Hi guys and girls,
Think my cars is getting the famous coilpack disease, its a 2001 1.8T AUM, the power delivery seems to be fine and it idles fine, just under accelearation i can hear a slight misfire when i put the windows down(does everyone agree this is most likely the coipacks), heard that theres a Hitachi version of these that are supposed to be quite good with low failure rate-is this true? or should i just get the most recent ones from VW ?
Any help would be appreciated.

I doubt your problem is the coil pack, as when one fails the car will run like a bag of sh!te. Mine made my car shake really bad!

mine had this changed all 4 coil packs plus maff and dv try the maff first :grin:

Try plugging it into vag com or a code reader first :wink:

vag com done and came back with these faults:
16486 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70): Signal too Low
P0102 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17763 - Cylinder 1 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1355 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17766 - Cylinder 2 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1358 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17769 - Cylinder 3 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1361 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
17772 - Cylinder 4 Ignition Circuit: Open Circuit
P1364 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000
what do we think then?

have you checked the loom for any bare / chaffed wires??
looks to me that one wire is breaking down giving you the fault codes :undecided:

hmm thats alot of fault codes. When i had a coilpack fail on me. The fault was 'missfire in cylinder 1'

Did have a look and the ground wire looks to be chaffed, and on one or two of the plugs too - whats the best way to replacing or 'fixing' these? like i said the car pulls very well still and no juddering,i can just hear a faint misfire under acceleartion ?? thanks again guys

either replace the loom or at very least get some insulation tape and repair them :smiley:

how hard is it to replace the whole loom? sorry if these questions seem silly :lipsrsealed:
will a simple cut and crimp connector be sufficient or a cut and solder?

not sure about the coil pack loom - i would have thought its simply plug and play so if you can undo a plug you should be fine lol
think the loom is approx £40 :undecided:

after the repairs don't forget to clear the codes to make sure your hard work was worth the effort :wink:

Was thinking before doing any 'repairing' to the wiring to the coils why not test it with a multi meter first :rolleyes: However i have no idea on which of the 4 wires ont he plug to test and what the reading im looking for should be (hopefully that makes sense)? this would surely eliminate the fact that the loom is working correctly wouldnt it?

Sorry to hijack but does any body do better coil packs, likes of splitfire etc, im at my wits end just had my second go in 3 months of ownership, always use VAG ones to replace them. Just wondering as i do a lot of driving on the mainland and I am as such a long way from home and the toolbox To be honest i find the AA / RAC very little help aswell.

What are the symptoms of your car 16VWarby? is teh car misfiring quite badly or is it still performing quite well...as it may be your wiring that has chaffed from heat exposure....

Runs like a sack of... makes me wee boobies jiggle a bit its that bad, definately coil pack.
Uses fuel more than a vr should sounds worse than a tractor (they sound rather good at times)
But then she does get given death regularly it would be rude not to when you have open roads and few speed limits, its the price you pay for having fun.

Sadly this is quite a major loom and its also very expensive from VW, your looking at £400. Go to www.breakeryard.com and put in what part you want, they will email you back with part and price. It cost me £50 all in for mine and turned up next day. Quality :grin:

Right, Ive been sorting out the wiring and have stripped the wiring and cleaned it up and taped it up again, (quite a good job actually :laugh:)
I no longer have any of the faults that were showing up when I scanned it yesterday - result! BUT i still have the slight misfire....now when the coil packs are playing up do they usually bring up a fault on vag-com?
my performance is still there but there is defo some kind of missing under acceleration - could the timing be out at all?

generally a faulty coil pack will show up on vag-com just like jonnys did cant remember the code of the top of my head but it referred to misfire-cyl 1

thought about changing ur plugs? i wouldnt have thought its a coilpack failure as mine went a few weeks ago and gt a missfire cyl02 when the AA ran the codes etc, the loom would be worth looking at but uve done/sorted that,id look at changing the plugs as they could cause the missfire if they are worn/old?

Just to let u know - it ended up being an exhaust problem, gasket needed replacing at the manifold end which was causing it to blow and a very slight misfire :shocked: Got a full miltek on its way anyway :evil: :evil: :evil:

nice one mate glad your sorted :wink: oh and good work with getting a miltek much better than standard turbo/cat back? res or non res? :evil:
