Title: what DON'T you like about your Golf?
Post by: K1 on 23 March 2009, 19:16
As topic says. What don't you like about your gti?

For me the biggest disapointment is the gear shift. It's vague n loose IMO. My previous rx8 had much better shifter so does my frds civic type-r. Hell even my sisters Suzuki swift sport feels nicer. All Japanese cars oddly lol. The dealership isn't that great tho still better than BMW IMO.

discussed elsewhere, but my pet peeve is the sliding seat mechanism. No bugger can figure it out when getting in the back, and when the seat is forward they always tilt the seat before sliding it. Invariably means me getting into my seat with the steering wheel under my nose, and taking 2 days to find my correct adjustment position. Bad times.

Seat bolster is worn after only 35,000 miles.
Creak from the dash just above the radio.

Thats about it

Haha, i've got a scratch on the VW badge in the centre of the steering wheel, that pisses me off too, thought we were going generic!

Thought of another one. How sh!t my Monza II's look after 4 years, thats definitely the biggest.

We've had this thread before - my gripe is the poor tailgate design that allows rainwater to pi$$ into the rear hatch when you open it

Mk5 is the sh!t!!

The fact it isnt already remapped to at least 300hp and pretty much come with all the mods illyun has.

flimsy plastic interior, especially the parcel shelf where the plastic locating lugs have broken off rendering it useless. Just need to find a replacement now!

The recaros are a pain to get to the rear with 3 door (worth it though)

It doesnt have keyless entry and go (cant be that expensive, my mate clio has it!)

I think I've been on the forums for far too long today.. it took me about 5 minutes to register what you meant - and that included going through your posts to see what mods your Ed30 had to make it 300bhp

Mine would have to be:

1. single reverse light
2. indicators at rear poorly positioned and difficult to see when the brake lights are on.
3. Passenger seat belt buckle keeps banging against the B pillar.
4. Would be nice to have a warning light on the dash for the front fogs as they do on the rear ones.
5. Hi line computer not standard and not mentioned or recommended by the stealer when purchasing !
6. White worm on rear tailgate handle (just outside the warranty).
7. MFD2 not mp3 compatible even though new it cost over a grand !
8. Pretty sh!te ipod integration unless you have deep pockets for RNS510 or after market.

Even with the above, would I get another. Definately, absolutley fantastic car.

Warning light for low washer fluid should be standard, even my 06 Astra had that and all the latest VXR's have keyless entry and go, quite a cool touch.

And lol @ illyun

I wish I'd ordered mine with some 18s, then again I don't really like the Monza IIs, and pescara's weren't an option. Oh, and I'm annoyed I cheaped out and didn't get DSG. If I buy the new model in a couple of years I reckon DSG and a set of those funky turbine looking Scirocco alloys would be on the spec list.

Aside from features? I miss the grunt, 4wd, and driving position of the WRX, even if I don't miss the mini cab interior. That's about it though.

The two wheels that adjust the dash lights and headlight aim are squashed together and hidden.
Terrible ergonomics and dangerous to adjust. (and carried over into the Mk4.75)

Ditto... never had a problem with this.

My pet hate of the Mk5 has to be the water coming in the window.  I can see a new set of switches for the windows being needed soon

Single reverse light.
The way the tilt/slide front seats work.
Water dripping down when opening the tailgate after washing.
The fuel cap not sitting on the flap - always falls off and could potentially scratch the car.
The cup holders don't hold anything securely that is bigger than a 330ml can.
Not being able to change through your preset radio stations on the MFSW - it just goes through whatever it can pick up instead of what you have stored.
Auto wipers not that brilliant - wipe when they don't need to and don't wipe when I can't see anything!

my mate has one jules and its far from hardcore mate and my other mate has the clio 197 f1 and again that is no more hardcore than the gti, the only difference is that they are built by dodgy frogs and they depreciate quicker than you can pay the finance off on them lol  take a look on youtube at the topgear hot hatch shootout with golf, vxr and megane 225 etc

im talking about everyday hothatch road cars you know mate slightly practical etc not stripped out and virtually turned into a rally car, next you will be saying the v6 clio is hardcore lol you know the one that wont go round a corner properly well it must be hardcore as it is stripped out etc plus are you seriously suggesting that you would part with your cash with the frog before the gti or r32 or ed30, i want what you are on bud
Title: Re: what DON'T you like about your Golf?
Post by: Jkctr on 26 March 2009, 22:25
If i wanted a fast FWD hatch i would happily buy the R26R! Will be more fun than any gti (or any other hatch inc the R32) will be (no matter how remapped) I can think of better cars for the money that will do a better job though.

The R26R is an everyday hatch, its a special edition like the ED30 thats all. Hell, my old ctr was hardcore compared to the GTI, the only luxury was aircon, electric windows and heated mirrors were introduced on the facelift!

The V6 is not hardcore, the mk2 was also much better at handling than the mk1.

Calling the GTI hardcore is a ridiculous statement, its a comfy cruiser with loads of luxuries, large alloy wheels and alot of weight!

Defenition of hardcore hothatch:

Low weight, good power (nice bhp/ton figure)
minimal options
bare interior
purpose built seats for support over comfort
LSD
minimal electronics (less to go wrong and less weight)

Basically everything the GTI isnt (or the focus st, vxr, civic type r, r32, cupra r, cooper s etc)

You mean like a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX (only .04 seconds quicker on the nurburgring) or a subaru imprezza (slower round the nurburgring)?

Sorry but the R26R is not 'some french sh!te', anyone that thinks so is a badge snob and has limited knowledge of cars imo, its an incredible car that excels at what it is made for. (evo 6 would be quickest then evo IX in 360 spec)

Im not arguing over it, im making my point a MK5 golf GTI (and R32) are as far away from hardcore as you can get! R32 is the perfect everyday car for me thanks, if i could afford an R26R as a second car for the weekend i would be a very happy man (although i will probably just get an E96 M3 when im 25 instead lol)

Nothing wrong with abit of harmful banter on a forum mate! Gets boring telling everyone about revo maps and how DSG works all the time

After owning a raft of French cars, I can say that the main thing that lets them down is the electrics (still). As to whether or not it's hardcore, hmm. True the Golf seems to be the best of all worlds, not really hardcore. Coming from a modded Subaru (and that WAS hardcore - in so many good and bad ways lol!! ), the older you get, the more you feel the need (and want) some comfort etc (IMHO)
I'll be interested to try the Focus RS (if possible). The new S3, quick, comfy but meh..... RS4 <dribble> oops, trouser accident. Pricey!! sorry, off-topic ;)

The Scirocco, awful, AWFUL car.  Civic Type R...hmmm. not sure tbh. The Renault looks intriguing but I would have major reservations about reliability. Not doubting the performance etc...when it works

Anyhoo, BACK ON TOPIC.....

What I don't like about the Golf?

The dealers. And the unwillingness to even perform the basics such as communication regarding a sale. The 1 dealership I've been waiting for a deal price for....ooo nearly 3.5 weeks  No, I'm not going to call them - they STATED twice (I popped by on my way home from work) that they would call.

The other dealership, wouldn't even return my call. There is one ray of light - I'm awaiting a dealership call (the conversation has been going (off and) on since last Saturday - Wrexham VW. They've got a VIP function which has everybody running around in circles. Although, by the time they do get back in touch, I fear we'll be into the next month - new targets etc.....

It's almost like they DON'T want to sell cars

SO, yes. The dealer network seems to be very poor (on my findings of 4-odd, so far)

Dan :)

Back up whats been said. After 5 years of Mk5 Golf Ownership 2 in 140TDI and 3 in GTI,

the build quality varies massively from car to car, general creaks and rattles being the most annoying,
with the top dash vent the main culprit

followed by auto lights and wipers with a mind of their own, water poring into the front windows, water into the rear hatch, both when opened.

White worms attacking the Monzas, wheel center caps, rear hatch handle,

DSG box deciding it likes to go into 1st instead of 2nd and rev its nuts off,

and as mentioned the back up , or lack of it, from dealers and VAGUK. The VW dealer network is an absolute disgrace in this day and age.

After all that enjoyed the GTI drive, but would never buy another VAG product again. build quality is just too low.

Its been replaced with a 325D M Sport , the wifes motor so don't drive it very often, but to be honest its a totally different class in terms of build quality and ride, and nothing much to note in performance either, GTI slightly quicker off the line, but in gear the Beamer will murder it.

My Beemer is not reliable.
The ABS pump failed
The rear coil springs keep cracking
Numerous engine sensors have failed
The seats ripped
It needs new discs each year
The steering rack needed replacing
The fuel tank was replaced
A high pressure hose to the steering failed

I bought it band new and it has done less than 55,000 miles.
The paint is good though.

Not my experience mate, but each to their own, the ingear pull of the diesel is not matched by the GTI, GTI accelerates quicker than the 325 from standing start, but where the torque is used by most drivers ie overtaking, then the diesel engine has much more to play with, anyway for a shopping trolley it suits the wife. (and yes it is the more powerful 3l 2008 engine)

Then again, I know someone else who is very happy with his beemer.
I guess its just the luck of the draw and the same for any car no matter which make - cant expect all cars to be perfect. Hit and miss etc.

As I stated earlier, the build quality of Golfs varies car to car, but I've owned BMs continusly for over 20 years now, and as with all German cars the great reliability issue is a myth in my opinion, I've had good and bad ones.

Guess it must be luck of the draw... A customer of mine bought a brand new ford mondeo about 10months ago. It still goes back to the garage on a regular basis. He is sick to death of it, constantly failed electrics... even had all the lights go out at night once. Hes so sick of it he just wants to give it back!!

I would suggest not buying a new model/shape as soon as they come out.. but waiting for a couple of years until they have fixed all the problems and made their little changes like they tend to do :nerd:

How can yours be the more powerful latest 08 engine, its a 325 3 litre 197bhp, the more powerful 330d 08 engine still 3 litre increased to 245 bhp and like i said over a short distance. A 197 bhp 2 ton car v a 197bhp 1.38 ton car from 20mph to 90 mph, i know which car id bet on, the bmw prob faster over very short distance.

yes ok lets all go and buy entry level golfs and not talk about performance and talk about how much shopping we can get in the boot, what do you expect from people who buy performance orientated cars.

Well thats what the Beamers for getting the shopping, your correct on the power its a ED 325D at 197HP, but just to end the confusion about either your ED30 or R32 from standing start or in gear, I think my 360 horses in the M3 will probably have enough in reserve to end that argument. Guess thats the difference between a performance orientated car and a real performance car.

Fair to say some of us have never grown up

How much shopping can you get in a 5 door GTi anyway ? These things are important when you have a small baby to lug around!

If we are talking about a std gti v 330d (08) then the bmw will have it hands down all day every day.

So will the old one. I was looking at the 330d and 335d before I purchased my Golf, the Golf is swift, but in every day driving it wont touch an E92 330d post or pre Sept 08.

Not sure about weights but power wise

the 330d is 244bhp
the 335d is 277bhp

if i remember correctly :nerd:

Nearly!

335d is 286bhp stock, but its the torque of 500nm which just blows everything away! Thats double the Golf Gti :)

330d new one is 245bhp, old was 230bhp. A chipped 245 330d will match a stock 335d its that good. Sadly my budget couldnt stretch to a 58 plate of any E92 :(

But the 230bhp 330d is still very rapid, and actually a bit more involving to drive - very different animal to the 335d.

But back to the GTi... to me its a totally different car so not right to compare, but I was totally smitten with it personally. I think its a lovely motor, and unbelievably pleased with my purchase!

I've had my fill of fast saloon cars.
You just can't get things into them.
Good for the weekly shop but when you want blokey things like ladders, fence panels, bicycles, cookers, 50" TVs and the like they are just useless.

Fast saloon cars is a phase men have to go through.  It's a revelation and a joy when you realise you can do better.

Im thinking coupe not saloon. the only thing that would convince me about the saloon is the smaller doors for when parking in the garage.. or if a seriously good offer came my way for a 4dr.

I owned a Z3 for 5 years. I had no issues with space. The coupe is a beautiful car, and a great comprise on practicality, looks and performance and style.

But then again I'm a single guy in my 20s.... what the f*ck do I need a ladder for? :D

That doesn't annoy me as much as it dribbling out of the bottom corner of the rear window (5 door owners probably don't get the problem though).
