look legal to me. look down from directly above. can you see any tyre  tread? if no then legal as long as they dont catch the body work

You're probably pushing it. You may still get some interest from the rozz, especially if you're driving like a douche (not saying you do, just general knowledge), but IMO going with the first pic, I'd say your safe...obviously I'm not a law enforcer, so...don't take my word

I think your just and just legal, could you not have used thinner adaptors.

Arguably legal - not much better than that I'm afraid.

Whilst they look awesome, I hope you don't ever need to parallel park!

They look illegal to me man, the first two pics defo look like the tyre comes out further than the arch.

to me it looks legal. Tyre thread is within the wheelarch so that is legal.

Afraid I agree, can't you roll the arches?

In fact another forum has further discussions on this -

Maybe Mikester would like to join up on that one. But seriously there is some valid info on there.

Think it depends on the Copper that pulls you over really. Some may think it's ok and others won't - it's a matter of opinion.

I love the wheels but I HATE stretched tyres - just my opinion!  :lipsrsealed:

I take your running 25mm adaptors if so why not switch to 20mm, I think it would look better.

Whats the theory behind wheels not being allowed to be wider than the car???

It is all to do with the construction and use regs.

i cant belive how hard it is to find something solid that says its either illegal or legal  . even on the ukpolice forum it seems like they cant put there finger on it. i dont know what to do, ive put my standard wheels back on for the mo and it would kill me to sell my merc rims cuz i love those things

well ive just been to the police and they are going to let me know if there ok to use on the road or not. if there not i will be selling the whole lot (wheels + tyres, and adapters if needed) for 1k which i think is a seriously good price

That is a good price mate but if they are illigal i won't be wanting them either cos mines a mk4 also and can't be feckked havin the arches pulled
Just get the thinner adaptors ?

In a nutshell :

no specific law, several different regulations you can use for or against. Grey area, and will depend on copper's mood and interpretation if they deem it to be unacceptable. if they do... you risk 3points and a £200 cash fine.

The only grey area of legislation around states that maximum protrusion of any part from a covered arch is 30mm of poke.

police got back to me and said that aslong as the tread of the tyre is under the arch its ok if the side wall is sticking out, so they said im all good  gonna ring them back 2mz and ask if i can get it on paper so i can keep it in the glove box just to be safe

Good result then, I would still run thinner adaptors.

Can't believe you went to the police! fair play but I'd be happy with the set up you have there it looks great! The tread is inside the arch so put them back on and show those bad boys off!

I can't believe that this issue has been discussed for years with thousands of pages of deliberation...and it's been resolved in one direct approach.  I think if you were to scan any police confirmation of what they said and start up a new thread regarding it the link would be viewed and the confirmation downloaded a million times.

Still doesn't make it concrete. Fair enough around his area he can wave the magic piece of paper to any arsey copper showing that their 'boss' says it's okay (and then probably get nicked for some other minor offence), but it'd get laughed at anywhere else in the country.

Amazing the lengths some people will go to to make their car look stupid and drive like a pile of sh!te but good luck getting a written confirmation from the police, that I would PAY to see! And the look on the first pig to pull you's face when you pulled your get out of jail card!
