Got back last night after driving to and from Norwich to Cognac in South France in my 96 16v GTi
Car sat at 80mph most of the way  and was returning 38mpg on the way down and 36mpg on up.
Not a single problem with the car, and twas a smooth drive.
Mk3s are the bomb!
-
Good to hear - how many miles has she done ??
I'm going on holiday in April and having to drive to Manchester for flights (£500 cheaper than Glasgow) but was worried about the 500 mile round trip but after reading this puts my mind at ease a bit lol.
My car is sitting on 97k and was worried she was getting a bit old !!
-
Don't worry, these MK3s are BULLETPROOF ha! I went to Cornwall the weekend just gone, all in all did 450 miles. The week before I drove from Yeovil to Birmingham which was a 350 - 400 mile round trip, and last year in April I drove from Yeovil to Manchester, easily 400 miles round trip, not a single problem with the car.
When I got mine, she was on 97K, since Feb last year she's sitting on 104K. :)
-
I would never go as far to call my old one bulletproof, broke down on me twice.
-
Is that your car in the picture ?

Me? Yeah that's mine :)
wayne - After what I've been through with mine (that 6 months oil leak and riding around a whole month with no oil) I'd say mine is bulletproof :P
-
Nice - just that little bit nicer than mine - i'll get there though !!
I'm needing a small touch up for a very light patch of rust (less than half a centimetre) - do you have the part code or is it easy enough to phone up VW ??
-
good job mate, im driving to amsterdam from nr bristol in may! fingers crossed it all goes smoothley. bout a 1100 mile round trip!!
european breakdown cover is a good idea!!! anyone no prices?

By touch up do you mean body colour paint code by any chance?
If so ALL the paint codes are up in the sticky section of here!
Edit - sorry its in the maintanence/info section.

This is no game, this is real life :P :P
Is yours the same colour as mine chap? If so what reg? I think my paint code is somthing like LC6P or something, there's a sticker in the boot of your car that has it on, underneath the carpet :)
-
Aye the same colour - think its classed as dragon green - had a look at that paint chart and it says LC6P as well - VW is pretty far from me - will they send it out do you think ??

Damn I got it right lol! It's Dragon Green but I heard there are too shades, the early models had a slightly lighter shade whereas the later models (ie mine being a 1996) had a slightly darker shade. I actually had a badgeless grill sprayed for me, the chap took my petrol flap to Halfords to get the paint mixed and it was a perfect match.
I'm in the same position as you, need to touch up the rust. Summer job that though.
-
Mine is a 97 R - just checked under the carpet - L26U it says !!!!
-
My car has done 130k  but still pulls strong.
Its due some TLC this week when I get paid, new filters, plugs, and leads and oil change for being a good girl.
And aye mine is dragon green as well.
-
That'll be your paint code then chap. Guess mine might be the older one then?
-
had this mk 3 over 2 years now, not once broken down, only ever had one problem which was the ignition switch but it didnt stop me using the car when it happened, i got it in bits at the roadside and figured out if i held the wire that goes to the ignition switch it would start and drive.. so i tied it to another wire and drove it for 2 weeks like this till i got round to fixing it hahahaha..
-
mine is a mark 3 in dragon green:

Take the golf and have some fun!
I loved driving over there, bigger better quality roads, and they are all empty so you can piss about doing what you like! - FTW!

Dont behave like a 14 year old.... and when you're in France or any other country behave yourself, you're not bigger than the law just because you've left the empire
I love my golf, but lets get it clear, 2 adults, 3 kids under 4 and all the luggage is not going in a gti.

I managed to do 600 miles a few months ago in my 210,000 mile 1.8 MK3. I had to go up to london from cornwall, planned to stay over night but i was up for the drive and it saved money so we did it in one go... Didnt let me down once! I have alot of faith in my old girl though, I never see it as a reliable car but after 210k miles the engine stick ticks over almost silently, not even the slightly faint tapping or ticking from the valve gear or anything and i usualy rack up over 1000 miles per month... Bullet proof or what?

to be fair, the drivers in mainland Europe are not as good as the UK on the whole.
