That's got to be the most sensible of answers.....when you turn them on you really will know if you have got them or not! They are soooo much brighter and will turn nighttime into daytime.
-
And they should also do this:

And just to the left of the main light switch, you won't have a thumbwheel for manually leveling them (but you will still have the thumbwheel for dimming the dash lights )

Too much work and expense IMO...
Get some upgraded bulbs and be happy.

There are two sides to that story. Do a quick search on here, there are many threads covering that topic.

how do u get a bulb out of a xenon
-
There is also a current thread on blue headlight bulbs. Many people here have either Philips Xtreme Power bulbs or Philips Bluevision bulbs (which I have). Both make a vast improvement compared to standard. This is the most cost-effective way of making your headlights brighter and look better.

And more importantly - keeping them legal!

Aren't they? How can you tell? They look just like the ones I had fitted to my old GTi and the ones fitted to my current GTI - both are factory fit Xenons... what am I missing?

I might actually be mistaken about you image from earlier in the thread, because you can't actually see a close up of the headlamp for any definative detail. :undecided: However, the geniune OEM Golf5 xenons have a larger diameter 'fish eye' glass lens, when compared to other non-genuine Mk5 lights, even those projector style halogens.
I'm busy searching for a decent close-up . . . .

Here ya go - a close up of a genuine Mk5 Xenon:

They could be the HELLA XENON look headlamps... i think they are very cool and will seriously think about buying them in the future as i have halogen so would be a good upgrade but at £450 its a lil steep now.
