Hello all! Iam new to this site, just joined as I am on the verge of commiting to buy a mark 4 gt tdi golf with 92K on clock but it has a couple of slight issues that I need to check out before I buy! The main problem is the remote fobs do not work, the leds flash and I have just had them checked and they are sending the signal but not communicating with the car, although I managed to unlock once this morning with it! Also if I unlock the car but dont put key in ignition and open one of the passenger doors or boot the alarm sounds. Just called VW Dealer and they say this is correct?!! They say may just need new fob, quoted £38 plus vat which sounds fine to me although strange that both keys with the car are faulty! The other problem is the power steering belt sounds noisy when turning at low speeds, sounds like a fan belt slipping!, not sure how big an issue it would be?! Apart from that I am very keen and excited at the prospect of becoming a golf owner!!! I did post in general chat before I realised there was a mark 4 section!!
Any ideas or advice would be gratefully received as I really need to decide this weekend! One other thing, it has full history done every 10k but no evidence the cambelt has been done, if I need to do this do people always change the water pump too or not?!
Thanks a lot

ok cool thanks, I will try later when I see car again!

Well I bit the bullet and bought the car this afternoon, it is now on my drive  still got to sort the random locking and unlocking issues, still seems odd that I have to put the key in the ignition before I can open any other doors without setting the alarm off  so if anyone else has any thoughts then would be gratefully received!
-
hmm sounds like you've got a faulty door module(s)
does it happen with all the doors or just one in particular?
welcome to the Dark Pump by the way

welcome to the forum m8 another derv o well
petrol is the ftw

If I unlock the doors with the key (the remotes not working at the moment!) the alarm sounds if I open any of the other 3 doors and also the boot lid! As soon as I turn key in ignition so as all dash lights come on the doors are safe to open!

have you tried the process in the link above?? ^^^^^^

Ok cool will get it looked at, dont suppose anyone has any idea of whats involved in one of these in terms of money to replace?

Approx £80 for the module, possibly more plus fitting on top - about an hour and a half

ay - i'd get a few quotes for the job as it involves removing the metal door panel behind the door card which is riveted on
i think Rich paid £200 for the job at VW :undecided:
-
Ouch at £200 but if it sorts the problem then I would be a happy man!! Probably a stupid question but would it just be the module on the drivers door that would be the issue?

why dont you have a go at doin it yourself if it fooks up then go the garage thats what i do you learn alot about your car then.

sadly not - could be any of them! get it scanned first as that will at least pinpoint your problem

its not actually riveted onto the door mate i thought this untill i started to take it apart as my window fell into the door... the rivets only hold the window mechanism to the panel... it took me about 10 mins to completely strip the door down... easy to do

yep fair point on getting it scanned, I will get it done in the week sometime, I would be happy to have a go at doing it myself once I find out if it is this part!

well popped into local garage today to book golf in for service and cambelt !! Whilst I was there got them to plug it in and check for faults but nothing showed up any where! So no further forward with the remote not working issue! Have also found that when I go to car in the morning and turn key in ignition there isnothing a all there but if I leave it turned aftera few seconds the engine turns over and starts  once its started for the first time it is fine, even after sat at work for 6 hours today it started first time when I left, any idea on this?! I hope I have not bought adodgyone as I really love the car!!

Hello all
Just thought I would post a quick update, had the cambelt and 90k service done on Friday and also mentioned the noise from the steering which I mentioned in the original post, they looked into it and found the pulley on the alternator belt was completely seized, aparantly it should act like a ratchet! They replaced this and it is fine now, they also showed me the cambelt they removed and it was completely knackered, full of splits and very perished so am glad I had it done straight away!
-
ah good stuff mate - glad you got it sorted :afro:
also it sounds you were bloody lucky on the cambelt front!!
-
yes indeed! Cant believe the previous owner didnt get it done, is a bit odd as he had serive done every 10k religiously, I have all receipts too! Never mind, I am glad it was in need of changing, doesnt make the money spent seem so bad lol!
