Jacking the car up

Hey all.

Was just wondering if it's safe to jack the car up somewhere in the middle because I need to take two wheels of on the same side, to swap them round until I can get a new tyre.

Is it ok to do this? Or can I remove one, then jack the other side up and remove that wheel, replace with other wheel and then finish with the one I originally removed? LOL!

If your using a trolley jack i have done this before with no problems at all, but if your using she shi**y one which come with the car then no!
I really dont trust them!!

If you are removing both wheels from one side you can jack it up at the front jacking point high enough to raise the rear wheel as well as the front.
Remember to loosen both sets of wheel bolts before you jack it up and chock the wheels on the other side.

Would be a good idea to use a trolley jack and not the widow maker from the boot. It is safe to jack up from the box section about 200mm in from the sill jacking point.

Go very careful if you're using the sh!tty one, they have a tendancy to collapse and drop your car. Make sure you've never got any part of you under the car.
Halfords sell trolley jacks for under £20 and Lidls have got one in this week for about £12, well worth the investment.

Chock means place a bit of wood or similar behind the wheels (or in front if its likely to move forward) to stop the car moving when you jack the other side up. In case you're handbrake isn't up to the job. Also suggest leaving the car in first gear. The chock needs to be large enough so that the car won't roll over it, think about something house brick size.

Front sill jacking point is just back from the front door edge and should be marked with a triangle or similar on the face of the sill. Make sure the sh!tty jack locates properly into the lip on the sill.

The box section where you can use the trolley jack is in line with the sill jacking point and about 200mm in towards the centre of the car. You will see a reinforced section that sticks down about 40 or 50mm and is about 100mm wide. Use a bit of wood between the trolley jack and car to save you damaging the underseal.

If you do intend to use the sh!tty jack make sure it is as sturdy as possible before you take the wheels off, you might have to reposition it a few times before you think its safe to go ahead, better that than dropping your car onto its dics.

If you are using the one that came with the car DO NOT try and jack one whole side up with it, you will regrete it when it fails!

Take one off then replace it with the spare, then swap the 2 you want around taking the spare off last of all.

Pain in the arse but the only safe way to do it with what you have.

sh!t, yeah I forgot I had a spare :)

that's a much safer way to do it. I don't exactly have to tighten up the bolts do I?

Paul thanks for the write up. But just as I was gonna reply Drew mentioned the spare, it makes much more sense to do that way, I'd be gutted if the car fell on it's discs or my hands, jesus, I don't want to even imagine lol!

BIN THE VW JACK!!

If you like your car looking as it is leave it in the boot where it belongs, go invest in a trolley jack!

ONLY, I repeat ONLY jack on the chassis mounts, steer clear of your cills & the VW defined jacking points!!

If you are that broke that you can't afford a proper jack & axel stands I'd rather lend you mine than watch out for the "sh!t I collapsed my cills" thread after the weekend!!!  :undecided:

OK, your in Yeovil so forget borrowing mine! :rolleyes:

Get down your nearest motor factors & pick up some axel stands (£15) & a trolley jack (£20) & rob a piece of 2x4 from a skip! ;)

I've used the VW jack before though when I changed my wheels and it seemed fine? And yeah a bit of difference in distance lol!

I would go invest now but I actually can't afford too, I'm you're talking to a guy who can't change his tyre so has to swap them round for now lol!
