Thanks for the reply fredgroves and BillSan.

My issue is random, and not specific to start up / or start of journeys. I've tried to keep a mental note of when they occur to see if i could spot a pattern but there's none. I will certainly try moving the steering wheel, i have noticed i seem to get more when turning but equally i can be cruising straight on the motorway and it will ping!

Yup me too, try pushing and pulling at about 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions.

Mine got worse over time, guessing its some sort of connection wearing out or pulling loose.

It got so bad in the end that it was almost constant bonging as I drove along.

As I said, any and every VW dealer know all about it. Its not rare.

I only hope that the replacement wheel is an updated part and this isn't something that needs to be done every 2 years!!!

I’ve just been having a read on vwroc.com forum. A member on that forum has posted a screenshot of a post from what looks like a Facebook mk8 Golf owner’s group and a member of that Facebook group with a new mk8.5 Golf has just had a string of false error messages, along with the infotainment unit turning itself off.

Hopefully just an isolated case and not a continuation of underlying software issues that have been bugging the mk8 throughout its life.

The post in question is the fifth one down on the page at the link below;

Hi all
Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on were I stand on geting vw to replace a part(front light bar) that has finally failed after telling them a year ago that it had water in the lense, thay said it was fine at the time and was within tolerance, I'm out of the original warranty period and can't find any documents about extended warranty.

Any help is appreciated

Whether or not it’s covered under your extended warranty may depend on which warranty you’ve got. I’m assuming your extended warranty is a VW product in which case the chances are it’ll be either;
Or
  • if you’ve got VW’s stand alone extended warranty; the one where you choose to have either All Component or Named Component cover, the current and previous version(s) of the warranty booklet are at the following link - scroll down to the grey shaded section and select ‘Online Documents’;

Thanks for the info
Eventually managed to get to a dealer and it's booked in for October, said that even if I was out of warranty thay would have done it as I've previously reported it it just wasn't as bad

I had my steering wheel replaced last December and the bongs stopped, but just this last week I've started to get the usual failure of assistance systems on startup complete with a symphony of bongs, and the infotainment rebooted itself tonight.  Just as the weather is getting cooler again...

Hopefully the MK8.5 doesn't have these issues.

A recent large infotainment reboot that required me to turn the car off and restart it, was what gave me the final push to order an 8.5, as I am coming to the end of my warranty period, I felt it was best to jump ship now. I’ve actually been pretty fortunate with software problems on my mk8 being few and far between, I too really do hope the 8.5 is problem free. 🤞

I had a very similar scenario. A WV dealership from which i had bought probably 6 new GTI and GTD s just were not interested in fixing  the multiple bongs i was getting every day for about two years. I asked them initially to do a software update, the reply was your not down for  one. I asked them for a replacement engine cover. The reply was "you dont need one, it will run fine without"
Then i went to another dealer who i had dealt with years ago. Nothing too much trouble. A engine cover was ordered and fitted within a week, along with the latest software update. Two weeks later a new steering wheel fitted. Since then no bongs.

You need to try another dealer I must be honest if someone had said that to me especially the engine cover comment I would be kicking off in a big way!!

Who are the clowns  what dealer?
Mk6 GTI DSG
MK7.5 GTI performance DSG
Mk8 GTI
