Title: Flywheel gone boom!!!
Post by: pany on 03 March 2009, 15:25
Just thought I would let you know about a problem I've had, as I have seen the initial symptoms mentioned on these forums before.

My july 07 GTI with 72k miles on the clock has just killed it's flywheel. The effect was a very juddery idle with massive feedback coming through the pedal box and the car sounding like a tractor.

I mention it on the forum as I have previously had, on about 4 occasions, problems with the car sounding like a tractor when I started it. If I then turned the car off and restarted it, everything was fine.

Iirc in the posts it was just thought to be an intermittent problem and something to do with the crankcase needing to be pressurised in the TSI engine.

I could be wrong and the two events may not be related in any way, it just occurs to me that the judder and the noise made by the car were the same in both cases.

My engine isn't modded in any way, so it should be okay. But I thought I would put this up as a warning if anyone is getting problems with the car on starting, it might be worth getting the garage to give it a looking over.

That's some serious milage in 20 months.  Your car just probably just wants a rest!   Hope it is fixed soon, under warranty.

Seems usual now that high milers need new dual mass flywheels these days, my last Peugeot 407 with gilactic miles done exactly the same.

....Out curiosity, what do you call a high-miler, Phil? How many per year?

Out of interest, what sort of money would you be looking at for a replacement flywheel?

Don't know Dan. I am lucky enough that it is a company car. I just dropped it off and pick it up again fixed. ironically it was going in for a service on friday

My Peugeot 407 had 85k in 18 months!!. They say average mileage a year is circa 12k.

....

I've been doing about 18k a year in the GTI. Barely 40 miles last week but gonna be well over 400 by Sunday.

But I was more interested in what levels of mileage might get into 'flywheel-gone-boom' territory.

Wonder if this is a weak point in Vw's as the dual mass fly wheel went on my mums Passat @ 32k miles, AA guy also said you'd be surprised how often this happens to newer cars

According to the garage the flywheel has pushed against the engine, bending the crank and moving the pistons, cams etc forward.

It is now going to need a completely new engine. They are covering it under warranty though, which is a relief. Thank god I avoided the temptation and didn't get it REVO'd.
Title: Re: Flywheel gone boom!!!
Post by: RedRobin on 04 March 2009, 18:30
....

Well, not getting Revo'd may lessen your worries but would it have been viewed as a direct cause of the flywheel failure?

An academic question now, and one which you wouldn't want to pioneer!

now youve got me scared again my 2006 gti with 40k on it sounds a little rough like a tappy diesel or tractor etc but have posted on here about it and seems to be common in the gti even took it to the stealers under warranty and foreman say he think its fine but im not so sure now afterall he never seemed to no anything that i asked him anyway he couldnt even tell me if it was chain or belt driven lol

Not a tempting option. Plus fleet manager would have been even more unhappy than when it was discovered I had fitted cruise and armrest and ipod without approval. Whoops

Not quite ready yet, but glad VW covered it.

Costs seem to be;

Engine 2.5K
Flywheel assembly 1.4k
So far 30hrs @£78 per hour.

Ouch!!!

£1400 for a new flywheel!??    i'd hope to god that includes a new clutch!! Otherwise its going to be hugely expensive come replacement time for a lot of GTI owners!!

and 30 hours to swap an engine out??  My mates Dave and Bob removed two engines and put the new one in roughly two days!

Good job you're not paying lol

flywheel is £550 ish clutch about £250 ish so £1400 is abit steep

£1400 !!!!!!, you could buy a derv Mk4 for that!! :lipsrsealed:

I think the dealers are trying to pay off their outstanding Parts bill to Vw by submitting a Warranty claim to clear their own debt!

truely shocking.

I think they said one of the main bearing was in bits as well. That could be included in the price.

I guess it's one of those areas where they can charge what they like, I guess it would be hard to find another source. Can't be that many in scrappers.

only an accident damaged one and even that will produce less smoke than an ED30  :lipsrsealed:

Nope.  Neither of them like football and don't drink much either.  They just happen to have some clue rather than none about what they're doing

bigger isn't always better  but we digress

they will only get cost plus whatever % agreed (normally between 10% and 30%) so can't really see how they are fudging the figures unless they are replacing the clutch when it doesn't need it but i for one would want it replaced for peace of mind

And................

The car goes back to the garage for a few more days.

More vibrations, they reckon an engine mount has died. Probably in refitting the engine, as they had to put a new rad in as well.

is yours a manual? had something similar diagnosed on my motor, although another dealer has told me its impossible as the DSG  does not use a flywheel. Help!

Hi Mark W,

Mine is the manual, yes. I hope to god it isn't the same problem for you. I was lucky and the garage replaced most of the engine under warranty...

Awesome I love the troubleshooting in dealers now, new engines given out like oil changes, and can't plug a laptop into my socket set so I'm unsure. What happened to actual mechanics and knowledge?

That isn't accurate at all to be fair. They stripped the engine down and discovered that all of what was replaced was trashed, as I mentioned earlier in the post if you had read through it all.

I have read it all, it's just my take on modern car dealerships, not just your case :)

either way, one of em is wrong, and its very easy to believe the dealer that told me the 'noisy flywheel' was actually a noisy fuel pump.

The £1000 i save getting the fuel pump replaced won't be much consolation when the flywheel bursts and leaves me in a similar predicament to Pany but without warranty!

Hi Pany,

When you day you were feeling a lot of feedback through the pedals was it fairly extreme? At about 80mph/3k revs i can feel a small vibration through the whole car and if i put some very light pressure on the clutch it feels quite 'lumpy', i know what you're thinking, could be the wheels but i had them all rebalanced and should be fine.

Having never put a little pressure on the clutch whilst moving, it may be completely normal to feel a little lumpy, so not really sure. As for sounding like a tractor i have always though the GTi sounds a bit rough and mine doesnt seem to have changed,

Did yours feel lumpy when actually driving too? and how long was it from noticing the symptoms until it went Bang?

Thanks,

Ri

Hi guys excuse my forum skills but only new to this. I have my Gti for about a month now and i've noticed as it ticks over it tends to give a faint shudder every 5-10 secs. Just wondering is this the same problem you experienced when your flywheel went boom or has anyone any suggections. Any would greatly be appreciated

Hi rskardon,

The pedal feedback was huge. Like the ABS feedback but through all pedals. As a follow up, the garage seems to have damaged the engine mounts when reinstalling the engine, the pedal sensations were very similar to those you describe, but the engine not had also changed. Really difficult to describe how, it just sounded wrong. These are now getting replaced as is the cambelt, the shifting engine had marked the cambelt. All under warranty thank god.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi PaddyWagon,

Can't help I'm afraid, very different to my symptoms.

Hopefully one of the wise sages on here will be of more use than I am.

Think i posted earlier in this thread about having an advisory for a 'noisy flywheel' - basically took it to another dealer and they said the dual mass flywheel is bathed in oil so wouldn't be 'noisy', and if anything were to go wrong, it'd go big time. They checked it out thoroughly and ended up changing the fuel pump.
