mk4 headlights

I am thinking of chucking a set of mk4 headlights in my mk3, do the kits you get just fit straight in and plug into your original wiring system or do you need to mess about with them?

Cheers

U have a GTI, it has dual headlights... therefore it'll all plug in without any mods... get the Hella lights cos the INPRO ones dont give good peripheral light output... eg u cant see hedges going around corners etc

PS: If u have internally adjustable headlights then the Hella ones allow you to swap the motors from the old lights to the new ones... the INPRO ones, from what I hear, dont allow you to do this.

i got a set of ebay and they aint in pro . i aint sure what the make is but they are the exact same as hella ones but alot cheaper . the reason i know this is i bought what i thought was a set of hella ones from gsf when i was at a vw show at biggar a couple o weeks ago i got them back to the car and checked them as one was in a plain box the other in a hella . one had all the markings of hella and the other never but they were identical so i took them back anyway and got a set of ebay these were the same as what i had at biggar and i can still use my internal adjuster

I had a look around before:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=8277;start=10

Not seen InPro or any makes aside form Hella recommended, the InPro ones are the most readilly available, but don;t support adjustable beam height and apparently don;t have the greatest beam pattern.

Two main posts form that frevious thread:

Okay, I THINK I've found the correct lights on the Hella website now that they've updated their site...

1LJ 008 758-011  Headlight  Dipped/driving-beam head- lamp, left-side traffic
Properties:  left, for left-hand traffic, H7
Information:  H7 headlamp, left, with clear cover lens and pre-fitted 12V bulbs

1LJ 008 758-021  Headlight  Dipped/driving-beam head- lamp, left-side traffic
Properties:  right, for left-hand traffic, H7
Information:  H7 headlamp, right, with clear cover lens and pre-fitted 12V bulbs

Although quite worryingly I did find these two model numbers on the website before they updated it!

1DJ 008 187-011
1DJ 008 187-021

Described as: "Volkswagen Golf III Main Headlamp with Golf IV Look
The headlamp upgrade for the Golf III as of model year 09/91 uses state-of-the-art engineering to offer a visually and technically attractive alternative to the standard headlamps.
These headlamps with modern look have eliminated the patterned cover lens. They allow a free view of the high-gloss, vapour-coated, free-form reflectors. These reflectors alone provide for the optimum light distribution. The dipped and main beams both have the highest performance H7 halogen bulbs available today.
The small round parking lamp is positioned between the two reflectors where it can be seen easily.
Installation of the headlamps is easy. These headlamps from Hella are OEM quality and approved for general use."

The only prob with the above is they don't describe wether the ights are for a LHD or RHD car....

Any ideas? I'm trying to get some responses from the Hella staff technical staff at present...

And the reply...

Quote
The 1DJ part numbers are  LHD, right hand traffic.  The UK spec 1LJ versions would be the ones you require (VW Golf III in a IV look).  The difference is the internal make-up, such as direction of the reflectors within, there may be other differences.  They cannot be converted. As these are an upgrade they are suitable for vehicles with or without headlamp levellers.  There is a lead with an adapter which needs to be ordered seperately for vehicles >12/92. 8KA 146 152-001 - in stock RRP ?26 1LJ 008 758-011 and 1LJ 008 758-021 are in stock RRP ?128 each.

A good Hella distributor relatively close to you is Euro Car Parts in Wembley and they may even have these in stock - tel: 020 8956 5003

Do not get the lights form GSF: they do not sella Hella lights, despite having a Hella logo at the top of that section (of three lights) and having the photo of a Mk4 facelift STRAIGHT out of the Hella catalogue next to it, the GSF lights are apparently completely "unbranded".

White box, no logo's, no idea of performance, no thanks.

When I called their online sales, they said "yes, just had a look in the catalogue and they're definitely Hella".... specifically asked a few times to make sure they weren't rip-off's / InPro / FK /others and their reply was "yes, definitely Hella".

Then realised their Kingston branch is 5 mins around the corner, so I called them up. First off, I asked the guy the same questions and he said "looks like Hella, but need to order them across from another brach call me tomorrow and I'll check". Called him te next morning and he said "Sorry, completely unbranded".

If I'd ordered online I'd be stuck with unbranded lights that probably wouldn't support the adjustable beam height, would almost certainly have a bad beam pattern and knowing my luck would probably be LHD!

In summary:

1LJ 008 758-011 and 1LJ 008 758-021 are the RHD models RRP ?128 each all the newer Mk3's ones DON'T need the extra cable only the first year or so of production that do.

Demon Tweaks Direct will do them for ?127+VAT = ?298.45

There's a SMALL local retailer in Wimbledon SW18 that can get them in for ?125+VAT = ?293

ive got the in- pro lights its true the beams do seem to have a gender of their own(can not wait to see what the m o t man thinks).
but in its defence the beam is alot better than the old ones,so much clearer, the motor fits in them and works and are adjustable and are made of a good standard and maybe cheaper than the hella.

may help may not 8)
