Who can work out my conundrum.....?
« on: 13 November 2008, 18:04 »

Right, as some of you may have read. My 8v GTi died a couple of weeks ago.... sob.

I have tried all sorts of things to get it going again:

- New Coil Pak
- New Dizzy cap
- Checked all leads for sparks etc.
- Changed fuel pump relay
- Checked the fuel lines were not blocked to the engine, all okay.
- All electrical connections appear to be okay.

I'm going to take all the plugs out just to see if they are damaged then after that I have no idea.  :undecided:

The battery is on charge now to make sure its full of life next time I try to start the beast.

Can anyone think of another reason why it wouldn't start, it turns over fine but doesn't seem to want to kick into life, every now and again the exhaust pops whilst trying to start.

The only other thing I can think of is that the whole distributer may need changing?

Thanks for any ideas I can try, in the mean time I will have to carry on driving the Land Rover around and crying everytime I go near a petrol station!

Check the hall sensor, (crankshaft position sensor) sits on top of the dissy three wires on a plug, might have some moisture in the plug or a broken wire or the sender could be shafted. Can you not get it on vagcom and read the codes?

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

the majority of the time yes.. But not always.

If it still doesnt start when you bump it then thats my idea out the window.. sorry chap!

But the timing belt is on the left of the engine, just under the air filter feed etc.. Will have a black plastic cover over it, just clip that off and you will see if the belt is ok or not

Ah do you mean timing belt AKA 'cam belt'?

If so then already checked that and all is okay!

Sorry for an obvious suggestion, but it does have fuel in it?

Have you made sure fuel is getting to the engine?
