Out of interest, what kind of price is the cam coming in at?
You should throw the 2.0l bottom end on to really ramp up your torque.
-
hi ben the kent cam kit is £287 comes with cam/followers/timing disc/ the power pully is £95
the piper is £415 all in
-
Whoah, that's a whole lotta money for some relatively small gains, I always though cam's were only about £100.
-
yer thats what i thought you can get cams 4 that money but been told you need cam followers wich are £125 and then the pully wich is £100
it says i will gain 15bhp
-
You'd be better off (money, power and torque wise) by fitting the 2.0 bottom end (2E, AGG, ABA, 3a, AWG, AWF) and get about the same power increase, but oodles more torque for much less money (if you can DIY that is).
-
sounds like a big job and i dont think i could take it on where as the cam should b quite easy but i will look into it thanks ben
if anyone is near west sussex and could do the bottom end 4 around £400 let me know also some more help on the cam kit would b great
-
Well, cams are a doddle to fit. It takes about 10 minutes to get the belts off and mark up. About 5 minutes to remove the rocker cover. Then about 5 minutes to crack off the cam bearing caps.
The only trick is getting the timing right on a new cam.
Whereas a bottom end is a bit more hard work. You'd need to drain the oil and coolant, remove the belts, alternator, PAS pump, water pump, water hoses, starter motor, gearbox, then crack the head off, replace the head gasket and bolts, new oil and filter with new block and a fresh batch of coolant.
The coolant, oil filter, oil, head set would set you back about £40-50. You'd need the TSR spacer for the dizzy though, not sure on price. The blocks can be picked up cheeeeep, usually <£100. The work itself isn't hard - as long as you have the tools. The knowledge you gain from doing it is invaluable though!
I'd throw the £400 at a decent socket set, £100, a decent torque wrench, £40, a new clutch, £60 and the block and bits from the above. You'd come in under budget with more power and a decent sense of satisfaction ;)
-
Bottom end before cam, all day long.
Plus you're going to see a lot more gains if you put the cam in a ported head, too.
-
thanks 4 the advice but im still going to get the cam kit because i can do it myself quick and when the head gasket goes i will get the bottom end sorted but can anyone tell me wich cam is best 4 mk2 gti 8v thanks jason
-
headgasket could take another 100k miles to go.....save your money, be wise and do the 2l bottom end now. you will see a much much bigger gain from a 2l bottom end rather than a cam.
-
can choice is personal preferance at end of day, bigger engines won't go as lumpy so can have bumpyer cam. 266 deg cams are pritty tame a bit to tame imo but due to dailyness a 285 may be a bit much so 272 276 deg shoudl be optimal
-
thats great danny so you think a 266 cam wont b as good as there sports R 270 i want it still to run nice as it is my daily anyone elses input would b greatfull thanks
-
put linky up so can have look at specs of it
the degrees is only a very rough guide, and manuacturess are rather flexibe with when they start measureing. 266 and 270 can happily mean the same thing, so can 272 276 and 277. there is no offical point you star measureing, i think a 27- would work well for you.
a 266 like the kent gs2h you don't even notice is there but the engine will rev a bit more freely. 27- has a bit more of a cammed feel but dosent cause any issues
-
newman 268 or 272.both circa £150 from pw motorsport. my 268 is just about spot on. picks up nice and early and revs cleanly to 6k
-
thanks paul will get the newman 268 then also i wont need vanier pully wich saves me money but can any one tell me do i still need new cam followers wich ones and where to get them thanks

So the 2.0 bottom end gives gains of about 15bhp?
-
ope your all taking into account changes to insurnace and the costs!
-
no do thay have to know
-
I'm going for Kent GS2h cam and ported head in the summer I think :)
Spoke to Kent at Autosport, they seemed very clued up and a reputable company
Adjustable vernier too for a bit of tinkerage :)
-
yer i was going to get the kent cam wats the lift on that one
-
276 or 278 i think
Not 100% sure mate :)
-
I have the Kent GS2H cam in mine. Seems to give a nice extra pull. A performance magazine did a review on cams and said the Kent GS2H gave the best results.
Edit: Here's some specs:
Application Power Band Cam Lift(mm) Valve Lift(mm) Duration Timing Full Lift VC (mm) LTDC
Sports ' R ' 2000-6500 11.32 11.32 270 Deg 25/65 65/25 110 Deg 0.00 I 1.55mm
-
yer would pref that cam but cost alot more than the newman as you need the vanier pully
-
I don't have the vernier pulley with mine.
-
wasnt getting the timming right a pain and also did you replace the followers evil
-
Timing was easy enough to do (said my VW specialist mechanic anyway).
I didn't replace the followers or anthing else for that matter. Has run fine for the few years it's been fitted anyway.
-
ok evil will look into it
-
din't by chance buy that cam from the pvw forum ? ages ago
vernier dose help a littel, some cams are cut off from original for marketing pourposes. or if have head skimms ect can slightly affect timeing
-

I bought the cam off Ebay a few years ago after first getting the Golf.
-
jusr rember selling my old kent gs2h to someone on there a few years ago and iirc it ended up in a car that looks very simalar to yours
-
Ive got a Newman Shrik cam on my MK1 8v, I think its 276/268 deg with light wait followers. it idles great not loumpy at all...
you really notice a difference around 5000rpm it picks up loads.
The only thing ive noticed is the oil runs a little warmer around 110c, if im really pushing it upto 116deg.
but the water stays cool.... any thoughts on that dubs ??? :undecided:
-
The oil temp will always be far higher than water, by about 30 degs or so. I wouldn't give it any grave concern.
As long as you stay under 130 you'll be fine ;)
-
i have gone 4 the newman 268 it will b here monday i have also ordered a red powdercoated rocker cover/crome oil cap/cambelt/rocker cover gasket/ cant wait to fit it all didnt bother with follower will wait till there nackerd will post pics next weekend when i fit it
-
good choice there mate
-
yer thanks paultownsend got it from pw motorsport there very helpfull
-
110-120 is fine for oil temp a lot of tweeked motors ive had have liked to run at those temps
-
phill walker seems an honest chap. the 268 is the best compromise for a std 1.8. on my 2.0, i want to go for the 272 if one comes available
-
let us know how she runs when its fitted, ive been thinking about camming my 8v aswell
-
yes will do fitting it sat
-
You gonna take it to a rolling road to find out BHP?
-
fitted cam today running nice will post pics tommorow
-
How much faster does it feel?
-
not massively faster but more instant
-
just out of interest. will this cam fit into a 1.8 8v driver?
-
not sure but the camshaft that i took out would make a diffrence to yours my mate put a gti cam in his driver
-

Yes.
Drivers have smaller valves though - you need to fit a GTI head to it.
-

Good job.
-
top work, but there is something ive always wanted to know. how do you know which angle of rotation to put the cam in?
-
The cam gear will only go onto the cam in one place via the woodruff key.
If you marked up the cam gear beforehand, then it just drops back into the same place.
