I've just had 2 front tyres fail on me within 500 miles of each other due to very odd wear. Both tyres looked fine with good tread all the way accross and about 5mm left but both wore right through at the botoom of the inner sidewall. I cant think what would cause this. I thought tracking but had that checked and it was spot on. The car had done 12500 and 13000 miles at the points of failure and I do lots of short trips and car park manouvering mixed in with occasional longer trips. Both tyres failed during long motoway trips.
Any ideas what would cause this?
Thanks

Bet they are Dunlop Shytemax's?
If so thats the (common) problem with this tyre. Bin them.
If not... can't help!

+1 as above :D

I'd take the tyres back to the suppliers/fitters and ask that they be returned to the manufacturers. They could be part of a faulty batch. Only way is to seek a response from the manufacturers and the best way to get that done is to go via your suppliers/fitters. I take it they were supplied by a reputable company and were for the UK market (some cheaper tyres have been imported into the UK and were not meant for this country), so check the rating and manufacturing codes.
However, if both tyres have worn on the inside, it may be that your front tracking is out, sounds like you have too much toe in in your settings if both have worn in this way. Driving over obstacles like speed humps and sleeping policemen can put the settings out, especially if you straddle these (you should drive straight over them, in the middle, alternating between searside and offside wheels and at a S...L...O...W speed. Suspension bushes can also fail because of these raodside hazards (bollocks to traffic calming ). Get the tracking/wheel alignment checked before fitting new tyres - a 4 wheel alignment would be best.
Put your new tyres on the rear, not the front.
As for Dunlop Sport Maxx - had them factory fitted on my old GTI - did 15800 miles without any wet/dry issues and they had plenty tread left when I sold it. Better tyres out there, yes, but they ain't that bad.

There are worse tyres I agree. But I personally had to change my fronts as the inside edge wore away to nothing even though there was plenty tread on the rest of the tyre (and was in fact still legal) but I could see something was wrong. I had the alignment checked and it was perfect. Then I found the many people complaining of this issue with the same type of tyre.... doesn't take a genious to see what the problem is.

So, I've had the tracking checked and it's fine. The tyres were original fit Bridgestone Potenza Re050 225/40 R18 on Monza II's so definately not dodgy imports. Sounds from what's been said that others have seen similar problems on some other tyre makes so think I'll change the make when this lot have worn out.

 Shytemax falsely accused (this time...) I've not heard about the issue with that tyre, AFAIK it was only the dunlops that suffered from this problem :undecided:

i had a similar problem with my sportmaxx too... now switched to Goodyears

Hi...
My 18" Bridgestone RE050's did this, But the 19" Sport Maxx was spot on.
My GTI was a June 05 birth and had Monza II's on.

Do you have these speed humps in your area?
They're everywhere in Northampton and they've cost me hundreds in uneven wear over the years!
When you say you're getting the alignment checked, is this a £20 laser job or a £100 digital alignment with printouts?

Both fronts on my GTi had same problem. They were original factory fit Dunlops with approx 18k miles.
Had tracking checked and it was spot on. Chap said, GTi's do carry a little neg toe in.

The wear on mine was a little further towards the sidewall, kind of on the 45 degree angle between the main tread and the sidewall. Closer to the one on the left picture. My first went at 12500 miles and literally wore right through and failed when there was 5mm left on the main tread.
I do drive over about 5 speed cushions similar to those in previous post each way on my 3 mile commute to work each day. I guess thay may not help!

Thats what the issue is. Cant be anything else. Not sure why they would wear so much just by going over them, but its really the only explanation for it....

Get a proper laser wheel alignment print out at a garage listed here: http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=alignmycar3 (http://www.multimap.com/clients/places.cgi?client=alignmycar3).
Should only be £20 for just the printout.
All the above garages use the Hunter Laser System which means you will get a print out and its also pretty straight forward to use (so that the chap doing the job doesnt mess anything up). Just be aware of the "just-car clinic's" etc.
That way you can see if it has too much toe-in on the front. Inner sidewall wear is normally due to too much toe-in
