Ok so we all have one .... why do we love them so much .... whats your passion for having one?
For me its all about the way it looks, even when stood still its just sooo cool
Also, ever been just driving along, changed a gear and thought `I f**king love this car!`
The tasty rumble you get even just ticking over??
I get it every day, we drive a lovely old motor folks, for sure!
Id like to hear what you guys love about the Mk2
-
cant explain, from as long as i can remember i love the styling and the "retroness" same reason i like the 205gti even though its french and its going to rust and break down alot!
also love integrale and E30's maybe i have a fetish for quad round lights?!
-
when i first joined the RAF a lad who gave me a lift from Aylesbury to Leeds every weekend had bought a brand new 16v Mk2. :afro:
I was smitten as a 16 year old spotty youth - wanted one ever since. :embarassed:
20 years later, and havin decided to hang up my leathers and quit 2 wheels, here I am
-
Not sure why I wanted a MK2 to start with really. I used to drive a MK2 Scirocco GTX and wanted something just as quick but with power steering and a more comfortable ride. I'm not disappointed actually as the Golf is really fun to drive. I'm not sure if I'd have had one if my brother hadn't been into VWs as he's had several MK2 Golfs and MK1 Sciroccos.
What I like about my MK2 is the general character of the drive, the exhaust note and the fun to be had every time I press the accelerator. It handles great and it's been quite reliable too, touch wood, and for an old car is still doing well.
Unlike others here I've never had dreams in the past of finally owning a MK2 though; just sort of happened really.
It's nice to feel you're driving a classic hot hatch too.
-
1994. saved up my pennies bought a 1990 8v in white at 19....now at 33 bought a 16v oak green. Always liked them for some reason, quad lights and double exhaust seems to make a car for me, and glad to be back! Despite an e36 M3, Focus ST etc etc. Mk2 GTI just a great car....
-
WELL... You really have just opened a can of worms mate!
In a nut shell?.. It's not just a car is it. It's a part of your life much like having chidren because thats the way they behave most of the time.
Personally i feel a connection between me an my mk2, something i only ever got previously when i was 18 and owned a 1973 Beetle 1500cc. Man them were the days, it was love!!
It's all about Soul. If you've got soul you see it, if you have'nt you'll never know.
Thats enough from me now.
-
Always wanted one since I started to drive. The look, the drive, the power and being a bit different from everyone else.
I still find myself having a quick glance over my shoulder whenever I've parked it up with a little smile.
Not many people can say that about their car.
-
it was cheap on ebay with tax and MOT. :lipsrsealed:
-
Awesome, Im loving the read
For me these car just posses so much character. Im sure much of us could afford to drive something newer an more powerful? But hey we love our old GTi`s
And aimed at Chuff, Im on my medical and fitness for RAF on 23 Feb, hoping it will go well!
Anyway - continue the Mk2 lovin` !
-
I used to work on MK2s while they were still in production, along with Porsche 924/944 and of course 911's.. quite simply, I saw the GTI as a baby Porsche, sharing many components, build quality, and image that must have been the envy of all other hot hatch makers, the bottom line was that the MK2 GTI was a "must have" piece of kit, Early 80's.. one of the most popular colours to have was white, of all things! Tornado, and Mars red's were always popular, but the real shocker is that Oak green was never a cool colour, and was usually given a wide berth by the used car world, along with Jade green (see my sig) how things change!
Panel fit on MK2's was never the best, although the pressings themselves were fine, and generally free from ripples, and production marks, though when fitted to the shell, extra wide gaps were apparent, especially on the doors, wing's and bonnet, sometimes up to 10mm wide, that's about 4mm too wide! rear bumpers were always a bit iffy as well (small bumper) viewed from the rear, the right hand side always seemed to dip, as it turned the corner, under the O/S tail lamp, though easily sorted with a shim under the right hand bumper bracket.. I really could go on, and on.. :nerd: :nerd:
So really the golf is a bit of a phenomenon, and still look there best in standard form, maybe just lowered a touch, and some cool rims, you cant go wrong

only had mine for a week and i love it :D fancied something different (coming from a 1.2 w reg punto), fairly fast, relativel cheap 90's hot hatch, was never going to go down the whole saxo/corsa crap route so it was either a mk2 gti or an xr2i! and mk2 gti it was! even driving home it was incredibly loud, pretty bouncy bloody freezing cos the heater had packed in (i was wearing a hoody and a coat and i was still cold) yet i'm not ashamed to say i occasionally burst out laughing at the sheer fun of it! even when i park it now i glance back (more than once - yes im sad :D ) just to get one last look at it before i go inside! I'm actually excited about driving it home from uni next weekend just so i can getg it on some country roads rather than boring town/motorway stuff! :D and thats why i love it!!
-
i wanted a cheap little car to get me to work and back after i moved to Holland to live ,
thought about escort's as i have had loads but over in Europe they are a little rare , and i thought , fool it , I'm close to Germany and i always liked the MK2 GTi
so i started looking , found my Edition One , so we want to look at it and i fell for it (and all it's little quirks)
then i just looked forward , tuning , cleaning , and enjoying the drive of it ,
now it is broken down again with a really bad wiring problem , so I'm going to tear it all out and fit a VR6 and wiring looms
all it's little problems just add to the character
-
I owned a nice Mk4 1.8T and was pissed off with the VW dealer ripping me off all the time. I tried to sort out a few of the niggles myself via the internet, found this forum, found out how to fix the problems via this forum and got an extreme sense of satisfaction from fixing something myself (it was a job that cost me £40, but the dealer was going to charge £250 min).
This got me into thinking about DIY car maintenance as a whole and that it would be entirely feasible on an older, simpler car. Then I saw this photo, and was smitten:

mmm this could be a long thread
My vw passion started about 7 years ago with my ex's 1l 1983 polo what a beast it cost me £130 and i couldnt believe how reliable and tidy it was for its price and age.
When i had passed my test i was lookin for a lupo sport but couldnt find any so stupidly i was enticed into buying a 206 :embarassed:
what a piece of s**t that turned out to be so back to the v dubs it was.
Found my beauty in the local paper £400 for an 86 atlas grey 3dr 8v gti with 86k on the clock couldnt believe my luck it was so cheap i wondered why? Turns out the lad didnt know much about them it was an absolute bargain.
Since then ive never looked back. It never hurts spending money on her coz she is so worth it and always puts a smile on my face when i drive. The looks are stunning why dont they make good looking cars anymore? Its a bit sad but i always walk by the car park on my dinner to make sure she is ok and cant help but keep turning back to look at her till she is out of sight.
Sorry for the long post i could go on all day about how much i love mk2's mine inparticular
VDUBS RULE
-
I think its something to do with the cars that were desirable when you were growing up. I remember gazing at my first gti at the age of 18 for hours on end. I'm on my fifth and I can still use a drive in it to cheer myself up.
They define the word charisma.
Thats not to say though, that they aren't a total pain in the ar$e and that one regularly feels like setting fire to the bloody things
-
mk2s rock because they're cheap, good fun and easy to fix.
-
It's the whole respect thing too. People tend to give way to you because they want to look at your car! I get so many other drivers looking at me, esp mk4 and mk5 owners. And the round headlight thing-people are used to seeing jelly mould headlights!! And, most importantly, the BIG smile factor, EVERY time you drive her! Oh, and cocking your inside back wheel on fast cornering....that's adrenalin rush right there!!!
-
Have not driven mine since buying it over a month ago ,but love coming home and seeing it on drive looks really nice , sits well and I have had lots of positive comments sinc owning it
MUST GET IT ON ROAD
Some of the 2`s on here are so , so nice well done fellas
-
I wanted a 90s hot hatch, narrowed it down to a mk2 gti, 205 gti or a clio 16v, got it down to a 205 and a golf, had a drive in both and fell in love with the way the golf felt
They are easy to work on, easy to get parts for, have a good following and it just makes me smile everytime i drive it or see it parked up, gets plenty of attention as well (especially when im out with my mate in his mk1!)
-
I walked past this mk2 everyday from school and always said ''i want that golf!''
I turned 18 and made the guy an offer and we had a deal. Still have it today (about 6+ years). Ill keep it for as long as possible.
Ive always loved the look of these motors.
You dont just buy an old golf. you buy the character. The worst bit is the attention in traffic.
Its more than just a car. The feel, the interior smell and the looks.
-
Agree with all of the above...
The mk2 holds it against any car, the boss's series 1 beema looks like a joke next to the oak green on splits after a polish
Main thing for me, its like lego! fixes up relatively easy, alot of help online, and you deffo do get respect!
With most clean mk2s on the road, you know the owner has taste and its a car built and being looked after, not like new cars bought from a fat wallet...
Also although there are many mk2 owners on the road, evryone has their individual touch on the car in terms of aesthetics
...not just shiny blue lights on the underside
Oh yeah and when you drop gears around the corners it does make one

There is certainly something about the mk2 that just seems right. After driving 2 Peugeots a 106 and a 306 both diesel it was time to get a vdub as both my dad and my sister were hooked on them. I looked around at corrados and 'roccos but i kept coming back to the mk 2 golf gti. i spotted my 8v oak green on volkswizard and had to have it and am so glad i did. it was the right colour at the right time at the right price.
I'm just in love with it now. the car is part of me now and like someone said previously you cant help but glance back at it in the car park. just to check shes ok.

I am just about to commence with an experiment. November I purchased a Black 5 -door K Plate Mk 2 8 Valve and ever since I have been preparing it for a little shock.
I am going to sell her 04 Corsa Exclusive and give her the keys to this stunning little car.
Maybe she will run off with a man who will buy her a new corsa, but I doubt it. She will learn to love the Mk2 and will never want anything else.
The Mk 2 Golf is the only car that you could do this with - well I hope so anyway.
Will

Like so many other have said, it's the car I really wanted 20 years ago, but could no way afford. A mate of my Dad had a new one in 88, when I was 18. I told myself that one day I would have a new Golf GTI. I bought a new one in 1999, but it never hit the spot. What I really needed was a Mk2.
It always makes me smile when I drive it, and I dont have to drive quickly to have fun.
I also think they are very cool. There's nothing quite like driving through town in the summer with the sunroof open catching admiring glances from tho's who know.
Cool without trying. If you have to try, you're not cool.
-
It is not only an iconic car but also grin-inducingly fun to drive, better built then a lot of much newer cars and faster than a lot of them as well! Am onto my second as my second car and wouldnt want anything else...
-
my mate was after a mk2 gti 8v in 94 we looked at five he bought one 89 on a g plate thought no more about it then i borrowed it to get to work wow talk about fun he totaled it in 1999 £200 scrap value and i bought it fixed it and still have it today still smile know when i drive it my friends ask why i dont by something newer, well its fun ,cheap to fix and reliable think most agree

and my family have always been into VW's, mainly Bugs, but my father has had a few Golf's in his time too. I remember his white MK1 'Citi' Golf back in the 80's  Dogs danglies tbh.

Replace the bike with kids and that's pretty much the same story as my Dad's!

they are the sex.
everyone seems to have a fond memory of them, and they just look good from every angle ...

I've just noticed. Your sig is arse about face!
Sig changed

unlike most of you i never really had an interest in vws up until last april, i wanted a car that will be good for alot of motorway miles so bought a mk3 gti 8v and then started looking at pictures of mk2's. i like how comfortable the mk3 was but i missed driving something different so spent ages looking for a mk2 - checking ebay every 5 minutes and all the vw forums. eventually found one and love it, i havent noticed it getting much attention or turning many heads but i didnt buy it to show off so its cool. although i look like a miserable bastard most of the time im grinning from ear to ear whenever i jump in the mk2
-
Pretty much always had VWs both air and watercooled, so having a MKII GTi was inevitable at some point. Main reason I purchased my current one was to reduce my monthly running costs and therefore use the 911 less.
Good handling, fun to drive, good MPG, easy to fix and run, depreciation proof, classic looks. What else is there?
4 Polos
3 Golfs
1 Beetle
1 Karmann Ghia
1 Porsche 912
1 Porsche 924
1 Porsche 911
Its in the blood.
-
I recently got a Mark 2 GTi 8v. There are many reasons for me choosing this car really.
- When you say "I got a Golf GTi" most people instantly think of the mark 2. It has reputation!
- Was cheap
- Can get insured on it
- It's a Golf GTi. Just has that magic that other cars don't have. You don't get in it and think "it's a car", you get in it and think nothing, but just enjoy being there.
-
Liked them since I was a kid and can still remember the adverts of the vws dropping out of nowhere into the white room.
They just seem to have character and unlike alot of others vehicles from the time don't look too dated + the driving mechanics are pretty excellent! Even turned around the missus afetr she had a go and she hated "small" cars
-
why do we all love the mighty MK2?
good question
for me its got to be the looks, the fact that most jobs are diy, the support from you guys, easy to tune and hardly any electrics to go wrong!
what i dont like
the fact mines off the road rusting and full of water again
but i still look at her and think its the best looking car ever built
VW F**K THE MK7 BUILD MORE MK2S!
-
I love mk2 gti's, saw my uncles brand spanking new Atlas Grey 8v in 1986-87 and fell in love.
Then my Ma had a Tornado Red driver brand new in 91, sadly before I could drive.
Bought my first mk2 in '99 after passing my test, sold it a month ago for scrap as terminal tin worm
Then felt compelled to fill the void with another mk2, but a 16v in Oak Green this time.
It's a car I take for a drive with not particular destination, just for the sheer joy of driving it. Love it.
Daily driver, weekend warrior, completely classless, truly the peoples porsche...
Actually I'm off for a boost up the back roads right now people....
-
I bought my first in '93 a 1989 8v in white purely by chance, was looking somehting a bit sporty and had my heart set on a Renault 5 GT Turbo (you don't see many of those these days). Kept the '89 until I traded for another white 8v but of the '92 vintage, then I think I lost the way slightly and bought a Fiat.
Then three months ago bought my third Mk2 8v in white again (don't ask me why always white it just seems to happen) and feels just like it did all those years ago, like having a child always looking at it, you just can't park it walk away you have to keep turning around and having another look.
-
mk2s rock because they're cheap, good fun and easy to fix.
sharpie, I don't know if I've done the maths wrong.. But if a mk4 weights 1300kg and the Gti is 150bhp, does that not mean it's 115bhp/ton?
Whereas a 16v mk2 at 135bhp (950kg) would be 142bhp/ton?
Or even the 8v mk2 at 112bhp (950kg) would be 117bhp/ton.. which is more than the mk4 gti!
..or do I just suck at maths? :D
My love for mk2's probably started with my brother who said how much he loved them so I checked these "mk2 golfs" out and thought they were nice! Through some friends, I met two dub enthusiasts who both owned very nice mk2s! Through them, my passion for the car grew until I bought my first mk2 Driver out of the blue. I had just said to myself a week earlier that I wouldn't buy a new car for another year. A stupidly mint/low mileage mk2 came up in the area and I just had to have it!
Unfortunately I had to sell her last night due to University :( As soon as I get back from Uni I'll be on the hunt for a mk2 gti though! A lot of my friends don't understand why I'd want to drive a 16 year old car (despite it being far better condition/runs better/lower mileage than their 4 year old cars!) but they looks, feel, character, everything about them is perfect. It's so obvious why they've become a cult icon!
-
Don't worry tho, still plenty about to choose from when you get back.

power to weight ratio is just that - power/weight.
