lock will swap from driver to passenger side no bother, did it myself. However could be one side is gen VAG, other is not and thats why it doesnt work very well.
The way to tell if the lock will turn is to fit the key before you put the lock in the car, check to see if any of the lock pins are sticking out. If they are they'll stop the barrel from turning! If you get a load of spare pins swap em about till they all sit flush. If you dont have any spares or cant find one that fits, simply file the finger down till its flush!
