I expect we're all used to the demonstration of ignorance that starts with a passenger commenting 'yeuch, it's an automatic, I thought this was a sporty car' - but what I heard today topped it all:
'Oh, it has gears like my smart car......'
So, what's the worst (and least intelligent) insult that your car has received?
-
'Is it fast?'
-
''You spent 20grand on a golf!!'' or the other
''Cant believe you spent 20grand on a car?'' or
''The more gadgets you get on a car the more it will go wrong!''
..........Grrrrrr
-
I find the GTI is one of those cars that people love and respect. Only negatives I hear are from skoda/seat crew who start with, "i didnt buy the golf because" and then basically beat around the fact that it was more expensive
-
"I don't like that you colour coordinated the bodykit"
"FFS you dumb idiot....it's standard on the ED30"
"What's an ED30?"
Wife's friends hubby, trying to act intelligent!
-
It's the first car I have ever owned that has never provoked an insult.
I can't think of any other car on Earth that could do that.
-

Anyone else feel embarrassed for that cringe worthy statement. Its like watching the crap singers on xfactor fail :undecided:
-
The GTI seems pretty immune from insults, but this thread reminds me when I used to own a Alfa 156 a bloke said to me that he didn't like the offset number plate "you would have thought they could have put it in the middle".
Actually didn't Tiff say how he hated the GTIs retro seats, that was one of the main reasons I bought the car in the first place.
-
Its a diesel then?
Me: No... its petrol (you idiot).
Really?! Are you sure its petrol?
Me: (Icy Stare) Well I've been putting petrol in the tank for the past 30k miles without a problem?! (WTF is this guy on!)

-
No-one's knocked my GTI yet, the insults are normally like "they're paying you too much if you can afford that" or "who did you steal that from"
Jealousy is a terrible thing :)
-
The mk5 GTI genuinely is one of those cars that attracts very little negative comment and is generally respected by almost all. The only negative comments I've ever heard are that they are 'too common' or 'everybody has a GTI'. Well, where I come from certainly not everybody has one but they are quite popular because they are such a good all rounder.
They're not cheap but as the beer advert says ''Refreshingly expensive''
-
The other night funny enough when parking up in a car park some bloke asked me if mine was I quote "one of them GT diesel things" :o ! or a GTI . . . . . Oh dear . . . . .
-
"Your exhaust is a bit loud, is it broken?"
-
"You could have got a Merc or a BMW for the same amount of money"
-
"why didnt you go for the 170 diesel? its just as quick & you get 60mpg!"
-

As you are the owner of an old fashoned V6 petrol glugging 4WD you just can't understand, that's all.
Should have bought a GTI methinks.

-
I don't really get any insults about the GTI, though I did have the p!ss taken out of me at the JKM RR day - because I removed the red piping from the grille.
But I do get some occasional snidy comments about my RS4 though - basically they seem to be the 'jealous' types of comments. Well fcuk-em!

GTI'ers never get asked that. It's the great big silver hooter on R32's that puzzle people.
Most normal people think R32s are Nissans.

They dont advertise the R32 thats why pal.
Nissan???? there was a nissan called the R32 maybe thats why
-
I did suspect that no one would insult your GTi egbert... its far easier to insult you
-
When I first bought my Gti, some of my friends didn't even ask me what it was like or care! Jealous cnuts!
They just turned there nose up at it!

You're amusingly easy to wind up

Why do people do that though?
i mean what is it with a BMW or Merc? Why do they say - You could have got a BMW instead?!!
Fair enough, they are seen as more luxury cars, but for the same price you'd get a less powerful car, probably with less options. I guess people just look at the shell, and the badge!!

When I get that comment, I just bluntly say - BMWs/Mercs are sh1t    Then I qualify my statement by saying for the price bracket, there's nothing that compares to the GTI and you'd have to spend in excess of £40k to get something apporaching better. I've convinced quite a few people though when they come for a ride in the car
-
But illyun, for the amount of money you have spent modding the MK5 you could have bought a BMW :D
-
Badge snobbery! obviously i dont drive a GTI but the only time ive fallen victinm to the bullying of a car insult was when i got my LCR.
Pleased as punch i took it to the pub to show my mates, and some old coot came out an said......'couldnt afford the golf then?'
Then i remembered he drives a Diesel Focus and felt alot better
Cant wait to get a ED30 and get insulted, my standard reply will be......'Yeah, not yours though is it?'
-
Pleased as punch i took it to the pub to show my mates, and some old coot came out an said......'couldnt afford the golf then?'
LOL ! :D I've used that before on my mates LCR !! haha !

I think every owner of an LCR has had that said to them
-
Although on the flip side my brother in law kept giving me stick when I got the GTI because the LCR comes with the 230bhp KO4 lump from the ED30 and kept going on that should have got that blah blah blah, funny how he hasn't said anything since the mods . . . .
-
Some little squirt at work made the comment:
"Golf GTis are normally bought by 40 year old men trying to look cool".
This coming from a 22 year old who really does think he is cool driving a Citroen Saxo VTR, and i'm not even 40.
-
Someone in a Saxo VTR making a snidy comment about a MK5 GTI . . brilliant. Hope you told him to jog on
-
But illyun, for the amount of money you have spent modding the MK5 you could have bought a BMW :D
I know I get that too.... but I love VWs and DON'T like BMWs and yes I have driven them before. But I'd like to see the M3 on a 1/4 mile stretch against a modded Ed30 - no faster methinks... The only car I'd consider beyond my Golf GTI is the Nissan GT-R (if they sort them transmission issues out) and a Porsche 911  When I spent £20k on my wife's R32 last December, I could have got plenty of other performance manchines with that money but still chose a Golf
-
Recently one of the guys I work with decided he wanted to buy an additional car that was more for him (rather than taking into consideration the needs of his family), something he could have a bit of fun in. So I suggested we go and test drive a Pirelli or R32, to which I got the reply; "but it's just a Golf isn't it, I don't want a VW". I was slightly surprised when he turned up one day in a used 136bhp diesel powered Audi A6 Avant. I personally can't think of anything quite so boring.
So I took him for a ride in my GTi, and ever since he has been looking into remaps for the A6. I don't have the heart to tell him he ain't going to get the performance of a GTi no matter what he does!
-
When I first bought my Gti, some of my friends didn't even ask me what it was like or care! Jealous cnuts!

ditto
-
Only praise for the GTI .
The gearbox is a thing of wonder.
The only negative comments were regarding VW products in general (from VW owners); the thin soft paint, the shoddy attention to corrosion and the poor reliability record. All of which I agree with.
Still don't know of a car that gets less jokes, snide remarks and insults than the GTI.
To other Mk5'ers I ask "Why didn't you buy the GTI?"
Yet to hear a good reason other than poverty.
-
Poor reliability record?????!!!?
-
Poor reliability record?????!!!?
I think the real problem is with the lack of competence by some of the VW stealers. They are often known in sending a car out with more faults than when it went in.

It was easier when the mk5 hadnt come out, with mk4s used to be able to say, yeah, 225bhp....golf.....180 max!
-

I had this response, but just know that their silence speaks more than anything! Unfortunately however, they are usually not so silent about ur owning a gti when you are not in their presence! but o wel jealousy is food to a gti owner!
-
I responded to a post on another forum, some guy asking opinions on hot hatches so I gave my thoughts on the GTI.
Got a response from another member to say he hated his GTI DSG as it just wasn't that special. Not really an insult as such, but I find the guys on that forum in particular to be very anti GTI, even though it's a VAG forum. Probably a combo of snobbery and ignorance.

Yep  had a golf, not fast enough, swapped for the LCR
+ the mk4 (first) GTI was pants looking out the box

Probably UK-MKIV's (or MKV's, or MKVI's or whatever it's called this week)

That's my answer anyway
-
It was the TT forum. I quite like it over there for a bit of something different but some of them really don't like their Golfs!!
-
Its because they don't want to admit they have a posh Golf.
One of my ex's dads had a TT and hated it whenever I said it was based on a MK4.
-
When the TT came out it was unsafe at any speed.
They would fly off corners due to a very unpredictable 4WD system.
A Golf for billy no mates.
-
It was nothing to do with the 4wd, it was poor rear suspension geometry accentuating lift-off oversteer, which was resolved by recall, and bad aerodynamics at high speeds which is why they added a spoiler after 2000.
A Golf for hairdressers is more accurate.
-
Needed to buy a larger car and was looking at various 5 door cars for a few months following the birth of my daughter. I eventually decided on a nearly new 5 door GTi which was absolutely superb to drive and ticked all the boxes as far as space and performance was concerned..Here are some comments made by some work colleagues coupled with what they drive :
"you paid how much!" - drives an Aygo
"not very practical. What if you have another kid" - drives a 4 year old Mondeo Estate with roofbox
"expensive to run, and sh!t mpg. Insurance is far too much for me" - drives a Pug 307Di
"you've got more money than sense" - Rides GSXR750, BMW1100S and drives a Megane conv 08 ?
"yeah..(long pause)..i would have gone for a LCR in white instead i mean, thats a golf anyway" - Drives a 5 year old Vectra
Only one person has said "nice car" and he rides a Yamaha R1
I guess envy is a wonderful thing !

The classic Drug dealers car....
-
Isnt the classic Drug Dealers car a BMW - either the M3 or the X5??
lol ;)
-
I thought the problem the TT had when it came out was that it was missing the rear wing which is why they had the recall to add it . . .

^^^^ x2.
They basically didn't quite get the original TT rear end to work with the different areodynamic profile generated from a sleek low coupe - when the orginal Golf Mk4 rear suspension was primarily designed for the aero profile of a hatchback. And the other issue was that Audi didn't think it would actually get driven like a 'sports car'.

Carefull . . . Cass has an Aygo for his SWMBO.

The rear wing is just the 'visible' thing. They had to modify the rear suspension too.

"People who buy Peugeots these days know nothing about cars"

For new golfs
All that technology is good.... until it goes wrong.
and for old golfs
I bet you spend a lot of time in the garage.

What's an LCR?
-
Leon Cupra R
-
Leon Cupra R
Thank you Andrew.
Last month I booked a Ford Focus hire car for half term in Spain.
They gave me a Seat Leon instead (diesel manual).
It's obviously based on a Golf but I found every single detail to be inferior.
Not a car I would like to own.

When I bought mine I got questioned why I chose white, why I specced a sunroof because nobody has a sunroof these days (from someone that owns a TT!) and why I bought a brand new one because I would lose so much in depreciation.
I also get asked how much I paid for it (which I think is rude because they're not interested in buying one, just nosey), how much the insurance is and get told that I must get paid too much.

Same here with my mates. Felt a bit awkward tbh
Great for the birds tho, even they know what a GTI is :D
-
Took a friends mate for a spin in mine and she was making little noises everytime I put my foot down. Shes abit of a petrolhead. Didnt even have to touch her
Another compliment was from a manager at work, he told me to stop parking next to him because I am making him look like a kunt.
He had a Proton at the time.

I find the GTI is one of those cars that people love and respect. Only negatives I hear are from skoda/seat crew who start with, "i didnt buy the golf because" and then basically beat around the fact that it was more expensive
i got the octavia vrs over a standard gti cause its a better car , drives better , handles better , every thing only when the ed30 came out i decided to change !

I'll be intrigued as to what comments I get, as I haven't got mine yet. But those I've told, I've received nothing but compliments.
My current Audi S4, well, that's a different matter. Boring, turbo-charged armchair blah blah blah...... all shut up when we go for a spin..... and it tears their face off with the torque. Several have gone very quiet during mid-conversation!!LOL!!!
My last car - a modded Scooby. I had everything. Spitting on the car was probably the worst :( Never had any vandalism though :)
One girl said to me at our first introduction at work, "Oh, YOUR the one with the loud and noisy car"!!!
One Impreza with Full-Decat  I used to fire it up and it SHOOK the windows at work!!! My work colleagues always knew when I was coming or going!!! Not always a good thing!! LOL. My mate has a race can on his Bandit. Always showing off when he starts it up. Until I started up the Scoob
Hey ho!!!
The Golf will have a Miltek ;)
Dan :D

....Brilliant reply!! :afro:  :afro:

....A "better" car is it? Better for you certainly but IMO the Octavia's styling is cr@p and looks cheap and dated. I know it's overall a good car and good value for money if that's an important factor.
-
i test drove about 5 mk 5 gti s and imo the octavia does most things better !i agree the looks are not on par with the golf but thats down to taste
(http://)(http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n374/candyturbo_2008/DSCF0378.jpg)
but i may be a little bias as i came from a very fast mk 1 octavia !

^^^^
Let's assume for a moment that the Octavia does most things better than the GTI (and perhaps it does) - I still wouldn't even consider it. Which only goes to prove that choosing a car is such an irrational process (or that I'm a badge snob).
It's like that first millisecond when you meet a girl for the first time - You know instantly if you fancy her or not, and you may not even know why.
:afro:
P.S.- Do you stalk Octavia drivers in your white van too?
-
i think it is badge snobbery with a lot of people , skoda s nowadays are brilliant cars , well built , with mostly audi parts and the vrs models drive and handle top class the dealers and skoda customer service put vw s to shame , red if you get chance go test drive a vrs octavia and i m sure you ll agree with me !my other halfs re mapped fabia vrs is a belter too

....
I've no doubt you are right but I don't actually like saloon cars - Not even an Audi RS4 unless it was an Avant. Hot hatchbacks, fast 2-door coupes and sports, are what float my boat. I just don't like the Skoda styling.
A friend of mine is modifying a Fabia VRS at the moment with APS. But I'd rather have a modded Lupo GTI or Fiat Abarth.

I agree Red on all counts. The VRS is a good value car but its cheap for a reason. I read direct comparisons when the octavia vrs was released and it has different suspension components and a different steering setup. It does not drive as nicely as the GTI and is has a lower quality interior and feel, every professional review has concluded the same. I would recommend the skoda to my dad but i think thats because its target market is the older generation. I'd have no problems driving the skoda for me, but of if i was looking at the similar vag products it would go;
Golf GTI
Audi A3 tfsi
Leon cupra
Octavia Vrs
in that order

I used to have a few SEATs and thought I was getting a VW without the badge.
When I went looking for my next car, I went through the same process, test drove the Leon and the Octy, but the Golf stood out as the better car for me, in so many ways (besides the Leon is fugly and the Octy is too long to park in my street)
Skoda are on par with VW and Audi in terms of build quality, SEAT definately aren't.
The directors of VAG wanted there to be subtle differences between their brands, and if you go through ETKA and compare parts, you see the different brands now get different quality parts. Some may not even notice, but they shone through on the GTI test drive.

dont get me wrong here guys a moddified gti will probably out drive the skoda but out the box the octavia is a better drivers car !
and red i prefere the look of a smaller hatchback too but the rs 4 is my dream

Interesting this - gotta be careful this doesn't transgress into an out and out flame war!!!LOL!!
Whilst looking for my next brumbrum, I initially did a back-to-back from an Audi S3 to a Golf GTi. (by this time, the RS4 prices were going nuts and I'll now wait and see ;) )
The Audi IS better put together with a higher quality feel. It is also quicker in a straight line. It is also very sure-footed due to the Quattro system (coming from my S4 quattro, this was reassuring). However, it IS devoid of "feel", dare I say, "boring", and expensive.
The Golf is slightly less of a quality product, only 2wd in comparison (no R32 here), BUT handles much better and is fun to drive. As in an absolute HOOT!!!
The clincher for me was simple - the increase in quality/outlay for the Audi isn't justifiable when put up against the Golf. The difference isn't worth nearly £10K.
Hence my decision to go VW.
I did look at the Leon Cupra. Don't like the interior on the new one - VERY put off by the dealers :(
I looked at the VRS (there's also one that every day tries to "play" on my drive to work - I've got bored of handing him his a$$, so now change my leaving time and route just to avoid him) - a nice car, but whilst the quality is streets ahead of Skodas of old (a VERY good thing), I'm under no illusion that it is the "entry-level" to the VAG group.
Don't get me wrong, a well-put together car, as you would expect I(hope ;) ) from VAG, but there IS just that lack of quality. And NOTHING to do with badge snobbery.
So my order (from top to bottom) would be:-
Audi, VW, Seat & Skoda
All IMHO, of course ;)

oh... i could spend all afternoon here amongst your fragile egos.

have you ever driven an octavia vrs ????????????????
....I hope to drive my friend's modded Fabia VRS when it's ready in the next few months.
Otherwise I've only been passenger for a short trip in a Stage2 modded Octavia but although I was impressed by the performance I wouldn't buy one for the reasons already stated.

Although I must concede the octavia vrs is amazing value for money. Just saw a red 56 plate at my local Honda dealer for £6995. Wow, didn't realize they could be got that cheap and that's before the bargaining starts

See if you can negotiate one of these to be included  : -

can you please tell me on the latest octavia where any of the build quality is not as good as any mk 5 golf on the road ?????????????????????
-
I've been a passenger in a few skoda's and have to say that I haven't noticed any difference in build quality with vw. Was in an octy taxi and noticed that the switches / dials were lifted straight out of a golf mk4 / passat of the same vintage but with green back lights.
Seat is a different story....

It'll still be there next month.
They might come out of the factory OK but Skoda owners don't look after their cars, skipping services to save save money.
This makes secondhand Skodas a poor bet.

IMHO I found the general level of creaks and groans to be more prevalent in the Skoda. I wasn't as keen on the seats (nor the styling tbh) until I saw the flyer for the Vrs ltd....
The dash and centre console looked cheap.
You might think it's fabulous - no worries, but to me (and let's be honest, unless anybody else is buying the car for me, MY opinion is the one that counts!! ) it didn't feel as good.
Image-wise, the looks are really good - I like the stocky stance. But as I'll be spending most of my time IN it, the outside doesn't overly matter too much!! ;)
Dan :)

i did nt think it was that good or i would nt have swapped it for my ed 30 , i had the ed 30 more for the exclusivity imo the last octavia i had (06 reg )had the same build quality as my ed 30 not quite as good as my mates s3 i m not into comparing value BUT i had to put £10 k with my vrs to get the ed 30 !!!!!

Very good reply, sharpie!

How do you guys comment back on a typical "wow you spent that much on a Golf" ??
lol

Simply ask what they drive. If they are having a pop at you spending money on a Golf chances are they probably drive a French piece of sh!t.
