Frankly I'd bop a new belt on there, time it up and see how it runs. £20 and half a day will be worth it to if it's still a goer.

Nick

worth a go,i had a mate who bought a car with a snapped cambelt for about £50,put a new belt on it and it ran perfectly, then he sold it for about £1000.

CHeck the linkage for the box. Will it go in reverse or can you not find it on the stick?

Change the belt as Nick said, then do a compression test.
If the box is knackered, then buy a 2nd hand one off ebay.

Dunno if it's the same place you're thinking Bow, but I've used Stevens Volkswagen Dismantlers and they've usually been pretty helpful.

I've had this problem before, in my case two valves were bent so bought a replacement head from Stevens VW (Yes a good source of goodies and cheap postage too) gasket set / water pump (worth doing) and all was fine and dandy.

Spend about £100 and it should be a happy motor again - dead easy to do too.
