Right then, car is leaving a massive snail trail and i am 9% certain itds from the Oil cooler itself of the mount.
I have ripped the old one off my spare lump and it seems surprising easy to do
So,
1, are the seals ( o ring for the mount , and one for the mount ) still avaialble ???
2, whats the torque setting for the attachment bolts ???? and the cooler nut
3, is it really that easy ??????
4,could i cheat and clamp the water hoses so i dont have to drain the coolant ??????
Thanks in advance - gotta love dinner time MEchanicking
-
Only 9% certain?
You don't sound very certain.

1. Yes the o-ring is available from yer GSF, ECP or VeeWS. Why would you need another seal? Just run the nut off that secures it, remove the hoses and pull it down.
2. Shouldn't really need torquing - just tighten the sucker up.
3. I think it's easier than you're making out actually.
4. Maybe, but I couldn't be ar$ed with that - drop the coolant and put a litre of fresh G12+ in there.
If cars have taught us one thing it's that nothing is ever easy. It's not a job I'd do at lunch, simply because it involves oil, water and the possibility of not being able to get home if you fail to complete the job!
-
i would do it carefully with a bit of time
don't want to be stuck at the side of the road cos you rushed it
-
The seal went in mine and pissed oil everywhere, got a new seal from VW took the old one off and found some idiot had sealed it with something like bathroom sealant.
It was an easy job but I would only do it at home because if you do get a problem you will be stuck.
If I remember rightly I couldn't get my torque wrench in there so done the nut up by hand to a sensible tightness and haven't ever had a problem since.
I didin't bother clamping the hoses, coolants only cheap so I put some fresh stuff in there.

iirc seal is the same one as on oil filter, so just nick seal off old oil filter
-
alas some confusion
conker 99%
lunch tiime for me is at HOME, everyday- joys of living at work
spare engine dismantled ok. Car was a different story, but the seal between the mount and the cooler was rock hard so hopefully it was that as the mount isnt coming off just yet due to a rounded alen screw
skived off for an hour this avo to clean it all up, managed to plug the coolant hoses so no losses. ( new Antifreeze only went in 300 miles ago  ) . also minimum oil loss so shall refit the filter and top up to ensure i have cured the leak before doing an oil n filter change :lipsrsealed:
-
Be careful when tightening the cooler back up as if you overtighten it the cooler crushes and will always leak
-
the oil cooler seal is different to the oil filter seal, its supposed to sit inside a recess in the cooler so it doesnt get blown out by pressure plus its round in profile rather than flat like on a filter. The gen vag ones have securing tabs that clip onto the cooler, some of the pattern ones are just round. I've used both with no bother (so far)
-
cheers jonny, the spare cooler had the seal with the lugs, cleaned and soaked at work yesterday.
the one fitted to the car DID look like an oil filter seal
[crosses fingers ] no leaks so far
-
the old one was prob squashed flat :)
fingers crossed for you! another source for leaks here are the pressure switches, vag models in the 90s seem to suffer quite a bit from blown switches for some reason!
-
deffo not the pressure switches.
the rear face of the oil cooler was nice and clean compared to the rest. so its been leaking onto or down it and keeping the surface clean.
good run out this avo and still no oil on the bottom of the oil filter so all good so far
-
You'll never guess what happened on the way home from work tonight... My oil cooler split apart right across the cast line.
I was driving down a country lane at about 55mph and suddenly lots of black splatters hit my windscreen, seriously, I was looking up at the sky out the windows thinking WTF is raining on my car!? Then ten seconds later the oil pressure buzzer comes on. I pulled over, opened my bonnet and it looked like someone had thrown a bucket of oil over my engine. The sump was more or less empty.
Boll##ks.
RAC to the rescue with a tow home. Nice mucky job for me over the next few days then...

Holy crap Dave!
Hope nawt else is wrong! :undecided:
-
 glad you got it stopped ok :afro:
have fun

Possible excess oil pressure, but surely the crankcase breather would have to be seriously blocked for it to blow the cooler, plus all temps were perfect. To be honest I'm fairly certain it was just a very very old cooler thats had hot oil and water running through it for maybe 17 years, and it just gave up...
...Albeit rather spectacularly!
-
mmmmmmmmmmmm, can you get the coolers new ?????
let me know dave, might redo mine, new cooler, seal and filter :undecided:
-
You can get the coolers new from vw as a mate of mine bought one a few months back, iirc it was around £30 but it is an exchange part so you need to give them one back
-
Bought one from ECP this morning, £40 inc VAT. Annoyingly it didn't come with a new gasket included, so I can't finish the job now, as I forgot to check before I left the store!
Plus one of the coolant hoses attached to the cooler was so welded on, it tore rather than pull off, so I need a replacement hose now too.
In short, the car will not ready for the drive to work on Monday morning. :undecided:
-
which hose dave - i got both on the spare lump if your struggling

Its the little twisted one that curves back up to the cooler. Cheers for the offer. Not sure what I'm going to do yet.
-
can get it to Lyneham if required mate  guy works with me commutes every day
-
Nice one mate - will let you know if I need the 5th Emergency Service: Chuff-Rescue

Went out to the car this morning and the battery was completely flat. I have no idea why would it have gone flat as its only been stood two days, and its got a brand new battery in it (as in its just 5 days old). The alternator got soaked in oil when the burst occurred - could that flatten the battery??
It was so flat the central locking wouldn't even operate!
-
erm, why dd u fit a new battery - ???? seems a tad strange, cant see why an oil covered alternator would cause that :undecided:

Bought a new one because it wouldn't start last Monday - the battery had gone flat. Maybe theres a separate [coinicdental] electrical fault draining the battery. I assumed the battery had just died as it looks proper old, so chucked a new one in. It was fine all week, and then I broke down on Friday with the oil cooler fault.
-
could have been fine to start daily, but 2 days worth of a DRAIN could be too much mate.
Sounds like you got electrical gremlins too
Want picking up on Satdee

Probably got electrical issue then - f**k-a-doodle-do. The only thing I've done lately is repair the 5th injector connector and connect it back up (its never been connected ever since I bought the car - perhaps this is why!!).
Thanks for the lift offer - might very well take you up on it, unless I take a day off work this week and fix mine.
-
So then, ever regret selling that mk4?
If you need anything as a temporary measure to get the car running temporarily we have a KR block sat in the shed that can be pulled apart
-
lift offer is no issue, just let me know soonest as i shall have to detour off the M4 and add in 2.5 minutes accordingly
