Title: Windscreen Install
Post by: gavL on 17 May 2009, 15:08
Anyone got a guide on how to replace a windscreen? Neither me nor my Dad have had to do this before and need any advice as well, like if its worth using any kind of a bond etc..

I tried searching and just found lots and lots of 'I need' threads..  :(

No bonding on a MK2, its a rubber seal, need some string and washing up liquid, put the string round the seal where it goes onto the car apply a small amount of pressure to the outside and pull the string out, as you pull it the seal should pop over the lip where it sits, put the washing up liquid round the seal as it helps it slip on, but i woukld recomend getting a quote from auto window screens or someone like that as from memory its not that expensive with the glass, the first one i did i broke the glass applying too much pressure so ended up getting a another screen so next time i got someone to come and do it and i think it cost me about the same as buying 2 screens from the breakers.
(there was also a small chip on the corner of the screen where i cracked it so if you get from a scrappies make sure there are no small chips)

Check http://www.autoscreens.co.uk/quoteme.html for a quote, i think i paid £50 many years ago, it was definatley somewhere around there cause it was the same as my excess.

It's a piece of pi55, wouldn't put it through the insurance as this is part of the reason we all get extorted by insurance companies cause windscreen companies then charge a fortune for replacing a windscreen.

Did mine a few years ago when doing a respray. My advice would be green fairy up liquid, parachute cord( or similar for putting around the seal) Plenty of patience. Don't force it!! Provided the edges of where the screen sits are free from rust etc it should go in no problem. Def a two person job, one on the inside pulling the cord out and the other pushing.

If memory serves I put it in bottom first pulling the cord out where the rearview mirror attaches.

Hope this helps

i'd have gone with grease both as a moisture barrier and because you wouldnt wash your car with fairy liquid due to the salt in it?? that'd corrode sh!t quicker and never dry up??

Cheers for all the info on that :) Used some washing line and fairy liquid and went in easy, just had to put some force on the line pulling for the corners apart from that its well easy :) Thank god for non-bonded windows :D

I've got it in now and my new bonnet on, just got to wait till the end of the month, work out my burget and get the bonnet sprayed :)

Go on my son, well done.

Re getting bonnet sprayed, i'd stay away from any airbrushed unicorns or damsels with coiled serpents, but that's just a personal preference

Hahaha! I was thinking of getting a nice Unicorn put on, it really does tempt me

Spraying it black till I can afford to spend out some real money on a good sprayer.

 Go with some black board paint. That way when you're parked up you can get the chalks out draw a unicorn or a trans-am esque bird, safe in the knowledge it'll wash off in the first shower
