Hi Guys,
Its been a while :P
My car needs new brakes so I thought it was time to upgrade them.
I want 312mm with red callipers.
Can someone please assist me with a shopping list please?
I just have the standard brakes at the mo and my mechanic said he would fit the new ones if I supplied everything.
Thanks in advance.

think there is some infoon that in the maintenance section mate :)
-
Thanks I did find this http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=87778.0
But A) got confused and B) wondered if there were places like eBay to get the kit from (or is it not worth it) as the link was dead.
What would be ideal is:
1) Item 1 - Link - Price
2) Item 2 - Link - Price
It might sound lazy i just don't know what i need and want to get it right first time :)
Thanks,
CS

You need differant caliper carriers and a set of 312mm disc's.
I found it easier (although more expensive) to buy new calipers too. This way i could paint them off the car and then change them all over at once, rather than mess around cleaning up and painting the existing calipers on the car. There normally grotty and you can't get as good a finish. Had to do this with my rear's and it was a PITA.
I sprayed my front's with plastikote red.

I managed to get a set off disks for £25 off ebay, and some carriers for £70 so very very cheap upgrade. If you shop around for the 312mm it is a good set up, as the GTI not overly heavy in 1.8t mode 1236kg off the top off my head.
Not been left wanting so far in the brake department since the upgrade.
-
So for my car i need:
Brake Pads
312mm Disks
Callipers (Would like red ones)
Carriers?
Am I missing anything and anyone got any links to assist?
Thanks,
CS
-
you dont really need the calipers you can easily clean the old ones!

have a look on ebay or your local breakers.
Just paint your calipers red and save hundreds :afro:
-
Got my carriers from vw speed about 155pounds used own calipers, disc 70, pads 40 ,easy to fit yorself I find it hard changing a plug but so much info on this ,cant stress how easy it is. good luck
-
Don't know if people are aware but the TT shop sell new carriers, about £140 each
Also sell pairs of second-hand ones when they have them for £100. I know thats still expensive, but if struggling to lay your hands on some. Come back Vag-parts...

Ah well that's ok as i have my eye on these : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/18-audi-vw-new-r32-alloy-wheels-fits-golf-a3-a4-skoda_W0QQitemZ300270463970QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarParts_Acc_Wheels_tyres_Trims_Car_Rims_ET?hash=item300270463970&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1 but dont tell the misses ;)
Will the brake upgrade be OK till I get these then with my standard wheel's?
Cheers,
CS
-
As long as they're 16" & not the BBS RX II, then they should be fine. ;)
-
OK slowly getting there.
I found these today - http://tinyurl.com/bke88l
Are they ok?
So that's carriers and callipers and pads and disks on my other post.
What am I missing?
Thanks,
CS

Looking at the advert you still have to pay extra for painting. Why not just take the time to take yours off and clean and paint them yourself, as Steve_PD suggested. If you have the time you could hang them from the springs with wire amd paint them or spray them so there is no strain on the brake pipes
-
Thanks - I'm not a painter nor do I have the patience/time - Lazy I know, but I'd rather pay a bit extra for someone else to do it :)

Cool so no spacers or anything - right them - make it £230 all in (+ fitting and fluid etc)
Thanks guys,

Do I need anything else?
Thanks,
CS

you need 312mm pads too
-
you need 312mm pads too
pads are the same size, but you would need discs at which point you need new pads
-
pads covered the whole of the 312mm disc when I got them, can't see them being the same size or they'd clash with the centre...
edit: you may be right looking at this

same breaking 'surface' just further away from the centre of the disc.

i will happily admit defeat on that one

Just had a look in the maintenance sect.... it says that the 2.0 8v needs the hub changing & the 1.8 turbo doesnt.... what about the 1.8 20v n/a? does any one know?

i believe you don't need to change the hubs on the 1.8 n/a
one way to be sure is to measure the size of the disc - if its 288mm you're in luck
-
am almost certain it isnt.....280 i thinks!!
-
No mention of the 2.0 16v GTi anywhere or have i over looked the info in the posted links?
I have 288mm, so would that be the same?
Just need the carriers, discs and pads and away we go?

The only thing you've overlooked is the Mk3 section!!! :P :D
There was never a (UK) 2.0 16v Mk4. ;)

IIRC, the 125 has the 280's, so will need the hubs changing. :(

Shame I just missed this thread . . .
I've a complete 312mm set up just taken from my Audi TT 225.
Mintex disks and pads have done 9k miles and have 25mm and 11mm thickness (so hardly worn).
Complete with carriers, calipers and hoses.
I cleaned them up and hammerited them black - but you could easily repaint if you wanted.
Looking for £175 the lot. 01458 860765 - Glastonbury
