Whine with revs (not gearbox)
« on: 10 November 2008, 15:56 »
Gday,

After searching the forum, I can't find the answer to my problem...

My 8v GTi has a whine that goes up (in pitch) with the revs. I thought to begin with it was the gearbox, but it does it when revving the car whilst out of gear or clutch depressed.

There is a jolt through the drivetrain when coming on and off the power, leading me to think it might be a clutch release bearing?? (That may be rubbish though...)

Anyone shed any light/suggestions on what it might be? Water pump or alternator belt? I am still a bit of a novice when it comes to diagnosing these things, so any helpful suggestions appreciated.

Cheers...

I have a wine that gets worse the more i rev the car.

It usually sits in the passenger seat  :lipsrsealed:

i believe I've got this problem.. don't think it's wheel bearings because it whines when the car's stationary/handbreak on yeah?

i changed by power steering pump because I was 90% sure it was that and it was on it's way out anyway and it wasn't it  im putting a new drive belt tensioner on soon as mines knackered, but i think it's the alternator or tensioner tbh, more likely alternator

Yeah stationary, not in gear, gave the altenator a good squirt of wd40, which made no difference. Thinking it i prob one of the pulleys as thats where it comes from.

I had my garage see if they could suss out which 1 it was and they weren't able to figure it out  biggest bet it was the PAS pump, got it changed and it wasn't.

Now think it's either the tensioner, which is well and truly knackered, or the alternator. Think I'll try the tensioner first
