big bore noise from exhaust

took my car into the local garage the other day as i thought my exhaust was blowing and needed replacing or repairing as it got louder as i acclerated only for them to turn round and say this is typical vw golf sound. the mrs took it out today and i could identify the noise as she come up the street. it sounds different to everyone elses car? this maybe because i have a decent car, a vw golf i dont know but sounds very throaty and has slight big bore noise coming from the rear ata guess?

What engine do you have 1.8T 2.0 derv?

Have u got a 1.8T? If so, that exhaust is either leaking or you've got some part of aftermarket exhaust on - Maybe a de-cat??  Hard to say w/o hearing it, TBH.

Ive driven a polo with same engine and that made a quite a loud noise as the revs built up- that ony had 20,000 miles on it.

If the garage says its ok then dont worry about it

I've been pottering around in a 1.4 16v today, & must say it's fairly quiet - quite refined, in fact.   So I dare say, urs may have a problem if ur neighbours can hear u 2 streets away, LOL.
