Anyone else thought their brakes are crap on the ED30?
My previous GTI V was ace, but on ED30 they are rubbish.
V Strange as thought they would be the same, Guess the extra hp causes probs!
-
There is nothing bad on VWs.. merely 'an opportunity to upgrade'
-
I would have thought initially that VW would have put the R32 set-up on the ED30 as standard. They have the R32 fronts on the Leon - which is cheaper, so why not the ED30?
Once the car is remapped you REALLY do need to upgrade the brakes

yeah i noticed the same thing when i test drove the ED30 - almost put me off the golf
then i get my standard GTI and the brakes feel excellent!

Duff brakes would explain the curse.

I'd love upgraded brakes but i find the standard GTI brakes to be brilliant and really cant justify it. How much are the front disks and pads for the GTI?? £550 for complete cupra brakes is very tempting and if the gap isnt too much i may upgrade to those when i need replacements

Do the R32 disks fit under 17" wheels or are 18" needed to acommodate?
-
ED30 come with 18" wheels as standard
-
has anyone tried 16" rims with gti brakes? i know 17s fit over as the gti's have these as rolling stock (didnt mean to sound american... honest)
Reason i ask is iv got 16s on mine at the moment and will be purchasing some gti brakes soon and it will be a little longer before a new set of wheels make an appearance and im desperate to bolt them on
-
fwiw the US guys sometimes use 16" steel wheels on their gtis for winter.
-
sweet! i calculated it to be tight but wasnt sure how tight
alloys should clear the calipers then fingers crossed

yes I've been using them this winter as snow chains will not fit over the 17 inch wheel (because the 225 width). Although when arriving at our resort the roads were clear enough to not need the chains..

Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if R32 brakes fit behind the standard 17" alloys?

The 345mm brakes a-la R32 need 18" rims.

I am not sure about that, as the pic shows below, there is a lot of room between the disc/caliper and the rim.
Although are you talking about the cooling airflow being restricted by the rim being too close? i agree it will be very close, but may be achievable.

Ps ignore the soft tyre, I had been using that to supply the pressure bleeder, for 4 calipers.

Yes, but don't forget that rim is made by BBS. On my last S4, that had the identical 345 discs and calipers (albeit with a larger diameter piston), and with the OEM standard 18" Avus III alloys made by Ronal, there was fcuk all clearance between the caliper and the wheel.
So you may be lucky and find that one style of 17" rim (from a quality manufacturer like BBS) may fit - I would still strongly suggest that you would find that many 17" rims will snag the caliper - hence the basic advice that 18"s are needed for the 345 set up.
OH, and you are running them underinflated (and yes, I have read your next post ), there is excessive wear on the outer shoulder. What pressure do you normally run in the fronts?
-
38.0 psi or 2.6 bar.
I check them every week, it is ingrained. Just this wheel had been the air supply for 4 good caliper bleeds.

does nobody use the search function
R32s are next on my list. i really need them now!!
-
This thread shows a couple of cars with R32 brakes running 17" wheels, although they're not Monzas.

Don't forget though that numbers on the fuel flap are actually just a 'recommendation'. That means that those pressures on the flap are a 'one size fits all', for the 'mr average' driver. If your vechicle loading, or more likely, driving style, actually differs from 'mr average' then it is perfectly acceptable (and legal) to tweak the recommended pressures. So, because your tyres a wearing more heavily on the shoulders, I would suggest you actually need to increase the pressures on the front a little more. On my GTI, I actually run the fronts at 42psi, and the rears at 37psi - and get a perfectly level and flat wear rate across the width of the tread.
Just this wheel had been the air supply for 4 good caliper bleeds.
Yes, yes, I got that!
-
I have upped the pressures to 40 psi. I will see how they feel, and what the wear is like over a period.
Cheers for the advice TT.
