Footwell Lighting
« on: 25 June 2020, 14:21 »
Anyone able to provide a link or two to some red LED footwell bulbs, I've ordered 2 sets of allegedly compatible one's off Amazon now only to find they don't fit and I don't particularly want to have to start hacking away at the hole to make them fit. I've seen other posts about doing this elsewhere on the forum but they seem to have different lights as mine are an all in unit it seems.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

I bought some off ebay that were a fixed unit and also found them to be a little too big. In the end I took a file to the apertures and they went in fine with very little material removed so although I agree it's not ideal, it is worth doing. The other option if you really don't want to do that is to buy a couple of oem VW bulb holders and a couple of red LED lights to fit. There's a guide on here with part numbers - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=275882.0

Another option which I haven't tried, is to carefully open the standard lights in the car and replace the circuit boards with new ones which you should find on ebay. Personally I would go with the first option, even enlarged the apertures will still take the original fittings assuming of course that you don't go too mad with the file!

Do you mean file the new light fitting as opposed to the plastic surround it fits into? If so that seems like a decent option, I'd prefer to leave the hole at its standard size....

No, file the plastic surround of the apertures. You really don't need to remove much at all, maybe just over 1mm. Otherwise you'll need to order the bulb holders and LEDs I linked to.
