Title: Phillips Bulbs....
Post by: ifti on 22 May 2009, 17:45
Im looking to buy these....

http://www.powerbulbs.com/product_detail.asp?prod=81

Are they the correct type etc for my MK5 ED30?
Is it an easy job to replace the bulbs??

Also, I'll be using the forum discount, and I'll get the sidelight bulbs as well - is there a step by step guide on fitting them?
Im a noob when it comes to this stuff so the easier the guide the better!!

Yeah thats the right ones.

The dipped ones are piss easy, you just turn and pull on the cover, you will see when you come to replace. The side ones are a different matter, they are REALLY hard to pull out, so hard that I ended up using some pliers as my fingers almost drew blood. As soon as I used pliers they came out easy so use them in the first place and save your fingers.

The dipped ones are the ones on the inside, right?
So its the ones on the outside that I just pull, using pliers, and do not turn before I pull out?

No the dipped are the ones on the outside that you jsut screw the back to get access and then pull them out. The side ones have a rubber cover over them which is simple to take off, its the bit when you try and pull the bulb out thats tricky and required the use of pliers for me.

How much difference is there between these and the output of a HID kit, say 6000k output?

I disagree. The sidelights fit into a pocket in the main beam.

Am I right in thinking that I will need 4 bulbs to replace dipped plus full beam? Is there any point in doing both?

More for matching. There's a huge difference between the Philips Xtreme ones and the standard ones in terms of brightness and colour. The Xtreme ones are whiter and produce a beam with more throw (you can see farther). I sometimes travel on unlit B-roads so I use mainbeams then.

Nothing stopping you replacing them at a later date.

For information purposes, the standard bulbs I removed out of the headlamps were Philips H7 too, just not the Xtreme versions.

Nice thread, I've made an order. If you go through topcashback.com you can get a further 10% cashback as well as using the forum discount (it seems), making this quite a bargain!

Cheers for that!! lol

On another note - how do you change the indicator bulbs??
Ive had a look at the main lights and sifelights and understand what you mean now - but couldnt find the bit for the indicators??

Changing the indicators was easy. Think there's a specific slot for them, like the mains and dips?

It's been a while since I've changed them.

OK, so lets get this straight.........(excuse the watermarks, not sure how the hell they get all the way up there!!)

This is what you turn and remove to replace the dipped beam with Philips X-Treme Power H7....

In the following pic, the top circle indicates what needs to be pulled out directly with some force, to replace with sidelights Philips Blue Vision W5W....
The bottom circle is what needs to be turned and removed to replace indicators with Philips Silver Vision PY21W.....

Can hardly get my hand in to the sidelights, and I thought I had small hands!! Will deffo need to use some pliers!
Once changed, does it push back in pretty easily?

All this, and I havent even ordered the bulbs yet! lol

Don't bother trying to do anything until you get the lights.

But yeah you're right. And the clip/spring next to the sidelight holds the mainbeam (also H7) if you want to change that.

As for the sidelight - search some threads. Most people end up with scraped knuckles and blood.

I removed the indicators and dipped beam lights, just to see how easy it was, and then put them back in. They seem very easy to do.
I havent attempted the sidelights, and probably wont until I have the new ones ;)

The difference is that a HID kit is illegal

So would these bulbs give you the same effect as a xenon bulb?

No, nothing will give the same effect of a xenon on bulb other than having xenons on your car or using an illegal HID kit. I think you would get away with HIDs as I see soooo many cars about that have obviously had HID put in and several forum members running HIDsd (admittedly not on MK5s) have sailed though MOTs, but its your call, Id advise NOT to use HIDs and just fit these.

They do give more of a xenon look to your lights by producing a whiter (as opposed to yellow) light that spreads further.

HTH.

My bulbs arrived this morning (4xH7 (main beam and headlights) and the free sidelights). All fitted and done!

It took around 20 mins, it's no-where near as bad as I feared. Best to start with the centre lights first (sidelights + mainbeam). Unclip and take the mainbeam bulb out, then pull out the sidelight holder - that way you get an extra couple of mm to play with! Needs quite a bit of welly, but I have escaped without grazed knuckles.

The sidelight bulb just pushes into the holder - once that's done on both sides, you will be ready for the so-easy-its-almost-unbelievable fitting of the headlight bulbs. Dead easy, just twist and fit. 30 secs a side.

^^^I did say they were easy. It's the sidelights that are more difficult..
