Longshot really guys,
As you may know early GTI’s had a matching alloy cigarette/cubby lid. On the later cars they are plain black plastic. Does anyone know where the lids can be purchased... dealer, eBay? Do you know the model number and does it snap into position.
Any info gratefuuly received... Hotrod

Not sure mate, r32 ones are silver?
-
I'm pretty sure that TM Tuning and oempl.us carry them. I have a sticker on mine that was a few € on ebay, looks the biz:

cheers Jimp,
How does it compare to the aluminium trim... good match? Easy to apply, good quality? cheers mate

I bought one for my ED30 off ebay but never got round to fitting it, make me a reasonable bid and I will sell it  (I can send you pics if you want)

Official parts from VW stealer or TPS:
1K0 857 351 F 75T - trim cover, ashtray lid, lacqured bright grey metal
1K0 863 487 F 75T - trim surround, ashtray, lacqured bright grey metal
Those are not absolutely identical to the brushed aluminium trim strips of the GTI, but they are fairly close, and unless you were really looking for any differences, you probably wouldn't notice.
A Torx Tx20 driver is needed, and they are a bit fiddly to fit - so if, say, you can remove a door card without braking anything, you should be able to master these too.
HTH

Mine matches it really well. Installing was easy, just put on the sticker. It's easier if you take out the cubby, but I didn't remove it and got on fine. Looks good, nice reflection and brushed look effect. I'm very happy with it.

thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback!!

I got one from the dealer. The grey is closer to the DSG surround than the dash trim. Pic of mine below:-

It wasn't too bad to fit, the worst bit was getting the old cover to unclip. The oeml.us guide was very handy.

My 05 GTI has a silver cover :)

that tutorial looks like a real ball ache, though looks easier than installing an S3 intercooler

Spot-on description!

Why didn't you fit the surround too? It really finishes the job off, and seems to 'brighten up' an otherwise dull drab dark plastic black hole!

Yup, that link is very, very handy. :afro:

Yes, that is because they were standard on the original Mk5 GTIs, but were ditched from model year 2006 for those cheapo black plastic jobbies - penny pinching VW!
BTW, what "model year" (rather than "registration year") is yours Alan? The 10th digit of your VIN tells you?

that tutorial looks like a real ball ache,
You are joking! A little fiddly, and requiring a little patience and dexterity of the fingers - but that is a job that you could probably do in your lunch break (providing you had the correct tools ). Put it another way - if you can change a battery on a dinky ladies watch, then you could do that job too!
though looks easier than installing an S3 intercooler
Yup - to the meek, the S3 i/c looks like major surgery - but if you have ever worked on something like a Cummins V903 14.7 litre V8 'big-cam' (with the original camshaft operated "unit injector", long before VW invented the PD TDIs) - then nothing really phases you! :afro:

I thought that the brushed surround might be a little too much "bling" :undecided: Maybe later on........

LOL - I would hardly say I 'bling' my cars!

I've taken that spot apart a few times now looking for a live/test fitting someing/etc and it's actually easy as hell. Literally just pop off the gearshift surround, undo a few screws, pull out tray, done.

Looks better than I thought T_T.

TT you are gangsta init !!!!!

Taking the ashtray out isn't the tricky bit. The fiddly bit which requires patience is getting the actual covers off the ashtray surround and particularly the lid. OK, if the original black plastic ones are going in the skip, then you can afford to be a little careless with them - but if you want to refit them and flog the alloy/steel ones separately when you sell the car - then you need some care and patience!

Thanks. You should no me by now - I certainly don't to bling - and any mods which I do actually do - must only be a positive improvement, such as intercoolers or ARBs (hence why my fog lamp grilles are closed!   )
