Title: Numberplate screw head snapped off
Post by: maxp on 28 February 2009, 19:23
I went to take the numberplate off, foolishly got the drill out, press the trigger...argh.

Being a screw that hadnt moved in at least 10 years the screw head came off but left its shaft still in the car.

Any tips of how to get this mother out? Theres plastic cover on the inside of the boot lid but im not sure whats behind it and if it will help?

Only other possible method i see is to drill 'through' the screw shaft with increasingly bigger drill sizes until theres nothing but the original thread left.

I take it, it's the rear? Simply grab a centre punch and a short, sharp tap with a hammer should pop it through. You may have to get hold of another gromet. Or, could you not get pliers on the remaining shaft, after carefully cutting some of the gromet away? If not, drill time!!!

Yep its the rear.
Wouldnt hitting it with a centre punch take the surrounding thread out with it? Not sure about the gromet part you mention. The beginning of the shaft is now flush so nowt to grab onto

I would use the smallest drill bit you can get as in 1 to 2mm to set the hole, then plough through with a 4mm and finally tap out with something suitable. Doing it this way means that you drill bit wont 'wander' causing unwanted damage.

drilling out a tiny plate screw is going to be very difficult. if there is any shaft sticking out get mole grips on it. if not pop the trim off inside the boot, tap the plastic square plug out from behind, replace with a new one.

Is it really that easy to replace them as i have a screw snapped off in one of mine and so my plate is stuck on with tape one side and keeps falling down

Heat the plastic plug up with a hot air gun to melt the plastic, it will then just fall out, gaffer tape the holes up, and stick on the new plates with double sided sticky pads...

you could just replace the plastic bungs, they're pence from vw.  I have some o them nice plate surrounds to go on, saves messin about wi tape :)

Mine did that, so I've fired some smaller screws into the bungs at and angle next to the rusted up screws for now.

I will get some new bungs one day and do the job right. As for getting the old ones out, how about attacking them with a soldering iron from inside? That would be a bit more controlable than a hot air gun

The plastic bungs are the circular bits about the size of a 5p coin holding the screw in? They will just come out if heated? Think you said they were square before which has me confused

they are square on the back, with a round face. if the screw is removed they just push out from behind. in fact i cant see why they wouldnt push out even if the screw was still in there, IIRC they dont expend or anything as the screw is threaded in...

Yeah you can pop them out with the screw still inside. Can't believe all this talk of drilling stuff out for this

Ok thanks. What is the deal with removing the plastic cover at the base of the inside of the boot lid, there are about 6  blank plastic heads. Are you just supposed to lever them out with a flat head?

CAREFULLY lever and pull the panel away. and the plugs will pop out.

Try to hold your hand under them cos the little buggers fly out and get lost. You can still buy them for a few pence from the dealers if any do make a successful break for freedom.

How easy are the new inserts to fit? Do they just pop in or is there a trick to it?

Im sick of my plate holder falling down on one side where its stuck up with double sided tape

I know im probably resurrecting a dead thread but i only got round to doing this today so, after removing the plastic cowling revealed this rusty mess, a squirt of wd40 and a good set of plyers, the plastic plug wasremoved.

I'm also resurrecting an old thread.

Getting the plastic bungs is no problem at all, but what I workout is where to get suitable replacement screws from  :undecided:

I just used some self tappers, the ones i found were a bit long so i cut em down a bit. im sure you can find a local fixings place that can fget you some stainless ones!
I had plate holders so wasnt fussed what the bolt heads looked like either

surely VW would be able to get you some if you asked though

Yeah right! They couldn't even find the rear bungs at first, I had to insist that they were there.
