Got my car remaped (fun :D) last week and now have a shiney Forge DV sitting in my boot. I need access to a car lift or ramps which I dont have and tbh I dont really know what Im doing with it so called my local VW specialist who phoned VW to ask how long it would take. He has said VW would charge 2 hours work, this place with therefore charge me 2 hours labour @ £45 an hour :(
Does it really take this long? I have been looking through the instructions and I cant see how it would take this long. Has anyone here fitted it themselves or how long did it take someone who knew what they where doing to fit?
-
I see your from Croydon.
Go to tuningwerkes on Hailing Road, South Croydon. They fitted mine, im sure they will be cheaper than a VW dealer??
they didnt charge me fitting, but then again I did order a load of stuff from them!

Shall give them a call tomorrow, thanks :). I wasn't taking it to a dealer, it was a VAG place is Sidcup.

on the ed30 its quite easy , it fits the same but on the gti its in a right b!tch of a place to get to
-
Yeah, seen it on a ED30, piece of piss. Fooking GTI  lol

Actually yeah I was gunna say... £45 per hour seemed cheap for a VW dealer!
Yeah speak to Rueben, he's really really helpful. And if his prices are too high, im sure he will tell you how to fit it. If you want to, mention that Chris with the vinyl'd white GTI recommended you to him.

Im sure I would be able to sus how to fit it, i just dont have a car lift or pit or any decent ramps I can get my car on :(
Just called them as they say they are open till 6 but no one home :(
-
No luck with Ben?
-
You don't really need ramps, you can do it from underneath. I've done several with just a trolly jack and an axle stand for safety backup.

Nah his ramps was too small / my car was too low :(

How did it take you to swap the old one for the new one?
-
Do you mean how long?
The physical part of changing the valve doesn't take long at all, maybe 10 mins. The tap off for the vacuum is a bit of a ball ache but that's from the top so easy access.
-
Sorry yeah, I meant how long. Doh.
So how did VW get 2 hours? Fecking hate dealers sometimes. Going to give these guys a call from Croydon in a sec when they open. I just want it to be fitted and working, this is the last thing I need to do to my car (apart from alloy refurb). Serviced, rempaed, cleaned, just need this poxy valve in now :(
Just got a text from Ben saying AMD will do it for 1 hours labour @ £60. If I go and your not doing anything on Saturday by all means come join us Tim, lots of nice toys there :D
-
VW probably don't know the job so will be quoting safely.
-
VW say 2 hours to swap the DV - the standard one is only a matter of undoing 3 bolts - not sure where they make up the rest of the time.
As for the Forge, like been said its easy enough but the bit under the car needs a little more due to feeding the new pipe to it and then a little work on top fitting the 3 way valve - not difficult though. You could even fit the valve before hand so its ready - just leave it blocked off.
You can then use another take off from the valve for a boost gauge

I want a boost gauge too lol . . . Ithink Im just going to take it to AMD and get them to stick a boost gauge in aswell. My wallet has taken the biggest beating of its life this month :(
Worth every penny though :D

-
Well, its a little complicated. They are planning on being closed over xmas but have had lots of phone calls from people wanting to do work so they might be open. Its provisionly booked in for this Saturday and he is going to phone me later to tell me if they are open or not,if not it will have to be when they open again after xmas.
-
Good bloke Ruben. Did my remap, big thumps up from me.

Good to hear! Glad I could help!!
I echo what Komenda says above - Rueben is a top guy, and always very helpful!

being a novice, what does a dump valve actually do other than make a noise? I've been told their not good for the engines at times.? :undecided:

Some people say they are no good, but I've always wondered why Forge would make them if they damaged the engine .

In the case of this topic, we are referring to the DV as simply replacing the standard valve, with a similar, stronger and more durable item from Forge.
Both do the same job, but whereas the standard valve has a plastic diaphram - that is prone to splitting under the increased temperature/load from remapped cars, the Forge item is metal, and therefore is much stronger and has been found to cope very well when a car is remapped!
Forge also do a DV valve that is 'atmospheric', which vents the excess air into the atmosphere, i.e. the type of valve that will produce more of a noise of a typical dump valve found on Scooby's, Skylines etc etc! There are arguments in existence that these valves are not as good for the TFSI engine as the re-circulating valve in question in this topic - i.e. the a valve that re-circulates the air and does not produce that 'blow-off' pttshhhhhhhh sound!
-
ok ta. helped a bit thanks! my engines just standard and aint sure if I change anything it would void warranty!.
Would like a whoosh from replacing my standard DV, but sounds like I would need a recirculating one then that doesn't give off much of a whoosh. (if thats correct?) :lipsrsealed: Again bit of a novice with turbo's!

recirculating means exactly that it re-circulates the air i.e. exactly what the OEM one does, there are various different opinions on the atmospheric/blow off/ dump valves i for one one would just opt for the standard replacement DV valve from Forge which recirculates. are you planning to have the car remapped?

great description there WhiteGTI :nerd:

No plans yet for remap (Got made redundant xmas eve!).
Was planing new exhaust/r32 style and remap when warranty runs out so no complications from stealers,- just under 2 years left.
But as I've gathered the standard Dv only needs replacing when this remap is done!?
Ta.

If you want the Whoosh noise then you don't need to replace the DV. Forge make a product which is simply a spacer that fits between the OEM DV and the turbo housing and when the the OEM DV operates it vents the pressure to atmosphere as opposed to recirculating it.
For a normal GTi then these two -

ok cheers matie.

Has any group actually tested to see if the atmospheric dump valve harms the engine in any way? I trust that Forge wouldn't make something harmful to the engine, but I'm still curious.

Its all just personal opinion but when I hear a Golf do a masssive 'WAAA TIIIISSSHHH' I cringe a bit as they just sound like a silly Scooby or Skyline.
Also Tunning Works and Ruden ARE closed over the xmas period so I wont be getting it put in till the new year :(

Understand about the loud whoossh, just a bit louder than my standard one but still discreet would be nice.

Forge do offer an adjustable one that lets you set how much is recirculated and how much is dumped. So it can set the volume of TSHHH you want

if its anything like the Forge Split-R that they do for the MKIV 1.8T engines then its a pile of poop and causes more running issues than the standard one

I've just read the sticky on the mk4 forums about the dump valve and the diverter valve and it makes much more sense to me now . While I can't be sure, but I think that the 2.0T FSI engine also measures both before and after so not using a diverter valve could cause problems. Great info in those posts .
