Title: A few questions from a newbie :-)
Post by: fergusor on 23 March 2009, 11:57
Hi Guys,

I recently bought a new Mk5 GTI, a replacement for my 2005 Audi TT quattro Sport and loving it

I have a couple of questions about the wipers and lights.

1.  Are the wipers actually automatic?  I put them on intermittent and they sometimes do a double sweep then not sweep again for a while, even if the screen is covered in rain.  I had to force a sweep this morning, it was getting to the point where I couldn't see!!

2.  How do the automatic lights wotk?  I can be driving in fog or rain and the lights stay off (that happened this morning).  Other times I can be driving down the motorway in strong sunlight and they come on.  Are they speed sensitive as well as light sensitive?

Thanks,
Richard.

1. put the right handle one up from off and this is auto setting, there should be a little nib on top of the arm to set frequency.

2. if auto lights dont automatically come on then the ecu is not set for this and you need to either take it to a dealer or someone with vag-com to set the option up.

On the lights front - bought an import did you?

I get the same thing. At first it annoyed me that i couldn't turn them off but now i actually quite like them on. I may change my mind in the summer....

Your local steeler will chanrgew you somewhere in the region of £60 to turn this feature off. If you know someone with VAG COM software i am sure they could do it for you for a beer or five

Yeah I got it from Motorpoint, a German import apparently.

The lights are off most of the time but they do seem to come on a strange times.  I was going down the motorway on Saturday and noticed they had come on... it was bright sunlight and I was travelling over 80mph hence why I thought it might be speed related too.  By the time I'd stopped they had gone off.  It would be nice if they came on when I think they're needed but I can overide it I suppose so not a problem!!

I believe they are speed sensitive and come on at over 85mph (Dont tell the police ) on UK spec they are also light sensitive, i think the sensor is built in to the wiper sensor and measures the differences between the light outside and in to work it out. I genreally find mine to be pretty reliable, coming on at all the times i would put them on, including heavy rain,

The lights are speed sensitive.

I cant remember the speed, 76 or 86mph irrc, but I could be wrong.

As already said, you can adjust the sensitivity of the auto wipers with the small switch in the top of the wiper stalk.

My lights also come on randomly in quite bright conditions (and low speeds before you ask), but always come on in heavy rain (but not fog: I don't think any car does).

The lights should come on if you drive for more than 20-30 seconds at 140kph (80ish) according to the manual (was looking at it the other day), and should of course have a daylight sensor behind the rear view mirror to come on when it gets dark.  Although mine comes on when I come to a standstill at traffic lights underneath tree lines.  Which gets a bit annoying so I just turn them on.

Wipes I have noticed are a bit strange.  They wipe when there is hardly any rain and then not wipe when it is throwing it down.

Although I do like he fact that even on normal wipe they actually stop when you are sat at junctions and lights if the rain is light.

Is your manual in German?
VW dealers sell an English version for £40-50.
All your answers are in there.

My manual's in English so will have a look through it eventually... just thought I'd ask whilst I thought about it.

how you finding the GTi compared to the TT, from performance, mpg, comfort, handling, feel etc.?

I'm actually liking the GTI a lot more, though it's not as powerful or quick as the TT was... and strangely I was able to get higher mpg from the Audi if I was careful with it.  I put that down to the fact it was the lightened quattro Sport special edition so had no back seats, less sound proofing etc etc.

The GTI is a lot firmer too which I prefer, so all in all I made the right decision in changing it.

Im sure the lights dont come on until your doing more than 100mph.

They also come on in bright sunshine to help others see you. A safety feature I was told after I phoned the dealer to get them looked at :nerd:
