so my mk3 let me down big style last night...
chucking down with rain, pull up to let somone out of a space and the revs stick at 2000... I think to myself "thats odd" I rev it to see if it goes back down right and it sticks higher and takes a few seconds to come back down and again sticks at 2000rpm. person in front has pulled out so go to move off and car shudders, revs die and car dies... "sh*t!!" wont start, battery is fine (brand new yesterday) starter is turning over enginge but nothing happens.
Figure its probably dizzy. Anyone had this problem before?
it needs a new PAS belt which also drives the alternator so I know battery isn't charging properly while I'm driving and I figure that might be why the revs stuck high (the engine management trying to keep charge going to battery)...?? Is this a correct assumption?
could try cleaning throttle body... would that help?
thanks in advance for any help
-
full service followed by throttle body cleaning will help.
-
its booked in for service on the 13th... booked it last week and its the soonest they could do it.
cheers anyway khare.
Any other ideas??
-
Good service will always help
Check all the vacum pipes going 2 the manifold mate and
Give the TB a good clean
-
cheers guys. you not think its the dizzy then??
will have to somehow get the car back to mine before I can do the TB.. or anything else for that matter. Not goin to be today as the heavens have opened and the winds up to 50mph gusting to 70!
-
dad drove me around to the car just now and took off the distributer cap to find the centre connection totally black and covered in dust. tried to clean it up but as we did the connection went back up into the cap (spring broken or worn away completely) Ordered a new cap, should be here by saturday. rotor arm cleaned up ok so not goin to get another one right now.
hopefully that will get the car goin till I can get the service on wednesday.
thanks again for the help
-
give the throttle body a good clean, if you dont know where it is, tell me and i'll show you in a picture
-
ye, will do mate. got to wait till i get her home first tho
cheers, but I've already searched and found all the threads about cleanin it on here and had a look on the car when I was checking the dizzy earlier, should be straight forward enough to clean it up.
-
I will add the pas belt is seperate to the alty belt!! but for around £10 the pair sort them both!

I will add the pas belt is seperate to the alty belt!! but for around £10 the pair sort them both!
I believe BB but you sure?? there's two belts. one fat, one thin. I've got a replacement fatty. should I replace the other one too??
cheers
-
the thin is the pas belt and should be £3-4 and its the essential belt to replace!! (loosing steering half way round a bend at 90 isn't fun!!)
-
ah.... right!!!! CHEERS dude!, will get that replaced right away too.
and yes loosing steering would suck ass! although for my own pride the other belt needs done too
does the fatty just do the alty then??
-
the fat multi vee belt does the alternator, water pump and AC if you have it
-
no AC but alty and water pump I do have ... I hope haha!
so is the small one just PAS?
-
yes mate small belt only does your PAS
-
cheers mate..
and thanks too all for help in my time of need... I love you guys.... HAHAHA!!
*cough* sorry got a bit carried away..

right, story so far...
Definately needed new distributer, now fitted.
Definately needed new plugs, now fitted.
also changed air filter (old one was ) and cleaned throttle body.
Engine starts and runs fine, with no load, and is very smooth above 2000 rpm. BUT once it warms up it stutters badly and has no power at all - still revs freely above 2,000 but hesitates terribly under that - Cannot possibly use it on the road.
Seems to be some burnt oil out the exhaust which looks like it is coming from the crankcase breather system. Wasn't doing that before - so figure it is not the real problem.
Similiar problem on my Dad's car (Range Rover) turned out to a u/s Air Flow Meter, so I have got a second hand one off eBay to try and see if that sorts it. Should be here in a couple of days.
Any other ideas guys?? Thanks
-
Relays if you aint done em yet, ECU and Pump.
£23 pair from VW last saturday
-
cheers, will have a look into that one.
-
full service followed by throttle body cleaning will help.
If i had a penny for everytime this was said. lol
-
The throttle body was not actually that bad, certainly no serious build up of anything - wiped clean and shiny very easily, once it was off. Also checked the electrical connections to it (throttle position sensor I presume) and they are fine as well.
Thanks again
-
Did you just take of the air intake and wipe it out? Or remove it and do the other side of the flange?
-
i have the same problem as you with my 2.0 8v i have replaced plugs, dizzy cap, rotor arm, ht leads, coil, temp sensor, all belts and still it will drive for about 3 minuites and then start misfiring badly not drivable, no one seems to know the awserbut seems to be a comon problem,
-
sorry to hear you have the same problems mate... If i find the solution it might work for you too
As I said tho, got a new mass flow air sensor on the way so will see if that makes any difference.
again, any suggestions welcome!
thanks
-
finally after days of waiting for it to arrive, Mass Air Flow meter landed on my doorstep, now fitted and no change, still wont run right... ordered new coil.. fingers crossed...
-
ok that doesnt help then i have a new air mass sensor on the way was hoping this would be the solution to my problems, i need to get the car sorted so keep me updated as i will you if i find out the problems
-
cheers mate have pm'd you. but will def post up on this thread if I find the problem... I haven't driven a car in 2 weeks now... i'm goin mad!!
-
new coil.... no change... I'm runnin out of ideas...
-
sounds like your having fun there dude, have you had it plugged into vag-com! sounds like your chucking money at it! for 50-80quid you should be able to get it plugged in! could save money in the long run!
waht engine is it? is it the AGG?
-
ye, i am chucking money at it but I need a car. no option where I live. don't have access to a vag com at the moment. just read on another thread that it may be crankshaft sensor.... worth a try.
and yes it is the AGG engine.
-
i had very similar problems and it was the crankshaft sensor! but it only seems to be a problem on the p reg AGG engines.
have a look on other threads in the mk3 section theres plenty info about it. have a look also, its behind the oil filter, look for any breaks orwear and tear marks. pretty straight forward to change but you might need to drop the front engine mount out!
-
ye, cheers mate. just been out looking at it before you posted. looks pretty hard to get at... why can these jobs never be easy.... got a new one on the way.
mine is R registered but will have a look anyway. cheers
-
replaced number 30 relay. no change.
-
167 it is up next then lol
-
Check the vac hoses dude, better still.. but a metre of new vac hose and replace them, cheap as chips and a common fault
-
cheers mate, already checked them. they all seem to be ok.
-
so replaced the crankshaft sensor and no change to car. bit of a job as I had to remove front engine mount although didn't have to remove oil filter (which I thought I might have to)
so to date I have:
put in new air filter,
#30 relay (#167 is on the way but i'm pretty sure it works as it gets hot when car is left to run),
checked vac hoses,
cleaned throttle body,
crankshaft sensor,
full engine oil change,
chacked and replaced some wiring and connectors,
replaced dizzy cap and leads,
new coil,
new plugs....
think thats all so far. fortunately my dad used to own a garage so we can do most of the work ourselves, so at least managing to save money from that.
any other ideas??
cheers
-
 Dude you ain having much fun there!!!!!!!!!!"£$%
This has already been said, But you really need to plug the golf in to a fault code reader - saved me loads of dough in the past! Good luck with the motor!
-
 yeah..... VAGCOM is on the list of next steps. got a new water temp sensor on the way then its vagcom time...
problem is getting one to use, closest garage that has one is about 15 miles away and theres no way my car would make it in one piece or on the same day I left the house  looking into getting a diagnostic system but pretty expensive from what I can see for a good one.... any advice otherwise is welcome
having said that i don't regret any of the time or money I've spent on the car.... it aint been as well looked after by previous owners as I would have liked and a lot of the work should have been done ages ago (things like plugs and leads.. etc) obviously want to be able to use it but I'm managing without it at the moment.
After all the work i've done on it then it should run great when i get it sorted and I've learned loads about engines and working on cars, so not the best situation but has its silver lining and got to stay positive.
-
YAY!!!!!
It works!!!!
changed the water temp sensor (2 minute job) and the car runs great again!!!
thanks to all for your help!
