Hi folks!
Just completed a clutch change on my mk2 GTI. Now thats done we're back on track for a reliable daily driver. New driveshaft bolts are all im waiting for (VW parts say it wont be here till FRIDAY! Meh) So while waiting i thought i'd double check all was working and the clutch is done right so i tried starting it. No go sadly. First few attempts identified that i'd cracked the tip of the king lead in the coil, so i changed it out and tried again. No go, and the engine was now locking on the second or third turn. By this time i was now noticing that the fuel was constantly priming, and not hitting cut out. Also, theres a fair reek of fuel but no visible evidence which shows a leak. My guess is that the non start due to the king lead has caused a fuel flood, but i cant work out why the fuel is not cutting out after a few seconds. Added to that theres a strange clicking noise from the inlet manifold around the fuel rail AFTER i have attempted to start it. The biggest puzzle is why it has started doing this when i havent been about that part of the engine during the clutch change?? Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Im now stumped!

this was my first topic here

sorry to say i think you have done the same as i did

Ah tits, that sounds like exactly whats happened. The earth to the box was thoroughly bolted in right, but i now have a memory of shorting the battery out on the gearbox (using a crowbar during the clutch change and it popped out and touched the positive). It sparked a peach too, reckon that may have toasted the ecu?
-
maybe but i would change the earth strap and ECU
drop the oil out of it too
i got about 20ltrs of petrol out of my sump
-
Excellent, i think thats exactly whats happened. Bah. I'll try the earth strap tomorrow as i might get away with it and i have nothing to lose! Seen an ECU on fleabay for a tenner so cant hurt to get that bought either! I picked up a new filter yesterday to do an oil change once the clutch was done, so im glad i didnt do it just yet! Will drain it out if it doesnt start tomorrow too. Cheers for the speedy reply too!! Will let you know how i get on.

make sure the numbers are the same on the ECU
mine was a special one as my cars got a lambda probe
-
Yea, i gathered that from your thread! Looks like you had fun with it! Will make sure tomorrow then that its the correct one before i buy it..

Just checked my ECU today. I have a Digifant II ending in "DB". Is this reasonably common or similar to the other ones found around?
-
:undecided: :undecided:
dont know fella
if you have a friendly VW parts man he will give you all the newer part numbers that will fit
try looking on flebay for them
i bought a new one from the usa
perfect

DB sounds very familiar. That is what was in both my 8v's. Don't buy one from a Corrado G60 though. They are different and have a small tube that senses manifold pressure. I don't think that will work on a digi 8v.

Cool. Leaving the country on work for a few weeks so will use the supra till im back, that should give me time to source one that suits...

So this explains a bit about the ECUs and where they go and why. Age revisions seems the first variance, but whats the difference between PB and PF engines?
-
PF is a PB engine with a CAT :)
-
Pretty useful info there buddy...
This info in the maintenance section? If not could be pretty good for furture refrence if it was put there...:)

Excellent! That should in theory mean that any PB ECU should be interchangeable? Its a DB initialed one on my non cat gti.

I cant say for sure. It might be but i didnt find it there.

I'm not 100% sure if the plug onm the ECU is the same, even if it is id imaging the PF ecu wont work as well without a lambda? Or do you mean plugging a PB ecu into a PF car? If it does fit then you may see an improvement, but if it has a cat it could end up dead from the lack of lambda feedback to ze ecu...
-
PB will not work on a PF motor
i tried it
mine is a PF when fitted with a PB ECU there was no spark
think i still got a couple of ECU'S ere from when i was trying to fix mine if you want one :)
i'll stick the numbers up tonight or tommorrow
-
Yea, that would be handy.
Mine is a non cat model with a DB, I'm not wantig to run a cat ECU, im wondering if other non-cat ECU's with different serial numbers will work...
