Golf mk7 / Re: What have you done to your MK 7 today ?

Removed and cleaned under rear arch liners, before applying rustproofing spray.
Thankfully not a sign of any rust anywhere.
I now need to find the enthusiasm to do the same thing to the front arches!

Changed the clubsport numberplate surrounds to some minimal holders, and added the CS badge to the rear, I like it

Good to see your wheel centres are properly aligned Ceefeesh!

DrG, nice subtle Clubsport badging, it addresses the issue VW neglected.

BillSan, a nice positive start with the Goodyears then. Knowing Potenzas the rears will last another 30k 😁

You were right about the Potenza's Exonian.

An update on my tyres as the CS is in for an oil service today.

The new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6's which went on the front at the start of May are now worn to 5.3mm after about 7k miles.  The Potenza S005's that were on the front for 20k miles and moved to the rear in May are now worn to 4.2mm.

It certainly looks like Potenza's are the VFM option, although the F1 AS6's make less noise and suit the car better IMO.

An update on tyres as I've just ordered a pair of F1 Asymmetric 6's (£197 incl fitting) for my Clubby.

* My original Potenza S005's lasted 21,000 miles on the front and were then replaced by F1 A6's.
* The original rear S005's are still going strong (now at 3.5-4.0mm) on the rear and have now done 33,000 miles.  I think they'll get to c.43,000 before they're illegal at 1.6mm
* The F1 A6's I put on the front have now worn to 3.5-4.0mm and only managed 12,000 miles.   I'll now move them to the rear and they should be good for another 10,000 miles maximum.

In summary: Potenza's last quite a bit longer, but are noisier and feel less grippy than F1 A6's.

Continental sport contact 7's get good reviews but I haven't tried them and don't know how they wear.

Cosmetic and bodywork matters / Re: Surface rust treatment

I use a wire wheel on the grinder to remove the rust. I really rate Bilt Hamber products. Use their hydrate 80 (rust converter) after cleaning. Then electrox zinc followed by their epoxy.
The other product i use a lot and rate is Novol protect.

Golf mk3 / Speedo stopped working! Fuel gauge sporadic
« Last post by hardmonkeys on 02 June 2024, 12:40 »
Hello!!

My speedometer has stopped working, was driving along the other day, and after about 7miles, it just stopped and dropped, fuel gauge is jumping around too! Last time it did this, it was the speed sensor on the top of the gearbox, so replaced it, that was 7yrs ago, but off the road for 6 after that.

I have removed the sensor and attached it to a drill and ran it, the speedometer moved….so it’s not the sensor, the pinion is a new one, so could it be something inside the gearbox now?

Any other suggestions?
