This will just be a short little piece as the boss man wants a proper write up and photos etc.
For those who don't know the Berg Cup is a hill climb event held around mainland Europe, mostly in Germany but the first round and also the closest is in Luxembourg, which is where i went. Why is this of interest to me and maybe you? Well the cars of choice are retro VWs, Opels, NSUs etc etc and generally run small capacity, high revving engines. We're talking 200bhp out of a naturally aspirated 1600, but revving to 10,000+ good times!
So myself and 2 othersset off friday evening and got to our hotel in Luxembourg at about 11.30pm. Next day we drove off heading for the town where this round was being held but before we got there, we saw a road closed off and opposite a field with a sign saying 'specatators', so in we went. The track is a normal road 363 days of the year, but it was super smooth and twisty so for the remaining 2 days its a race course!
Walking up the side of the road to the town is bizzare in itself with crazy cars flying past at 30 second intervals but getting to the town is weirder still. Imagine a small town, but everywhere you look are race prepped cars parked up! Its not just little retro cars, there was an ex-DTM Judd mercedes and a DTM Astra which sounded mental! I'm not too up on race cars and couldn't work out all the categories but there were alot of what look like F1 cars driving about too. Its bizarre walking amongst them all, the locals rent out their driveways to the race teams, but if not they just park up their trailer and camper on the side of the road and set up camp!
Anyway, enough typing... photos!

yeah it was mad, using a hot air gun they shave off a layer so they are clean and sticky, then wrap them in cling film and drive down the course to the start line?!

Have been a massive fan of these for so long now, just never had the time of money to really go.
However, with things staying as they are, i shall be going next year (the missus has already been told)
You cannot beat the sound and the sheer speed of the cars considering what it is that it powering them.
Muchos jealousy.

Yeah its bonkers. On the saturday night we went to Germany to see a guy called Rolf, of KWL Motorsport. I'd never heard of them but they are legends apparently, do alot of the youngtimer cars. They have a mk1 scirocco that was raced round the nurburgring with a new scirocco for its launch. Epic car. It recently entered a race at Hockenheim (first time in 5 years) and won by 2 minutes!!!!
He had a 2ltr 16v mk1 there as well... "how much p.s?" "oh for long races 270p.s. short races over 300 p.s" Nutter!
As for sound.... that Delta S4 was something else!

I too have been a fan of this series for a while, you're a lucky fellow Joe. nice write up and great pics too.

I took over 300 photos so had to pick a few that summed it up. Liek i said I'll be dong a full write up on the weekend.
Cost wise, the event cost 15 euro's to spectate, bargain really, the crossing was stupidly expensive because of the times we went/came back. Hotel was more than planned but it all books up so early you don't have alot of choice. Through bad timing/driving round Germany etc etc there wasn't much drinking or eating but it was about £200 each, which aint too bad for a weekend away but considering with a cheaper crossing and hotel you could have done it for half that.
-
Sounds like a perfectly viable weekend , might check next years dates and see if it could be tied into a trip to the ring , proper motorsport inspired holiday
-
That's much cheaper than I would have thought did you take the passat for diesel sipping goodness?

Yeah it wasn't too bad, the hotel was something like 180 euros with the three of us in a room, crossing was £160 or something then food, diesel and not alot else. The passat is a 1.8t, we took my mates navara which isn't economical really, especially when trying to avergae 100mph on french motorways.
My favorites were the beemers, the Martini Fiat 127 and the 6N2 polo kit car... which were built in Hampshire?! always liked mercato blue polo's but wide arched f**kin quick ones is even better!
-
I always thought your passat was a TDI, ha ha.
It would be interesting to find out who in Hampshire prepped the cars and pay them a visit for a nosey round.
I'm thinking next year this could be a nice little weekend get away with a tent and beers.

The 6n2 polo's were made as kit cars in hampshire apparently, I'm sure i could find out who/what/where. I wish the passta was a tdi, next one will be!
