I had some new wheels fitted on Monday, and in the showroom and in the pictures I've seen on the internet, they look good.
But now I've got them fitted on my car, I'm not so sure. Sometimes I think they look really good, and other times I wish I had silver. I can still change them to silver for a small cost. If I keep them I'm going to get the Eibach Sportline springs fitted because I think it needs the lower stance to work best with the more aggressive wheels.
So should I be brave and keep them, or go for the 'sensible' silver option??

Don’t change them, they look awesome   .
I’ve got the standard dark silver Pescaras on my ED30 (Candy White) and if black was an option it would have been ticked.
Be brave, be different!
ps (cheeky question how much?) PM me if you like.

id say keep it black, red and black look pretty nice together especially with the red lip round the wheel.
-
They look sweet mate. Keep them on there.

not sure what it is... maybe changing the black spoilers to red would help?? maybe?? :undecided:
-
Black for me - looks nice alongside the red, and the red lip looks great ;)
-
Mate they look awesome.
Lower it a bit more, and you will be amazed at how much better it will look
-
silver for me to mate just something about black wheels on any car they just look awful, i love that fresh look when you have just cleaned the arse off your car and the wheels stand out etc but with black they just look the same all the time, but each to there own as thats just my oppinion bud
-
Looks odd, the combination of 5 door and black bumpers doesn't look right.
-
looks good, havent seen pescaras done with the red lip before, get the car slammed and it will look alot better!
keep em!
-
love the wheels , but colour code the skirts and arse end imo
-
I really like it  I was thinking of something similar myself
-
The power of Christ compels you to keep them black.

Once you've gone black..you never go back...........errr.......or is that for something else

I think they look rubbish and you should get rid asap (see my pm )
-
keep the black but loose the red rim imo
That would mean having to get them resprayed which costs ££££'s You can also get black edition BBS CHs which have a silver metallic stripe/edge if you don't like the red, but I think red looks

My Edition 30 with custom BBS CHs...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Are you sure?

....
If I ever went for black wheels (unlikely) on my red GTI, I would want those with the red rim.
They don't look right because the red rim draws your eye to then notice a huge gap to the wheel arches - So you need to sort out your suspension, which may also have added benefits if you do so with handling rather than just looks in mind.
Also you need coded side skirts.
It's a slippery slope!!
-
Hi ho Silver all the way.....black wheels look like they need a wash. But then I am old enough to remember when all cars came with steel wheels!! Just my opinion but you did ask.
-
Really like the colour - they're different which is nice!
Are they the 17"?
Dan :)
-
Thanks for all of the opinions, and keep them coming! It's really interesting to see people's opinions about them.
The car's booked in for the suspension to be done on Tuesday, so I'll see what difference that makes. I think the lowering will make a big difference to the appearance and it needs it with this more aggressive wheel. I'll post some pics when it's done
DanoGTI - They're 18" but I won't take offence!
No Golf Clubs at all - My sister said that it looked like my wheel trims had fallen off, but then I pointed out she drove a Corsa...
-
here's mine colour coded and lowered
are they genuine BBS, i have seen CH reps both black and silver on ebay very recently?

Does lowering the car a little make the ride harder and more uncomfortable?
-
Does lowering the car a little make the ride harder and more uncomfortable?
Generally speaking, yes, but it depends on how you lower it too. Different brands of springs/shocks/coilovers will be harder/softer and more/less bouncy. Some are adjustable so you can keep them closer to stock damping for comfort and slam it for shows
-
Does lowering the car a little make the ride harder and more uncomfortable?
Generally yes, as Jimp says, but not necessarily uncomfortable. There are so many factors and brands and types of springs/coilovers that you can get.
Mine is relatively low - 105 mm front splitter clearance and 75 mm rim to wheel arch, is very hard but has bespoke spring ratings/lengths/dampers:
Review : - http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1457.0 - If you sit on the wing it's rock solid but I personally find the ride comfortable.

LOL - no offence intended!! Because of the blackness of the wheel, they look more compact (IMHO)
No taking away that they're a great looking wheel though

..........same here i'm old to :grin:Very nice rims but in silver for me.Sorry for being cheeky but were they very expensive ?.
-
Keep them black
-
they are a lovely wheel but I think you need to colour code it
-
Silver for me im afraid

If the alloys were silver, then I would agree that the black plastic bits would need painting red - buuuuuutttt - with those black alloys, I actually think the black plastic looks quite good - and all fits together very good.
-
Does lowering the car a little make the ride harder and more uncomfortable?
That all depends. If you lower, but have identical spring and damper rates, then the ride and comfort will be exactly the same. However, if you do lower more than say 20mm but keep the OEM rates, then there is a high risk that you will bottom out the car (catching the underside on the tarmac!) - which isn't good.
So most lowered suspension options will include slightly stiffer springs and dampers.
However, even different brands of tyres can have a known difference in ride quality and comfort.

If you suspension, weather OEM or aftermarket, is 'bouncy' - then your dampers are foooked.

Yes, but fully adjustable, or even kits with limited adjustments tend to be quite a bit more expensive compared to fixed rate aftermarket set-ups.

Thanks for all of the opinions on this, I'm convinced to keep them black now (until I change my mind again anyway!). I had planned to get it lowered today but I had to reschedule to next monday, I think that will make all the difference to how the wheels look.
I agree with TT though on the painting of the skirts and spoilers, I think keeping them black goes well with the wheels and the other black trim on the car, although I might get the upper part of the rear bumper painted.
As I say, I'll post some pictures when it's lowered. Between now and then I've got to get my BMW E30 sorted for its MOT  It's a good job I like cars
-
Good choice - keep them black.
Looks

Black wheels with a red rim FTW!!!
The suspension drop will make a world of difference :afro:
-
This is why I voted black (currently sat in my boot awaiting fitting )

Hurdy, how much did they set you back??

Hurdy, how much did they set you back??
Not as much as if they were straight from a shop. E30M3 sold them to me with under 100miles on them from new and in A1 condition. Let's just say I saved a substantial amount
brand new now they are £1750 with cheapo tyres...with F1's around £300+ more
Oh and if you are still undecided on having black wheels, here's a quick pic of mine on the car ready for Ultimate Dubs

Can't say I'm a fan of silver with black wheels  I liked your lightweight ones!
-
TBh I preferred the wheels in silver...sorry Hurdy!

I've still got the lightweight Team Dynamic alloys. These are more for show than track days and 1/4 mile sessions

Looks good!
Although I work in Telford I'm missing to go to Ultimate Dubs because for some strange reason me and a group of friends are camping up the top of Cader Idris tomorrow night. Shame, I might have seen your car in the metal and complimented your wheels!
-
^^^^^^Looking good hurdy
Keep the black wheels on the red GTI , when you have the springs on it will look even better. I would also go with black mirrors
Heres a pic of mine at the last santa pod. (the red one )

Well I had it lowered on Monday and the wheels look a lot better now. I've not had chance to take a picture yet so I'll give it a quick wash on the weekend and post up some new pictures and see what you think.
Thanks for all of the comments
