Post by: tnewson on 22 January 2009, 12:05

classic insurance is a benifit.....if you do low miles say 3000 a year use it on a weekend basis and keep it garaged the price drops massively and even more for the more desirible golfs like the gti,g6o,rallye.

i think you need a clean licence to as there are certain criteria's for your car to be classed as classic insurance. I dont think you register it as a classic it all depends on age and anything over 20years will fall into that catagory.

i got told to keep my classic car policy ( if i sold mine ) the car had to be 15 years old

- mine is a 1990 H reg on a classic policy - 7500 miles a year in  daily use.

What people call a 'Classic Car' makes me laugh. Just because a car is a certain age, does not make it a classic car. If someone said to me that they had a classic car in the garage, and when they open it up, there's an Austin Allegro sitting there in all its square steering wheeled majesty, my immediate response would be to say 'get a life'. Just because its old, does not make it a classic. It's just old.

I have a Golf MKII G60, but I am under no illusions that I own a classic car. Its just an old Golf.

A classic car is a car that, in my opinion, meets one or more of the following criteria.

1. Was made in limited numbers.

2. Was hormoligated for a specific purpose.

3. Was a front runner or started a trend in something.

4. Was raced or has professional racing history.

5. Was an active prototype for a continued series.

6. Was constructed by hand or used specific techniques in their build.

7. Was owned by a specific figure. (Person) (Although this is open to abuse.)

This makes the VW MKI GTI a classic as it started the trend in hot hatchbacks.
This also make the VW Golf MKII G60 Rallye a classic as they were both made in limited numbers and were hormoligated for a purpose, and that was for competition.
MKII GTI's. whether they are 8V, 16V or G60, although desireable oldies, are not classic cars.

The Porsche 911SC, Carrera, 964 etc, are not a classic cars. But the 2.7 R.S is, as is the 959 and the 356.

Your G60 engine fits into those cats for one the G60 engine is now limited numbers plus its got the same racing heritage in VW motorsport.
Secondly how many cars you know back then ran a supercharged block?
Lancia intergrale fits into the same cats!
Don't argue with me, your car is special and a classic fella! Its not all about criterias some times its the drive and the smile it brings to your face, in my book thats a classic!!!

You may have a point there which I am gratefull for, but I will have to reserve on its classic status. Its just that too many people buy some old Ford Cortina or Rover 2000TC and say that they have a classic car! I have even seen a Lada Riva advertised in a classic car magazine, and Marina's seem to be finding their way in there too. I mean, come on! These are mass produced, poor quality under acheivers that were a bad car in their day. So what makes them so special now? I suppose the fact that they have actually survived may have something to do with it. :undecided:

Yup, out of the many they are the few.  Despite their being poorly built, or not particularly advanced, the preservation of their ilk is not without merit.  Aside from everything it reminds us of just how rubbish cars were.

it used to be

but every one was holding on to old minis and mk1 escorts

so they set it to a fixed date

Old vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973

yup and its a pain...it really should be that these cars have already paid their duty...especially as they are over 20years in most cases...

Just wanna add a G60 is def a classic, as these were the limited runs off the golf, and therefore up with the Rallye and imo a touch nicer to look at unless a rallye is really well kept.  Lucky boy to have one

The free road fund was introduced and set at 1973 in about 1998.

It was fixed at 1973 when it was introduced.

It has never moved.

Stop bleating.

Not bleating DH just pointing out that these cars have paid their duty and should be entitled to exemption...or if we do pay the taxes then better quality roads seems not just Manchester is sh!te (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=103360.0)

I put the G60 up there with my Rallye just becuase the Rallye cost more and fewer were made did not make the G60 anyless better!
Lets look at the "Golf Limited" its more rare than a Rallye, but the shape is a standard Golf 16v. I would saw my arm and leg for one!
glad that majority understand the meaning of why we waste so much time on these forums about a badge with two letters printed "VW"
