hey guys ,,,
about to get a new car, dont know whether it should be a gti or r32, can some one give me specs on gti mpg, miles per tank, how many litres per tank. running cost etc
thanks guys.

Hi, everything you need to know is here - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=58.0
They're both brilliant cars. It's down to how much you can afford really. The R32 is more than twice the price of a 1.8T.

thanks mate
ill have a look

couldnt find info on thread mate.
can u list info for me

Me and my friends talk about this a lot.
The benifits of R32 are:
Different kits
Sound of the engine
little bit of speed increase
Downside
Expensive on fuel
More expensive to buy
insurance is higher
I always say that I would rather a 1.8 with a re-map with official R32 kits from VW as it can be quicker than a R32, possibly the same or cheaper fuel, cheaper insurance depending on how your with and looks just as nice.
It all boils down to wheather your a R32 enthusiast or not basically, because if your not then its probably better you go for the 1.8 with the kits and a remap.
Thats my 2 cents on it anyway.
-
which mark are we talking about??
MK4 or MK5??
-
I would go for a GTI in place of a R32.
-
mk5 ,, sorry if i wasnt specific...
whats the combined mpg of a mk5 gti...
and how many miles can i get on a gti per tank
-
i suggest searching through the MK5 section then

The padawan knows not the thin ice he treads on!!! Ask Phil Mc.
I would go for the R32 if I could EASILY afford it, i.e. you earn enough to not worry about the greater servicing & parts cost. You would be getting a luxury motor with awesome pace and four wheel drive for when its wet.
Realisitcally, I would get the GTI as its got 95% of the performance but is cheaper to run.
-
like said already, if money wasnt an issue an r3 would be bought, but as you seem to be keen to know mpg then the 1.8 would be the obvious choice, not much in it to be honest
-
1.8 gti?
i know im new but im sure the gti mk5 is a 2 litre or is that my mistake.

There was some confusion what Mk he was on about.
Mk4 GTI = 1.8T, Mk5 = 2.0T

is it realistic for a mk5 gti to return 35mpg and 350 miles to a tank.

Never mind the search function, do people not realise all these facts are on the Parkers website:
Mk5 GTI:
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=39762
0-60 mph 6.7 s
Power Output 197 bhp
Torque 280 Nm 207 lb-ft
Top Speed 145 mph
MPG 35
Insurance Group 17
Mk5 R32
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/specs/Detail.aspx?deriv=33015
0-60 mph 6.0 s
Power Output 246 bhp
Torque 320 Nm 236 lb-ft
Top Speed 154 mph
MPG 29
Insurance Group 18
So the GTI is 0.7 of a second slower to 60mph, top speed is 9mph slower and has less torque, but it's insurance group is lower and returns 6mpg more than the R32.
But you could go for an Edition 30 which has a more powerful 2.0 Turbo meaning;
0-60 mph 6.4 s
Power Output 226 bhp
Torque 300 Nm 221 lb-ft
Top Speed 151 mph
MPG 35
Insurance Group 18
Which means it's got almost the same top speed, and only 20bhp and 20Nm of torque less than the R32 and only 0.4s slower to 60mph, but 35mpg and it's lighter, but you don't get 4 wheel drive.
If the costs of the R32 are no object then go for that, but if you need better fuel efficiency and lower costs go for the GTI, which you can mod to make it just as powerful and look very similar to the R32.
The only thing missing would be 4wd and that V6 engine note.
So it's really a personal choice. I reckon that most people, if money wasn't an issue would have an R32.

yes, drive sensibly and you get more but if its mpg your looking at then dont bother going for an R32!
-
Those Parkers fuel consumption figures arn't very accurate, particularly for the R32, which is 26mpg, not 29.
-
thanks for the info guys,,,,,

ive been hearing that i would get 39 mpg and 300 miles per tank for an r32 mk5,,,,,, is this dreaming.

From what I've read that would be just about possible with careful driving on a mainly motorway journey.

Well if you drive it very, VERY carefully, on long motorway drives, then maybe. But that isnt really the 'spirt' of an R32. But when you start to give an R32 some beans, then its fuel consumption does get quite scary - whenever I have driven one, it can match my RS4 which is a 1.8 tonne 4.2 litre V8.
If economy really is a concern, then you really need to be looking at the GTI. The FSI really does give excellent fuel economy when driven carefully, and even when 'pressing on', doesn't drop no where near as bad as an R32 at similar pace. And because the exhaust note on the R32 is sooooo adictive, you will definately want to be pressing the loud pedal.

An R32 is 1600 kg - not far off!

155 kilos is still quite a weight difference - that is 2 and a bit adults (or 1 and a bit Chuffs     )

What is the bhp of the v8 in the rs4? i've got 300bhp on my ABZ lump, and thats an old unit.
I would of thought the rs4 would be way faster than an R32.
-
Quoted 414bhp.. pretty sure he meant it matched the fuel economy though, not speed. RS4 would dust an R32 quite easily.
Yes you can get decent mpg from the R32 if you drive everywhere like a granny. The other night I was VERY low on fuel and just crawled along behind a 1.2 corsa most of the 40 mile journey home.. I managed to average 34mpg. The R32 isn't really a car to be looking at if you're looking for fuel economy.. because it's far too much fun to drive it quick. Although if you plan to add things like a remap and exhaust to the GTI then the same applies, particularly with an Edition30 GTI with the larger turbo.
