Can it be removed by hand?

It can be done, but it's hard to get enough purchase on it because of the location.  IIRC, it's a lot easier to undo from underneath.

I have mine changed at the local garage using magnatec 10-40 £25.00 is this ok for the gti turbo 

dont for the love of god put 10/40 in. i had it put in by a "reputable" company and almost destroyed the engine! 5/40 fully syn all the way  i also invested £16 quid in a magnetic sump plug from awesome gti
