Thought I would make its own thread, does a mod want to make this a sticky as several people have / had this problem now with the MK5.
If you are losing coolant and it constantly requires topping up this is because there a leaking flange (tell me you didn't giggle when you read that . . :D) where the coolant goes into the engine and all that (technical description there).
It is covered under warranty or (in the case of VW Croydon) cost £180 inc labour and parts.
HTH.

Alan, where exactly is your leaky flange? Was there a part number on the warranty invoice?
-
Here is a copy with the details on the invoice:

Thanks.
The first part on you list is a dinky connection pipe, near to the DSG heat exchanger, the second is a vacuum hose (for air) going to your brake servo (so it has fcuk all to do with the coolant!) . . . and none of those bits refer to anything remotely like a 'flange'!
You didn't have women on your mind - leaky flange  . . . . donning coat!
-
Weird.
Im just saying what I was told.

Fairy nuff.
But the text on the invoice does specifically state coolant flange replaced! Maybe Croydon VW are pulling a fast one on their warranty claims (not unheard of) - particularly when you look at their labour claim of one and a half hours. The bits they replaced should have taken less than half an hour!
Oh, and I just noticed - they shafted you for three litres of coolant! Now that is a blatant scam. The connection pipe can be changed without any loss of coolant (well, maybe a little dribble - similar to an old bloke with prostrate troubles ) - so HTF can they justify two bottles of neat coolant.
And I also noticed they didn't even use the latest spec coolant either! The current brew is "G12 plus plus". Hmmmmm, or did they. The part number is correct, but the actual description is wrong . . . . .
Good job it wasn't your own money!
-
Thanks for that little break down TT. You are spot on that Im glad it wasnt my money . . . .

I'm having the same thing fixed and the parts quoted are housing @£9.10 and a seal @£1.08 plus coolant as required.

See if you can take a picture - maybe get the dealer tech to point to the location on the engine - because there seems to be confusion between what is being told to peeps, and what is actually replaced.

ive been getting the same problem having to keep top up the coolant, its ben in to a dealer once and they said they couldnt find a problem!? so im taking it to anougher dealer to see what they can do maybe point them in this direction?

A wise move.
At the end of the day, cooling systems on modern cars are effectively 'sealed', so they shouldn't need any topping up.
However, just a note of caution, on some cars, some cooling systems will actually find their own level, and this may actually be below the minimum. By all means, top it up with the correct coolant additive mix to the max level, but then monitor it over a week or so. If it progressively drops a little each day, but then appears to stabilise at a certain level - then just leave it at that - even if it is below the minimum. If it completely empties the expansion bottle, then obviously further investigation is required.

well ive had to top up have ive had the red warnong light on the dash 3 times now so then went to dealer and they said they couldnt find a fault? was abit wierd altho since it went in about a week ago its been fine? im getting abit annoyed with it all now tho

Sounds identical to the problem I had. Kept on getting the low coolant warning. How long is there between filling it up and getting the low level warnings?
-
its every month or so maybe longer? ive only had the car since october and had to sort it out about 4-5 times!
-
Yep, sounds just the same as mine. My one was lasting a month or so, maybe a tad longer before running out. Print this page out and take it to the dealers along with a copy of that invoice I posted and see what he says . . . . ?

Just to update guys, my car was suffering this problem. My specialist could see staining on the side of the engine where the Flange(?) is. They ordered a plastic part which looked like the pipes were connected to but when they took it off it was perfectly fine and it was just a rubber O ring that had been flattened and as such was leaking tiny amounts of coolant. There was another O ring which he replaced while he was there but parts cost 91p each lol. Touch wood it has been perfect since. Seemed a real struggle to get to but the place is superb. Cost of fixing this fault and replacing the DV valve to revision G at VW - 300 pound, my specialist 151 pound all in

I have a look under my bonnet about once a week (well, it's just an excuse to handle all that luverly lightweight black shiny carbonfibre :smug:) and I noticed my coolant level had suddenly dropped about 3/4 of an inch one morning after a freezing cold night (unheated garage).
I phoned my friendly dealer and he said top it up with a bit of water to a 'mark' and check it every day and come back to him if it continued to lose.
It's happened once more but only during that very cold snow spell we had and without any dashboard warnings being activated.
While having the 60k miles cambelt kit change, they pressure tested the coolant line and found no leakage or problem but have replaced the coolant (£21.36 for 3 units).
I would post a pic of my coolant liquid but this is more interesting  : -

Are there any updates on this topic - have the people's levels sorted out?
Just something I'm keeping an eye on for when I get mine :)

Since having my flange and bits replaced by VW mine has been fine.
