Have you tried the new battery trick mentioned and looked at your stereo stuff as I suggested - sounds silly I know but I had the very same problem!!

Fecking remote lives ... grrrr

Thanks people. The earth wire was rusty, looked fine but on closer inspection was very loose and dirty. All sorted now.
