I would average 33mpg on a longer trip, but often struggle to hit 30/31 on the GTI.I get between 18-25 in the GTI.

Never driven a R32 so cant comment but I just wanted to point out that they are shocking mpg figures, I suspect something is not right with it.

I get 35+ on the motorway and on the journey to work threw the Blackwall tunnel (to show you how much traffice there is it takes me 1 hour to travel 15 miles) I get 28 - 30.

I agree... as per previous posts. There is definetly something not right with that mpg reading - unless you're stood stil for ages and ages with the engine on, and you do Grand Prix take offs at every opportunity

Thanks guys for your posts....hunting around for an R now...seeing what deals are around.  If I'm gonna change has to be the right spec etc and the most important thing, is that I get what I consider a fair price on trade in (we live in hope).

As for mpg....hmmm....I've never seen anymore than 34...and that was in a fast moving busy M6 when I was averaging 60-70.  If I do 80ish which tends to be my normal cruise speed, then I'm lucky to see 30?

Round town, if I'm honest....from pulling off my drive, to shops and back I'll get 24mpg max.  And thats without any grand prix starts (not saying I don't though when I feel like a smile).

In the old "combined" mode, i.e from leaving my house, to getting to motorway etc (my common route) I'll get 320 max to a tank?  Is that bad?  I've always thought it was low and my mate (vw tech) did say to speak to the dealers for them to do some tests but I've never bothered.

If I'm happy with them stats, then maybe I should go back to the V6 lump ;-)

You should be getting almost 40mpg doing 60-70mpg on the motorway and 35+ doing 80 - I take it that your GTI is not an Edition 30?

Yep...good old standard GTI....DSG with Cruise...but tend not to drive with cruise on most journeys (M62 is never that fair)

So then...guess I know who I'll be phoning tomorrow.

If we wanted S3's or  M3's we'd be in the relevant forums... we're here because we like VWs... Anyway, the S3 looks sh1t imho - no offence to S3 owners - and most people who drive BMWs in my experience are t055ers on the road.
