeah i have vag com..
also why shouldnt i attempt the de-immobilising??? (although hopefully i wont need too)
is it possible for the diy`er??
-
You can do exactly what you said and it will work.
But simplier is just to duck tape the VR6 key inside the steering column trim. As it will be close enough to the transponder all the time....
Up to you if you want to fart about with the keys or not really.

Yes that will work fine, you could tape the vr6 key inside the column however you might issues with both keys being coded and may lead to it not starting.

i am thinking of this conversion, is that really true u can just plug a vr6 lump straight into an 8v with no wiring? am i being a bit stupid thinkin i can do this with not much knowledge about cars and help from friends?

Much easier with a donor car, you still need the engine loom / ecu plus a lot more.

would this be any good?
and is it true u have to weld engine mounts?

glad i asked the guy said it would go straight in, cheers for answering my questions im gunna try find someone local whos done it to do more research b4 i go digging myself a big hole :)

No worries, your best bet as I said earlier is to try and find a complete donor car.
-
With a donor car, once you have broken the easy parts of the car, and sold your 8v engine. The conversion will only probably cost you about £400 including a full new exhaust system.
