Tried BP Ultimate - not impressed.
« on: 24 November 2008, 00:08 »
I always put V-Power in my std Gti, but was desperately low the other day I had to fill it with BP Ultimate.

I was disappointed with the results - it felt sluggish and the mpg on the long run back up north was way off what I get with the usual V-Power.

Anyone else noticed this difference?

When I tried Tesco 99 on the first day I got the car, the performance felt explosive, but that may just because I had only just picked it up and I had come from a normally aspirated E39 BMW 530i Sport.

BP ultimate is my last resort fuel. V-power and Tesco 99 are my car's staple diet. Tesco's seems to just edge it for me although I have heard of a few people having problems with it in the past and so I tend to feel more "comfortable" with V-Power.

I find it really weird how people notice a night and day difference with fuels. I put BP 102 in my car a few months back for a day at the drag strip, and to be honest, if there was any difference, it was absolutely minimal and certainly not noticeable.

Every car I have owned, I have never noticed any difference with different fuels, although I do run my car on V-Power all the time just as I did with the last one, but Sainsburys/Tescos fuel seems to be as good.

I never use BP Ultimate as it is way over priced and has lower RON than other fuels.

Did same thing tried all 'leading' brands.
Now almost exclusively use Tesco 99, esp since reading an article in Audi mag earlier in the year that compared many super UL petrol and found T99 the most stable.

Sainsbury's Super is 97 Ron Al, so that won't be as good as T99 which is what I always use. Use V Power if I get caught short, like the other day and i'm 99.9% possitive that the V power isn't as good, just not as responsive I feel. But it obviously isn't night and day different..
BP102 is always a strange one, as that can depend on how long it has been sat in the Fuel station's tank. Being it's used very rarely (and at £2.70 a litre it's not suprising), there's always the chance that it could be quite old when you use it which will mean it will of gone off and the ron rating will have dropped, thus bringing it down to the same level as your 99 ron fuels..

I have never tried Tesco 99 yet, maybe because I am sceptical (yer I know that is probably stupid), maybe because I have a fuel card so dont worry about the price too much or more likely because the nearest Tesco pump is at the opposite end of town and I have 2 shell stations very close to where I live and work :undecided:

iv only ever used BP Ultimate so I don't know any difference. there aren't any Tesco's near me so its only Sainsburys. The nearest Shell is in completely the wrong direction for most journeys! Shame as I would use that!

The main differences lie between the std unleaded & super fuels, but there are small differences between petrol stations i havent noticed too much myself but my friends swear by Vmax/ Tesco. ETTO is suppose.
