It was someone in a red GTI, MK2.
I was driving along on the inside lane, as normal, and he was in the middle lane. As I approached and overtook, he looked over and put his foot down!
This caused an automatic reaction in me, causing me to put my foot down, and almost leave him for dust - had it of not been for the traffic in front of us! I saw the smile on your face as well!!
We done this a few times, but due to the traffic we didnt get too far ;)
I then had to turn off since my turning had come up.
But seriously, a MK2 trying to take on a ED30?
On another note, how far can MK2 owners push their cars to get more ponies?
-
you can take the power to 400bhp+ if you fit a later 1.8t and tune that but even the standard s3 1.8t lump in a mk2 would eat your heavy mk5  Just because its old doesnt always mean it will be slow
-
Ha ha ha, I'd take it as a cheeky sign of respect from a fellow dubber. I'd imagine though that a fettled mk2 would give any mk5 a run for its money. What are the 16v's? 130-150 bhp? Power to weight would be impressive...
-
So you mean put a new engine in an old car, therefore your statement is contradictive as it is no longer and 'old' car.
A 400bhp mk2 would still struggle against a mapped ED30 as the Ed30 has computer aids to keep the power flow making it easier to use, th emk2 would waste most of it by burning the tyres up.
The point is, unless you heavily modify the mk2 it doesnt stand a chance against a gti, ed30 or R32. I wouldnt waste the fuel  (the wink signifies sarcasm by the way)
Its 140 mate (that was a long time ago when it was new) will need about 200bhp to match an ED30 and a further 100 or so to be quicker than a mapped ED30
-
ed 30 - 0-62 mph: 6.8 seconds
mk2 16v - 0-62 mph: 7.6 seconds
Less than a second in it, depending on the type of race you may be suprised who would win :P

I don't think thats true. 400bhp fwd vs a r32 is one thing but vs a standard mk5 gti/ed30 it will muller it if the driver has a modicum of skill. On a dry day if it got of the line cleanly it would murder a R32 as well.
-
wow - didnt think the MK2 could fair that well!!
This guys must have been either stock, or not as modified - since when I came up next to him, I wasnt even expecting it, but he suddenly looked across at me, checked out the car, then put his foot down!
I then put my foot down and caught him in seconds and overtook. As I slowed down again, allowing him to come up next to me, I could see him looking at the car and smiling/smirking! lol
We did it a few times and he wasnt really any competition for me at all - even if there was no traffic.
When he did put his foot down though, his car did have some grunt, which impressed me for a MK2.

well as stock they arnt much slower anyway [less than 1 second] although many mk2s will probably be worse if they havent had good servicing.

Yeah!!! I got a problem with your post!!
-
you 'new car' boys who dont know much about 'old car' tuning it never fails to crack me up how little u know!
(by this statement i mean a minority and not everyone )

  too true cookiemonster

Just stating this, not saying take it as gospel or anything, but a mk2 16v with a 2.0 bottom end, decent manifold and exhaust should put out 180ish if set-up correctly, resulting in the following (according to letstorquebhp.com):
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 180
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1020
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 179.30
0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.20
0 - 100 (Secs) : 15.95
60 - 100 (Secs) : 9.75
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.62
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 95.74
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.42
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 97.45
Stats given for the ed30 are:
Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 227
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1328
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 173.68
0 - 60 (Secs) : 6.31
0 - 100 (Secs) : 15.67
60 - 100 (Secs) : 9.36
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.69
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 96.79
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 14.49
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 98.48
Pretty close as you can see. In the real world you're probably going to have better in-gear acceleration, but it looks like the mk2 can still put up a fight
-
Iv had a few MK2 take me on down my way that I can only guess either have a VR6 or a 1.8T as they where fking quick !!!
-
weight is not on the MK5's side or any modern vehicle really, so quite often a supposed 'lesser older car' can show a modern vehicle a clean pair of heels.
-
you 'new car' boys who dont know much about 'old car' tuning it never fails to crack me up how little u know!
(by this statement i mean a minority and not everyone )
or in laymans terms, your cocks aint quite as big as you think
-
The mk5 ED30 with DSG has gone down the 1/4 in under 6 secs as standard so dont believe VW's stats
Remember that 1 sec difference was when it was brand new as well.

Was it being pushed by a top fuel dragster
I know what you meant though
-
not to mention the magic "traction"
-
R32 will do 5.7 :smug:
-
hahaha
this is why its so much fun embarassing newer cars
-
the in gear times are what matters...and thats the gear ratios...and a lot of mk2's are modded in some small way anyway...not seen many standard near me.
I'd still have another mk2 tbh...its the creature comforts and reliability that got me to finally swap...plus money woes at the time
-

Standard cars?! none of the R32's or ED30's were doing any where near that time at the pod.
The Jet car did it in about 6 seconds...
-
Wait untill you crash hard though, you'll wish you had 20 airbags (or however many there putting in them these days) then!

Better than this!

Yes standard Jay. Turbo'd mk 4's are running around 4 secs iirc.
Evo tested it at 5.8

That is top fuel dragster run times on a good day. I think you have been mis-informed or very mistaken.
Top fuel dragsters acheive 100mph in less than a second. An acceleration that is not comprehendable. There is NO WAY that any street car can come anywhere close to achieving that.

Haha just realized my epic fail
0-60 recorded down the 1/4

oh come on, does it really matter who's faster? If so go down to the pod and have a race. I like my mk5 because it is comfortable and has many creature comforts that the Mk2 simply doesn't have. The Mk2 on the other hand does have character and charm which newer cars do not. Swings and roundabouts, methinks.
On a side not, I did see in Next a Golf GTI Haynes T-shirt with a Mk2 on it, I think. I was distracted by the Mr T and Popeye t-shirts on the next rack.
-
indeed they are very different cars
ideally you want a nice comfy car like a mk5 for everyday use and a light nimble car like a mk1/2 for fun, you cant have both unless your loaded and can buy a r8 lol
-
My R32 does both just fine! Quiet and comfy on the motorway and great fun on the twisty stuff where it has loads of grip and huge cornering ability with 4wd
Im sure the mk2 is more fun, but i want to get from A-B quickly while having fun, not just having fun
-
OMG ifti! what have you started?! LOL!
-
im now more interested in the mr T t-shirt!
"I aint gettin on no damn plane!"
-
Brilliant thread !!!
-
it even got some of the mk2 owners in the mk5 section
And Mr T weren't a patch on Murdock
-
This thread reminds me of-

"Almost had me?! You never had me... you never had your car!"
-
^ OH YES HAHAH ! :D :D
-
I think owning both wouldn't cost that much, a Mk2 can be bought for around £1k
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STUNNING-1991-VOLKSWAGEN-MK2-GOLF-GTi-16V_W0QQitemZ190308304205QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item190308304205&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50
and a Mk5 GTI for around £12k. So quite reasonable to have both.

even less if you shop around...
-
One things for sure Mk2s beat Mk5s for more entertaining and surreal threads

Do you know....as soon as I saw this thread title I just knew it would be splattered with MKII owners. Even before I looked at the posts, I knew who'd be replying
Stock MKII v's stock MKV ED30 = no competition ED30 wins
Modded MKII V's Stock MKV ED30 = ED30 win or lose depending on the MKII mods and driver.
Modded MKII V's Modded MKV ED30 = Very interesting whichever way it goes
I've not seen a MKV GTI or Edition 30 go down the 1/4 mile in under 12.6 seconds in the UK, but I have seen plenty of MKII's go quicker
That may soon change though

Iv had a few MK2 take me on down my way that I can only guess either have a VR6 or a 1.8T as they where fking quick !!!
I've had a MK2 also give me a good run for my money, I was expecting to fly past - not so... chased me up and above 100mph. Still gotta hand it to the originals! Just shows what a great car it was in its day (and still is!)

:afro:

OMG ifti! what have you started?! LOL!
Hmmm, this was one of this threads that I created but later thought, hang on, this is stupid. Why did I create a thread on this - it wont even get past the first page!
Little did I know...........currently on page 6.
Carry on boys!
lol
On a side note - I didnt realise the MK2's could be modded so far TBH. Pretty impressive.
-
just a side note on mk2 power...... Theres a 700bhp twincharged monster about to break loose.... Be afraid!
-
MK5 are way quicker than MK2's that a fact! We are talking about depreciation, right? :D

Turbo'd R32 anyone??

I upset a CTR the other day in mine. Much amusement as mine looks a bit hanging at the moment!

Easy with the right know how, look at BIGDUB. CAN be done even with a MK3! :D
-
Had the same a couple days ago, an older bloke in a nice black MK2. Was following me for a good 10 miles of dual carrigeway - roundabout - dual carrigeway type roads. Have to admit...accelerating off the roundabout in second gear he was right up with me, but as soon as I went into third he became a spec in my rear-view mirror.

I wouldn't say the people in this thread do

There's a talented member on another forum who very kindly takes time out to make up these signatures  Quite a few people have seen them, and so have asked him to make them one. Its becoming a fad it seems! But you're right, they all look very similar!
-
I'd do you a MKII sig like it, but I can't seem to find a photo of a MKII that doesn't have the bonnet up and the owner 's head inside it

Have to say the thread turned out well! Most other marques with different mk's in the same model would be b!tching away for at least 50 pages!

how about my GTI is faster than every other car on the planet?
-
That should do a few, i can add something about ctr's but we need to think of the bandwidth
MK2's when new were over £20k, you can get them for peanuts now, i would say they have depreciated more :lipsrsealed:

Very amusing thread !!!
I have a Mk5 ED30 and a Mk1 16v at the moment, let's just clarify as an out and out performandce car my Mk1 would eat a standard Edition 30 for breakfast, no shadow of a doubt. Mapped ED30 .... well thats something else, at the end of the day its horses for courses. For the last 10 years I have had nothing but MK1's, 2's and Corrado's. They are fantastic - to me - the pinnacle of VW motoring. However, the reason I bought the Edition 30 as I was needing a car that was a little more reliable, not saying that the Mk1's, 2's and Corrado's where not reliable, quite the contrary, but they needed an element of "upkeep" that would sometimes lead to a period of time under the bonnet on a dual carriagway. At the time - this was merely a part of "motoring" and I never batted an eyelid regarding it. Now I work shifts, I couldn;t be doing with that after a night shift at 7am in the morning having been awake for 30hrs plus - thats where the ED30 comes in - no need to worry. -9 outside in freezing cold wales - no problem - air con on - heated seats on hey presto. Mk1, mk2, Corrado - hmmmmm ..... urrrr .... no - but thats a part of the charatacter of the car and the reason I could never be without one. Wan't fun - take the Mk1 - my 300bhp Ed30 is a weapon to put it mildly - wan't to scare your mates - take the mk1 - want to go tearing through German Autobahns at 170 mph take the ED30, driving to the South of France, take out a girl etc. Trust me I;ve travelled extensivly in Mk1's and Mk2's one year taking a well fettled Jetta 16v complete with full roll cage, seats, doorbars etc etc on a tour around france without "major events" occuring ! This is a chicken or the egg type of argument ....
Guys with Mk5's - even remapped 300bhp + ED30's YOUWILL COME ACCROSS SLEEPERS THAT WILL BE FASTER - TRUST ME !!!
A fettled Mk1 or Mk2 has a certain balance and nimbleness (if thats a word) that the mk5 just doesn't have, I love them all - HORSES FOR COURSES.
-

yes i was, wasnt criticising, i just noticed Hurdy, whitegti & joesgti had very similar sigs and i thought they were quite good!
not got anything against 'mk5 guys' Gareth so dont get paranoid! actually seen your ed30 about a few times in Ammanford, dont think i have seen a shinier example, very nice!
