Title: Exhaust Sound
Post by: Dan34 on 28 January 2009, 18:19
Right heres my problem when i bought my gti 8v it sounded like a tractor really bad ticker sound on idle, which i thought was a front silencer blowing. Wasent a problem as i was gonna put a new full system on anyway. But now i have the system on and my car still sounds like a tractor, has a bad ticker/blowing sound coming from the front end of the car, the sound is worse from cold. I think this could be causing my car to have a lumpy idle

but my question is, it is the manifold blowing or something else?

i have used the search function but doesnt really give me the right answer

Thanks

Dan

Could be the manifold and/or the downpipe from it by the sounds of it. I take it you replaced the exhaust from the downpipe back?

Cant remember if the 8v has a 1 piece manifold to centre section, I know the 16v doesnt but its been a while since I put and exhaust on an 8v

i changed my down pipe and have a tinny blowing type noise and it seems to be around where the pipe goes from 2to1 and i have had mine on a ramp and checked it
only thing i can think of is to heat wrap it to try and reduce the noise
but check for blowing just to make sure

are you sure its not a mechanical problem and not just an exhaust leak?

Like above. Cover the exhaust tip and listen out for a 'hiss'

You may have an air leak. Check the rocker cover bung that seals the air breather to the rocker cover.

could also be a broken manifold stud. Had this before

could be the timing is out, i tuned up a digi gti the other week that sounded like that, guy had changed his zaust since he thought it was blowing.  turned out the cam was out a tooth and the ign was out a country mile...

Mine sounds pretty 'throaty'.  No leaks, I'm wondering if a baffle's gone.

Any other symtpoms of bad timing RJ?  Idle and power are excellent at the mo.

the setup is free to try though, spin it over by hand to verify top n bottom timin marks line up. then warm the engine and hold revs at 2.25k with blue sender off, check the big flywheel diamond lines up with the arrow on gearbox casing :)

How do you spin an engine by hand?

spanner/socket on the cam sprocket bolt, take the spark plugs out 1st and it will spin over easy.

ah but was the timing done properly, digifant is picky about how you do it. quite a few garages are ignorant of this and just set it up like they do old carby/k-jet cars.  which doesnt work.

forgot about this thread. anyway i still have my lumpy idle and slightly tractor sounding exhaust. i had a garage look over it when the wishbone was getting replaced and they said that the manifold was definetly not leaking so im stumped atm, how much do you reckon it cost to get timing check?

Thanks

get a timing light and give it a try, as long as you dont move the dizzy you cant hurt anything ;)
once you get more familiar with the setup and notice the cam belt or dizzy timing is out, you can decide to try to correct it, or just take it to ze garage.
